I believe RA3 is the newest, but they came out with an expansion pack that can be played stand-alone that also has some balancing changes called RA3 Uprising
This is the version I've been playing since I kind of assume that the expansion is "better" than the vanilla game in respect to balancing. RA3 Uprising is also on Steam
I know there are also a few official compilations of the early games such as The First Decade which I believe installs as the original games did in terms of the install process, however it does NOT include the newer games-CNC3 and RA3 that I mentioned. On the other hand The Ultimate Collection is a digital download that uses the Origin client which can understandably be a turn-off, especially since people have had issues playing the older games on newer operating systems, but is the most complete collection of Command & Conquer games to date.
Personally, if you can wait for another steam sale I would recommend doing so because you can probably get RA3 and CNC3 and their respective expansion packs (Uprising for RA3/Kanes Wrath for CNC3)
much cheaper, since RA3 was only 5.99$ USD on sale compared to 19.99$ USD normally.
If you prefer to get only one game now and the others on sale, I would recommend them based on which play style you enjoy. Command & Conquer 3:Tiberium Wars controls similar to C&C:Generals in the sense that you place buildings from a unit that builds them, compared to the click and drop style of the Red Alert Games, however, in Red Alert 3, the 3 different Factions each have a unique style meaning that one faction "Empire of the rising Sun" for example, constructs buildings by means of a vehicle that unpacks into said building. The "Allied Nations" construct buildings by means of clicking the building, then selecting where to build, then having the timer go down as its built on-site. The final faction "The Soviet Union" constructs buildings by selecting a building, having the build timer complete, then selecting where to place the "finished" building
TL;DR If you enjoy the play style of Red Alert and Red Alert 2, get Red Alert 3. If you enjoy the play style of Generals, get CNC 3:Tiberium Wars.
Masters of Doom. Fantastic book. I grew up around the time it was all happening, but never knew what was going on, just that these amazing games were being released by this tiny company. The two Johns and Chris Roberts (who created Wing Commander) made me want to be a game designer. Or rather, I had wanted to be one from the age of 4, but they showed me that it was possible for one person to come up with something amazing. I've read this book about once a year for the nostalgia.
I also recommend reading Jordan Mechner's journals on the making of Prince of Persia. The guy kept tons of records of everything about making the game. It's pretty amazing to read. His journals are available on Amazon as well.
I've used Astros a lot and they are really nice but they arnt sturdy at all. I ended up having to buy a new one every year. The headset i would recommend would be a standard wireless PS3 headset. I got mine about 2-3 years ago and its still strong today. Its about average on price and sound but the microphone might be subpar. But holy crap these things were built to last. I've dropped it numerous times and it still works great. It's going two years strong and i dont think I'll need a new one any time soon. Looks like its on sale on amazon too.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0053OLY9O/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
EDIT: forgot to mention it works for PS3 PS4 and PC. I'm not 100% sure if it works for Xbox but i wouldn't bet on it. And being a long time multiplayer gamer. All i look for now is a sturdy headset and so far this is the strongest one I've come across yet.
Don't do it. Get these Sennheisers instead. Better build quality and sound and better mic. Probably not worth $300, but I'd get em for $140. Or look at the Hyper X Cloud for $80 or Hyper X Cloud II's for a little more.. Linus Tech Tips gave really good reviews on them.
Edit: If you ask anyone serious about audio they'll tell you to get nice headphones and a separate mic. I got some Sennheiser 558's for about $100 and a Zalman clip-on mic for ~$8. It's a little more of a hassle dealing with 2 cords, but the sound quality and comfort is awesome. Couldn't be happier.
Edit 2: or just get the A40's. I don't know a whole lot about them, but have read that Sennheisers are superior for sound quality.
Well my primary multiplayer game is Warhawk and that game pretty much requires teamwork to win. I'm sure if you play Call of Duty or Battlefield those games are pretty much designed around solo play. WH actually came with a mic which was pretty decent quality. I have the official Sony headset as well and that one is really good quality, though it hurts my ears a bit after a few hours. This official PS3 headset I heard is pretty damn comfortable though. Just expensive compared to my other ones.
I actually use an N64 on my PC for games like Persona 4 (emulated) and Street Fighter IV. USB-N64 adapters can be found for around $20. This Amazon listing appears to be the same converter I have, and you can find it listed on eBay by searching for "N64 USB" (sans quotes).
Warning: The vast, vast majority of N64-USB converters out there (mine included) tend to be rather hit and miss. I wouldn't call them "garbage," because when they do work, they work beautifully. The problem is, they only work with a small percentage of controllers. This isn't a problem with the adapter, but rather, it's due to the way that Nintendo manufactures the controllers. The converter that I use (linked above) only works with one of the five N64 controllers I have tried it with.
The exception to "n64-usb converters only work with a small fraction of controllers," I have been told, is the adaptoid. (You can find it by searching "adaptoid" on Google or eBay search or whatever.) This converter supposedly has 100% compatibility. However, it is out of production, very rare, and very expensive. When they pop up on eBay they usually go for $80+
In short, I would advise against trying to get a bunch of N64 adapters for you and your friends. If you're lucky, you might get one of your controllers to work with an adapter, but don't count on it.
If your friends have Xbox 360 controllers or PS3 controllers, those can be used. If you have a bluetooth adapter for your PC, Wii controllers can also be used. Xbox controllers can also be easily modded to work with PC. (The connection they use is actually USB, it just uses a proprietary plug.) If you have any of these controllers lying around already, I'd recommend using them just because you can, but I wouldn't recommend going out and buying them because they're more expensive than what you'd get from Logitech.
Word of advice about N64 controllers, if you find yourself using them (either with the actual console or because you got a working adapater): the joystick tends to become loose and worn out on the inside from age. If you ever see powder or a pasty build-up around the joystick's seat, that dust is plastic that is being ground up inside the controller. The best thing you can do for an old N64 controller is to replace the joystick. I bought new joysticks on eBay, $6 for a set of two, and installing them makes old controllers feel like new.
Something like this: http://smile.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW?sa-no-redirect=1
I am more interested in using it for cleaning my computer, but if it is "safe" to use on some of my knick-knacks, I am all for it! Plus it will save me money long run.
Edit: I found an ESD safe one that is probably even better for my precious: http://www.poscleaning.com/BRAND-NEW-ED-500-ESD-DataVac-ESD-Safe-120VAC-Electric-Duster-ED-500-ESD.htm
He already answered, but I did want to say that I don't have that particular controller. I do however have a N64 version which feels just like the original did. I got the black one, and obviously there's no Nintendo branding, but it's all there, even the rumble pack slot. The joystick feels right (but smaller... probably the result of a decade of me getting older and not their product), and it works without any special additions beyond Windows7 and my emulator (Project64).
I would have to hold an original next to it to be sure, but the plastic feels smoother than I remember... I don't know if that's a different type, or if my memory is just off... but what matters is that games feel right on it.
I also have a Logitech controller that has a layout just like Playstation's controller which works well. I use it for my SNES games as well. If you want the 'exact' same thing as back when you played SNES, you'd want an SNES controller... but if you are willing to budge on it, I'd recommend the F310 as a general use controller for NES, SNES, Playstation, and other similar layouts. Hell even other PC games if you're really into that.
The key is that if you have an SNES controller, you won't have enough buttons to do emulation for playstation games. So you'd need a PS controller as well.
(edit, added detail+links)
I LOVE my hyper x clouds. They are amazing build quality the best I have ever seen in gaming headphones that usally feel like they are made out of super cheap plastic. The sound quality is decent to good 7.1 surround sound. I have heard that the microphone isn't great but I've never heard complaints about mine. Plus they have the greatest review ever!

HyperX Cloud II Gaming Headset for PC & PS4 - Red
(KHX-HSCP-RD) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SAYCXWG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_IuB7xbQFH3WYS
Here is a build you can start working with to fit your needs. It is £40 over budget but some bargain shopping and/or used parts can close that gap. I put in a cheap keyboard and mouse as a place holder, those are some items that can be replaced with expensive counterparts later as you see fit, but they will do the job now. I put windows 8.1 because it can still upgraded to 10 for now, but there are always cheaper ways to get windows, but be careful and do your research. You can replace the case with whatever as long as it is compatible which pcpartpicker will tell you. You can probably find different speakers for cheaper but I would recommend buying headphones if most of your audio will be for gaming. For headphones I would recommend the hyperx Cloud II, but that is something that can wait. Once again the graphics card is more or less a place holder. That is something that you will have to shop around for as your currency changes, but I would look towards amd's new rx470 or rx480 that come out tomorrow. With their arrival used graphics cards will also go down in price so keep an eye on ebay or /r/hardwareswap, they have a UK section. Learning to build a computer is pretty simple, just watch some youtube videos and you will have it down.
Well for what it's worth, most of the "classic" C&C games have been released as freeware. This includes the original C&C, C&C2, and Red Alert. However, if you really want Generals and Red Alert 2, your best bet is The First Decade which has everything pre-C&C3 on one tidy disc. :)
I personally would recommend the F310, if near the PC but the cord is not very long, so more likely the F710, or the 360 controller. I like the XB1 controller but it's battery life is simply unacceptable, and I don't use it enough that I'm willing to consider the sync problems acceptable when I do.
UPDATE: SUCCESS!! PRICE IS NOW $34.99 AT AMAZON! Thanks everyone! Amazon's Preorder Price Guarantee says our orders should be updated to reflect the cheaper price automatically within 24 hours.
__
Best Buy just dropped their Portal 2 PC/Mac price to $34.99.
PS3 is $44.99 and Xbox 360 is $44.99 also.
Amazon loves to have the lowest prices, so visit Amazon's Portal 2 page and click Tell us about a lower price and there's a good chance we'll all save $10 more!
(Amazon says "Found a lower price? Let us know. Although we can't match every price reported, we'll use your feedback to ensure that our prices remain competitive.")
It's actually one of those cheap N64 replacement sticks you can find all over Ebay and Amazon.
Emphasis on "cheap". They look and feel nice, but the pots conversion is total trash and you get some hefty input lag.
But programming your own chip is a great alternative that will work perfectly. Gonna cost you quite a bit more than 10 cents though, that's for sure.
Theirs was an amazing story, like the dream of every teenager's wish of being a game developer. Then the subsequent nightmare and reality of that success.
I can highly recommend these. They are wireless and work great with PS3 and PC. They are super comfortable and I can wear them all night long even with my eyeglasses on.
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Stereo-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B0053OLY9O/ref=cm_rdp_product_img
I am not sure what you mean by:
>PC Audio + Ps3 Audio at the same time
I don't think any headphones can receive two different inputs at the same time?
They always do their best to replace my broken items. Logitech is the only company I trust. Not to mention their products last a LONG time, high quality and durability.
All my peripherals are Logitech now. The only problem I ever had with their product was the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick. Fuck that joystick, FUCK IT! I had to replace FIVE of them in less than a year span. It was still awesome, but they broke every two months. While they worked it was the best joystick ever. Thankfully Logitech support understood it was crap and replaced them all free.
From the PS4 I think he wanted one of the newer Kingdom Hearts games. This or this. Also you just look up Arduino or rasperry pi kits and there's usually some game kind of deal.
Also here's some PS4 stuff. 1 or 2. If you do two check the sellers for best ratings and stuff. But 1 seems the way to go because of the game. Also if you do just end up getting him a PS4 no game get the kid kingdom hearts remaster (not the 2.8).
But if you go aruino go with this and this and this. Those three are cheaper than the PS4 and he'll learn more.
Also all this is from the perspective of a guy who's had to buy his own games and stuff.
This is an awesome thing, I bought one for an n64 controller so i could play the games on an emulator without having to re-figure controls on a dual shock. Its super awesome and easy to switch out.
>I'd have thought a decent gaming machine would cost vastly more than a console and I'd have to buy a
Not true. This guy's proves it = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZR-a35sxLg
>I'd have to buy a desk and shit to shove the monitor and keyboard and all that bollocks on
Well, if you want to sit on your couch and just skip using a keyboard you can do that...
Also how fucking big do you think a PC has to be? Like.. Seriously how big? Because you are so full off yourself. Also, you still need to buy a controller for your console (I know one comes with) but you can literally buy a keyboard and mouse for 5$
Last time I checked you still need to buy a TV to use it for your console. So why are you telling me that a PC needs a monitor but a console doesnt need a TV?
Here let's do some comparisons.
400$ PS4. http://www.gamestop.com/ps4/consoles/playstation-4-system/109942
14.99$ TV unit (I took the absolute cheapest one...) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50243299/
Sofa or sitting on the floor? Alright here you go. A chair 29.99$ (still, cheapest one I could find) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10289128/
You want some games? Hm, let's take some games that are new and are on both PC and PS4. Let's say 4 games.
Dying Light 59.99$ http://www.gamestop.com/ps4/games/dying-light/111372
GTA 5 59.99$ http://www.gamestop.com/ps4/games/grand-theft-auto-v/115462
Evolve 59.99$ http://www.gamestop.com/ps4/games/evolve/113546
Far Cry 4 59.99$ http://www.gamestop.com/ps4/games/far-cry-4/115109
Do you want to play with a buddy? Another controller. 53.33$
http://www.amazon.com/DualShock-Wireless-Controller-PlayStation-Black-4/dp/B00BGA9X9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420739574&sr=8-1&keywords=playstation+4+controller
And lastly. A TV that is in 1080p 156.59$ (the cheapest one I could find that was NEW. NO Used ones or refurbished!) http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00EAY1FGA/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
Total price 894.86$
Also, do you want to play online? 1 month is 9.99$, 3months is 17.99$ and 12months is 49.99$
Now, let's do our 350$ PC. So PC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZR-a35sxLg
Do you want to use it on a TV unit or on a desk? You choose. (you could technically do this on the console too but a desk is more expensive.) Let's go with desk for your convinience so 79.99$
Same here, couch or a chair? I'll go with a chair 19.99$ http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S79046260/
And now on games.
So, since Dying Light hasnt released the price for the american price I'll pick the european price and change it to the american currency (This will make it more expensive than usually) EU price: 49.99€ converted to dollars 59.07$ http://store.steampowered.com/app/239140/
Since steam has not given out a price of GTA V on steam I'll pick it from G2play.net (it will most likely be sold for 49.99$) but here you go. 55.64$ http://www.g2play.net/category/3077/grand-theft-auto-v-steam-key/
LoL, I am actually kind of happy right now, it's not that usual that europeans get the game cheaper than americans do but we do on Evolve, anyway. Here you go 59.99$ http://store.steampowered.com/app/273350/
Far Cry 4 59.99$ http://store.steampowered.com/app/273350/
Do you want to play with a friend? A controller. I couldnt be bothered looking for a cheaper one. Here you go 9.99$ http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Twelve-Button-Game-Controller-USB-GAMEPAD/dp/B00AEWTSWU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1420741023&sr=8-5&keywords=pc+controller
And lastly, A TV/Monitor 156.59$ http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00EAY1FGA/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
Total: 851,25$
Now, yes. It is very close but my argument will always stand, it will be cheaper on steam. With steam sales, humble bundles (https://www.humblebundle.com/ seriously it's 4 games for 1$... Altho I never pay below average because I am not a scumbag, but still) and websites like G2play.net you will ALWAYS find games that are cheaper, for an example here you go with Far Cry 4 for 34.64$ http://www.g2play.net/category/11641/far-cry-4-uplay-key/
I use the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro for flying in Arma 3:
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-963290-0403-Extreme-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U
I wouldn't say I put it through a really heavy gauntlet of use, but it is holding up well, has a ton of function buttons, and feels comfortable and effective. I'd recommend it for all of that plus the fairly low price.
small disclaimer here, i am a bit of an audio snob so mostly have more expensive gear because i like overpaying for things apparently lol
So, at that price point im really not that sure what is "best" as i dont have a ton of personal experience there other than some audio technica m40x, which are on sale for $80 with no mic on amazon right now. at $80 they are great, but with no mic you would need to spend a bit more.
http://smile.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_cc_1
if you could up your budget just a bit you could add a v moda boom mic that would work with the m40x. it is $30.
http://smile.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Microphone-Gaming-Communication/dp/B00BJ17WKK/ref=sr_1_4
any non-usb mic would work too, but the v moda attaches to the headset to keep things nice and tidy. so something like either of these 2 should do the trick and both are under $10. you just have to figure out how to get the mic in place since it isnt designed to attach to a headset straight out the box. the one is a lapel mic so just attach it to your shirt, and the second could possibly be broken down and you could try attaching it to the headset on your own somehow.
http://smile.amazon.com/Microphone-Smartphone-Blusmart-Omnidirectional-Condenser/dp/B01H19E0JE/ref=sr_1_39
http://smile.amazon.com/Connectland-Tabletop-Microphone-Recording-CL-ME-606/dp/B0028Y4DCC/ref=sr_1_7
Or you could try these Hyperx Cloud II's out. i have never tried these, but they are in your price range and they are sort of a chinese knockoff version of the more expensive mmx300s i have. they have a lot of really good reviews though so might be worth a try. even though they arent from an actual headphone manufacturer they apparently are very good for the price point, so could be just right for you.
http://smile.amazon.com/HyperX-Gaming-Headset-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B00SAYCXWG/ref=sr_1_1
you could also pop over to /r/headphones to look for some advice. there are people there with a lot more experience with products across a wider price range so could be somebody who already owns a headphone/mic combo that fits that budget.
May I recommend this beast of an air blower? It's 3/4ths as powerful as a horse. And like a horse it should only be used outside. My dad's favorite gift I've probably ever given him.
To this day the X-Wing series are some of my all time favorite games. You may be interested to know that the series is for sale at Good Old Games and works on modern PCs.
https://www.gog.com/game/star_wars_xwing_special_edition
Having purchased them when they came out, I have to say... the graphics are as bad as you think, but the gameplay is still as sweet as you remember.
Edit: And if you can't find your old joystick, they're still sold on Amazon... I have this one. Edit2: lol, out of stock. >< Here's some others.
http://www.amazon.com/Retrolink-Nintendo-64-Classic-Enabled-Controller/dp/B008L3UUPS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453754747&sr=8-1&keywords=n64+usb
13 Dollars on amazon, $10 if you buy third party. Hope i could help, friend

Very interesting book detailing this and their early days. Its a bit dated (was released in 2003), but a great read for those interested in gaming, none the less.
You can order just the joysticks here. It's super easy to install. Just take apart the controller, unplug bad joystick, plug in good joystick, and put it back together. I've done this a couple times for myself or friends.
To be honest my bro gave me his wireless sony head set and i think it personally sounds amazing and is actually quite comfortable. and it works on the PC too.

Civ5 is a very excellent game.
I'd say that Civ 5 + Brave New World pushes it to the best of the series, however the base game alone is largely flawed in comparison to 4, but still good.
However... iTunes is a rip off. Steam has the game for sale at $30, but regularlly puts it on sale for $5-$10 http://store.steampowered.com/app/8930/
Amazon also frequently sells it for cheap, though if you're on Mac, be careful to search for the correct version:
http://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-V-Download/dp/B004774IPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383086071&sr=8-1&keywords=civ+5
I've reconditioned half a dozen n64 controllers with these. They're amazing, way better than original, and aren't using fucking optical sensors and wheels like the original. What a batshit crazy design.
Get an adapter like this.
I have a Mayflash Super Joy Box 13 that adapts GameCube to USB. All the buttons and levers work (even the analog shoulder buttons), and it only cost me $5 on eBay. I used to use that to play N64 ROMs... an old classmate burned me his ROM collection. N64 took 6 CDs.
The Kingston HyperX Cloud is a great headset and works on pretty much every platform. Here's a link to them if you're interested. Note that if you ever get an Xbox One you will need an adapter in order to use this headset with it.
Meh. Thanks for lecturing me on id software history. You are right. Congratulations.
Here is your prize: Masters of Doom
I have this and I really like it, surround sound, wireless, great microphone, and good battery life.

Some people balk at the fact that I purchased Astro A40s... I love 'em and don't regret the purchase one bit but in your price range I'd say go with the new Sony Wireless [here]. I've heard great things about those.
[EDIT] That is IF you are on PS3... I didn't even think about that... Sorry, though I was in r/ps3.
http://www.amazon.com/Halo-2-Pc/dp/B000NV8F58 Not the same but if you have a decent computer it's a ton of fun :D has xbox 360 controller support.
The hyper x cloud 2 has good reviews
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SAYCXWG/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482186159&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=cloud+x&dpPl=1&dpID=41Z3t92Hu6L&ref=plSrch
What's your price range?
There is the older model too for like 50
It's good for all systems and pc
I do like the design of the G433 especially the red
For around the same price as the G433 what do you think would be better?
G433
Cloud II
(Probably should’ve mentioned in post but I’ll be playing mainly FPS /Rainbow 6/Battlefield etc. so I’m more so looking for a headset that can pickup in footsteps easily while still being reliable in the long run)
Bought this electric duster 4 years ago for $30. Still running strong and one of the best investments for my PC yet.
Really depends on how many bells and whistles you want. The one I have set me back about 35 bucks when I bought it, but isn't supported on all that much. Even on the games I do play that support it, I find a mouse more precise. Still, as you can see on Amazon and elsewhere, they can range anywhere from around $12 USD to $200+.
I don't know if you'd be interested but you can get a USB adapter that lets you connect a Nintendo 64 controller to your PC. They're not the best thing in the world but they're really cheap and they work well (I have one). I would sell you my Nintendo 64 with Ocarina of Time but I just can't part with it!
Have fun!
You should get these little velcro cable ties. I recently started using them because the back of my computer desk was littered with 6 ft cables that I only needed 2 ft of. I folded up all the extra slack in my cables like this and used the velcro to ensure that they don't come undone. It's trivial to do, and it will clean up that clutter nicely.
I highly recommend Masters of Doom to anyone interested in learning more about the history of Doom, id, Ion Storm, and everything that went on between Romero and Carmack. Great read.
You're welcome
If you dig, you can find cheaper ones. They are also super easy to replace.
Here is a link for just Civ V, on sale on Amazon right now, if you don't want the whole strategy pack, though the pack is only 5 bucks more.
It is completely worth it. It's amazing as always.
If you enjoyed this I highly recommend you read Masters of Doom, which goes into more detail of the rise and fall of ID software and is an extremely entertaining read for any gamer.
Amazon has Velcro ties that are very useful for cable management and are like 5 bucks. cable ties
Just replaced my first one this past weekend and ordered 3 more from here. Thanks for the help!
Don't wind your cables like that !! D:

Your controllers will look better, last last longer
This. I've had good luck with these.
Unlike a Windows based PC, the Xbox One really has no "plug and play" capabilities. (Even with their own hardware.) Sure a lot of Plug and play devices work, but just not the ones made by Micro$oft.
Resync should help. If not try unplugging the dongle from your PC so it is not sending/receiving any signals to the controller.
I have been told this set from Amazon is good. It also sells other places but was easy to find on there. ( But I think that is more than what you want...
I believe the X Box One controller is plug and play on Windows machines from 7 and up.
Here's a link to the adapter on Amazon. Wal-Mart carries them too still. So you can play with a wireless controller with a cable for now, then get the adapter later when the budget allows
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511150881&sr=8-1&keywords=xbox+one+wireless+dongle&dpID=219kQ7JAPhL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
if you want good audio I've been using this for about two years or so with no complaints, if you're buying a headset for the microphone then I've heard good things about the MSI 502 headset and the HyperX Cloud 2 and if you want the headphones I use, the Antlion Modmic 5 should work fine
The best budget joystick is only $26.
The game plays amazingly well with KB+M in the modes designed for it but the joystick opens up access to Simulator Battles which are probably what you're looking for. I've played a lot more on the tank side of the game (currently in closed beta) so I can't offer an expert opinion but I can definitively say that the way they model damage is very well done. Flight models vary from great simulation to completely broken though but that's an ongoing goal of development since the game isn't a full release yet.
Do yourself a favor and get this. It will make that gamepad even better than new, and it takes about 5 minutes to install.
Try Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Portal-2-Pc/dp/B002I0JIQW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1303095795&sr=8-3
No $10 gift card, but a $20 gift card if you go with the PS3 version (comes with PC cd key) and it's $54
Elite: Dangerous remains my favorite VR experiences. (It is plenty fun in non-VR as well.) Make sure to pick up a flight stick. This one is what I fly with, and it is only $30.
That is why i said at the time most of what i listed, accept for max payne and burnout were mainly xbox releases with a windows release usually following shortly after.
And not to be a stickler, but technically not even halo 2 is an exclusive
microsoft was smart and ported most of their big sellers so they would have a way to keep making money rather than forcing an emulation project.
Consider something like this instead. It seems expensive, but canned air can't even begin to compare - this thing will clean dust out of places you didn't know existed.
This is true. I didn't think of it like this. Well, what do you think. Should I buy it from Amazon or should I wait until the Steam Sale
You should read "Masters of Doom" on how John Romero and John Carmack came up with that game. One of the best books I've read.
I use these for my wires, they are simple velcro straps. I love them, I'll send you a picture on how they look on my wall:

there are also usb styled controllers for nes, snes, gamecube, genesis, and on down the line for pretty much anything you need.
Not to mention the computer i use for emulation is an e-350 apu based 200$ system with a salvaged hard drive and it can play episode 1 racer 1080p at around 40-50fps.
Read this book. Really well written, it's one of my favorites.

You don't need DS4 for an Xbox controller. Just buy the PC version of a xbox 1 controller.

I prefer PC over console. I have a ps4 but usually used for crunchyroll and the occasional Resident Evil binge. Tailored towards more single player games like Uncharted but Pc has a lot better games like Rust, Overwatch (better on PC than consoles), and many PC games get patches first compared to consoles. For example Overwatch and Diablo 3.
N64 controller to USB FTW! :)
Amazon has these for $80 with free and Prime shipping. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00L3LQ1FI/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1422632909&sr=8-1&dpPl=1&dpID=31IjKqU-7TL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SX200_QL40
PS4 Slim/Uncharted 4 Bundle is currently on same at Amazon for $250 if you're interested now. It's only $300 normally, so you're not missing out on that much if you want to wait to see if the remasters are good/not actually platform exclusive.
It's not nearly as bad as it looks. Most of that dust is on parts that dissipate heat more than adequately without any airflow.
There are two real sources of noise to worry about on a PS3: The back fan may have just worn out, or the optical drive has an unbalanced disc in it. If the disc is fine, the drive is probably going out. There shouldn't be any other moving parts in those things.
Since you have it open though, may as well hit that thing with a swiffer for the clumps and then some compressed air (one of these if you're feeling like getting a new power tool) out on the porch for the rest.
In my experience, this nifty little tool is a great substitute for compressed air cans:

Portable screen solution for the Xbox360
XBox 360 VGA Adapter
I would recommend the latter if you have a desktop computer already and an open VGA port - one screen, two functions. Get that with the aforementioned monitor, use the DVI for PC and VGA for Xbox.
Well since it's USB you could always just get USB controllers for each one. I have the SNES and NES ones. There are also N64, Sega Genesis, and even Atari 2600 controllers. Just go on amazon and type in (console) usb controller and you'll probably find it.
Replace it with this and you'll never have a crappy control stick. Cheap and useful.
You would probably love this book.
http://www.amazon.com/Masters-Doom-Created-Transformed-Culture/dp/0812972155
It's mostly about DOOM but it talks a lot about Commander Keen.
nice setup!
pick up some velcro strips for cable management, they're really low cost and can improve the look and feel of your gear.
I got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Playing TIE-fighter all over again is fantastic. Tons of memories and the gameplay is still rock solid.
I don't know why they don't make space sims anymore. :/
I replaced a full set of 4 N64 joysticks and thought it was incredibly easy to do. The joysticks are sold as a very contained component.
You can just buy a redesigned module from, for example, amazon and use it to replace the controller's existing stick. It's plug & play so you only need a philips screwdriver.

As long as it's not an insurmountable distance from your PC to your TV, you can run an HDMI cable and a USB extension between them. Then buy one of these and you're set:

More trouble than it's worth? Probably! But I did it and I'm happy. To each his own.
At first I thought it was a HORI branded portable monitor for PS4, but it looks like a "GAEMS G155 Sentry Personal Gaming Environment"

I have no idea what that is called or where you could get it, but I am 99% sure that you could easily make one yourself for mcuh, much cheaper.
EDIT: Just saw this post linking to the product and now I'm 100% sure that what I just said is wrong.
There's a collection called "Command & Conquer: The First Decade" that installs from the DVD and only makes you enter serial numbers. Amazon link. I think they run fine on Windows 7, but I didn't try all of them.
C&C 3 and 4, and Red Alert 3, are all on Steam, and will probably be on sale at christmas.
Pretty cheap. http://www.amazon.com/Retrolink-Nintendo-64-Classic-Enabled-Controller/dp/B008L3UUPS

Better than zip ties, use Velcro straps. This way, if you need to swap cables in or out, you're not having to clip your zipties and use new ones. These are the Velcro straps I use (and they work great!): http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001E1Y5O6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1419952299&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
And the book Masters of Doom is a really good book to learn about these folks.
Try getting some of these, I reorganized all my cables and it is really easy to just unplug and move something now
For the top of the line, sure. But mine was $149. Another quick google search and this was amidst the more expensive ones.

Yes you will need the wireless adapter (pretty much just a USB stick) from mircrosoft and you could start using a xbone controller.
25$ for the Adapter or the Bundle for 67$ if you don't have a xbone controller.
What are the length/width/depth dimensions?
Will I still be able to fit it in this?
I'm guessing I'll just have to get a new one.

Or just get the official Nintendo adapter which has native support in Dolphin now.
Yes, Windows 10 - Amazon $24.99
FYI, not sure if you already found someone to pair up with but amazon has Portal 2 for $35 and $1 for release-day shipping. That's what I ended up doing - $10 cheaper than on Steam and $5 cheaper than a 2-person bundle.
Headphones are the HyperX Cloud II and are definitelly noise cancelling.
Great headphones, couldn't be happier
just picked up masters of doom yesterday from amazon:
http://twitpic.com/5q2r5e
I've heard it's a good read, and is the tale of Carmack and Romero:
http://www.amazon.com/Masters-Doom-Created-Transformed-Culture/dp/0812972155/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310754280&sr=8-1
Also, carmack's twitter is ridiculous and funny to watch, because you never know what he is talking about:
http://twitter.com/#!/ID_AA_Carmack
Yeah you are, you can buy a PS4 OR X1 for $300 Inc. A game:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LRLJV28/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484514564&sr=8-1&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=PlayStation+4

And use something like this to hook up your N64 controller
the headset sales for 150 new and like 60 used
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Stereo-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B0053OLY9O/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1425673315&sr=8-24&keywords=playstation+3+gaming+headset
Ty for the input, I'm thinking of just selling the games as a bundle, ive seen weaker bundles go for what i want.
Using Project64, with a PC controller (you can buy N64 styled controllers online, like this one). All you would need is a copy of the ROM, which can be found almost anywhere.
Or check out Steam, sometimes they are practically giving them away.
I picked up the whole Command and Conquer series off of Frys for $10, it was a single DVD with all the games.
http://www.amazon.com/Command-Conquer-First-Decade-Pc/dp/B000CPKIT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330746919&sr=8-1

https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Slim-500GB-Console-Uncharted-4/dp/B01LRLJV28
You might have been looking at the PS4 Pro which runs $400. The pro does 4k the slim is 1080p. Horizon looks great on the slim, haven't played it on a pro but might to compare.
Off topic: Why is Amazon so much cheaper than Steam??
You just buy a little piece like this, open up the controller, unplug the old, plug in the new, and put it back together. Fairly simple, really.
I had one of these, but I used a mouse. You know, to make it closer to an even playing field.
Yeah, you have to buy the dongle as a separate item
You can always just buy a replacement stick, there are copies of the originals as well as gamecube-style ones: https://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC
From what I've read the Gamecube ones don't handle as well as the original ones, but then again they also don't wear out so easily.
And it's on sale at Amazon today for even less!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004774IPU/
You can pre-order them on Amazon for $60. Here is a link!
don't forget to fix the joystick while you are at it with a repalcement unit
Wait, what, two copies of Portal 2 for $90?? Aren't they selling for like $35 on Amazon?
Correction, $44.99 on Amazon
So, steam is basically useless here.
I use this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009OY9U/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_g23_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=147EHKTPJJMZMD9CQHVP&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846 It more than gets the job done and its really solid.

This is the one I'm getting, from one of the sellers (listing price $19.25). It was recommended in the IL-2 thread on SomethingAwful, so I trust it.
Possibly. I have 3 cats... Sooooooooooooooooooo. Hair, hair everywhere. Oh god.
But since I got a new desk from Ikea, it's above ground level so I don't get NEAR as much dust in it that it used to have.
Also, I don't know what you use to dust, but one of these works like a damn wonder. It's expensive, yes, but holy hell in a hand basket does it pump out and and get EVERYTHING out. I use it on everything that has space that could hold dust. I got mine at CompUSA for 49.99$ (same price after Tax).
Civilisation V is $15 on Amazon and and activates on Steam.

Forget compressed air, get something like this
Well 4 years of PS+ is not necessary to buy outright, and it can also be found for less than $40 usually, let alone $50. Other than that, lifetime of a console is potentially longer before a hardware upgrade is necessary. Also, there are cheaper portable console cases with screens (you actually chose one of the most expensive ones) like this one
http://www.amazon.com/Sentry-Personal-Gaming-Environment-playstation-4/dp/B00A7VK16A/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1451943511&sr=1-3&keywords=gaems
or this one
http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Portable-Monitor-Consoles-console-included/dp/B00P45U628/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1451943511&sr=1-2&keywords=gaems
which is admittedly not nearly as convenient, but is cheaper.
Anyway, I'm just trying to say that depending on your needs and habits, consoles can be cheaper, and sometimes simpler to use. Again, they can of course turn out to be more expensive in the long run, I'm just saying it's not always the case.
In the end, I just don't see the point of trying to prove that one option is better than the other, and I don't consider myself superior or inferior to other people based on whether they game or what platform they use for gaming.
Halo didn't start as an exclusive by the way. [Neither was Halo 2.] (http://www.amazon.com/Halo-2-Pc/dp/B000NV8F58/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1369426722&sr=1-2&keywords=halo+3)
For a long time, Carmack didn't even own a mattress. He slept on the floor and spent most of his time coding. They were raking in money from game sales.
