If you are going to package Gear VR with a separate controller as a design target, it's better to aim for quality. The controller you link to doesn't appear to have much more functionality than what's already in the headset (no motion controls, just a thumb stick with four buttons, 2 triggers, 'power', and 'home'?).

Technically, the Gear VR does come with a controller: it's just integrated into the side of the headset. Even the SteelSeries Stratus XL, endorsed by Oculus as I mention below, raised a couple red flags to me as a potential buyer: I'm no stranger to subpar analog components on a premium-priced controller (Ouya owner here), and this can be very annoying to say the least. This in particular:
>Some games work fine but other games just spins the game characters uncontrollably.

is a classic symptom of a shoddy analog component on a controller. No amount of software design can fix cheap or imprecise hardware components if your game calls for a certain level of precision. Second, no clip to hold the phone when playing a non-VR game. Surprisingly enough, I do play games on a phone not just in VR that require a controller and the extendable arm is indispensable to me.

Point being, I prefer not to have companies spend my money for me when there is a list of options available. Or, if they are going to go with a packaged deal in order to present a unified design target, at least make sure it's the very, very best.

That stated, my intuition tells me a game controller is something that benefits from free market competition (a company that chooses to package their product with a peripheral made by a different company is exempting the peripheral from this process). We've had game controllers for long enough to figure out more or less what a controller "is" (hello design target); let the market sort out which one is best.

You're not going to find a case that you can leave on the phone while it's in the Gear VR, OP. Instead, as others have said, look for a case that the phone can be easily slipped out of when needed, but still offers adequate protection.

Personally, I have a UAG Plasma case on my S8+. It looks and feels great (it's been one of my most favorite phone cases I've ever owned on ANY phone, to be honest), offers great edge protection from all angles, and as it is all one piece I can pop my phone out of it in less than 2 seconds.

u/hansky84 · 2 pointsr/GearVR

Hi! I bought this case from a suggestion on this subreddit.

It's worked awesome to keep everything I need for my Gear VR and then some:

  • Gear VR
  • Canned air
  • Lens cleaner
  • 2 MagicFiber cleaning cloths
  • Moga Pro Power Controller w/tablet stand (because why not)
  • Extra battery pack
  • 3-5 micro usb cables for battery pack, controller, charger, etc
  • User guides
  • Usb charger
  • Selfie stick

It's easy to carry and looks pretty cool! Here's an album of it all:

    Good luck!

Thanks. For anyone interested, this seems to have best speeds for usb flash (obviously external SSD is fastest if they work too): SanDisk Extreme PRO CZ88 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Speeds Up To 260MB/s

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HR7FWUC

Or even faster updated usb 3.1 version i just saw https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MU8TZRV/

The smaller flash drives seem to be just microSD card housings and so top out well under 100 MB/s write speed, a bit slow for copying 1440p/4K 60fps content.

Also went with a 128GB Samsung Evo Select SD card, much better write speeds than the Samsung Evo+ in the $99 immersive preorder promo.

I purchased [this fan] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01ESFZY76/ref=sxl1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467210450&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65) based off another user's review and it works great. I have a S7 edge which never really overheats, but I still like to use it. My friend has a S6 that overheats constantly and this fan fixed that. We've played minecraft for close to 2 hours before with out any issues

u/the_resident_skeptic · 2 pointsr/GearVR

They certainly do but weight might be an issue I think. The lightest solution I can think of is a small 5v fan like this pulled from an old video card or something wired to a battery pack (2 or 3 AAs). A few aluminium L brackets and some velcro should do it. Could even wire in a switch or a potentiometer to control it. I have a 1.5"x1.5" 5v fan here and it weighs 26g. Won't spin at 3v though :(.

USB fans would be quite a bit heavier. This one is 90g There's already half a kilo (1.1 lbs) hanging off my face and it's already pretty uncomfortable for me due to my "roman nose". Need to sew a thicker pad methinks.

You can get an SM-R323 for about 30 bucks or so: http://amzn.to/2B9zgoA or http://amzn.to/2hFDjQZ

Or an SM-324, which comes bundled with the Gear VR controller, for about 50 bucks or so: http://ebay.to/2hI6anU or http://ebay.to/2zUxPfv

Or you could get the SM-R323 and buy the controller separately: http://amzn.to/2zVU6K6

It's a great addition to the platform. A must have really if you want to see it at its best.

u/williamcaput · 1 pointr/GearVR

Thank you for the replies. You can switch the controller into different modes via a button combination. None of them work with the game. The buttons work outside the game though (ie select). Here's the controller for reference:
http://www.amazon.com/Snakebyte-iDroid-Rechargeable-Bluetooth-Controller/dp/B0090WBXSM/

It has great reviews, so hopefully there is a fix to get this working. Any other ideas, please post!

u/StrayCam · 1 pointr/GearVR

Get a small USB fan (probably 80mm or smaller), cut out a portion of the GearVR's faceplate and secure the fan in it. Then get a USB power bank to power the fan.

There's also this which looks interesting. I haven't seen any feedback of people using this with the GearVR, nor have I used it myself so I don't know how well it would work.

u/lurker_durker · 1 pointr/GearVR

I have a snakebyte, works great as a generic bluetooth controller. Hopefully it works.

Hey. That looks like the same one to me. I got this one from Amazon because I'm in the UK. Weirdly it's gone way up in price since I bought it 3 days ago. I got it for £48 + free shipping.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017WA5VI6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It does have a Micro USB port on the bottom that I assume is for charging. I haven't actually tried to use it yet, though, as the overheating issue sets in long before battery issues come into play and I have a quick charger so having low battery isn't really an issue.

u/Tonio50 · 1 pointr/GearVR

I think if you use it in a warm room it can heat up fast. I had the overheating recently when staying in a hotel. Nothing since apart from heavy use.
I got one of these
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ESFZY76/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has a very powerful fan and sticks onto the back of your phone...I haven't had to use it yet lol....

u/throwaway91928334 · 1 pointr/GearVR

Not to phone, to a high speed usb 3.0 drive like sandisk extreme pro, with the OTG adapter that comes with the S8. Gets better speeds than an SD card.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HR7FWUC/

Or slightly faster:

u/ThePoundDollar · 2 pointsr/GearVR

I'm 100% getting it now. Can you tell the difference between these two on Amazon? I noticed the model numbers are different but can't see anything else (other than the price). Just want to make sure I get the most recent version.

Link 1 and Link 2

u/Elrox · 2 pointsr/GearVR

I use jaws quick spit, it's made for scuba divers. works perfectly

makes sense to sell it cheaper than what they sell on Amazon or maybe better keep it ?

It's easy to apply and you won't have to worry about scratches on the screen.

u/littlerm · 2 pointsr/GearVR

I have this one and it works fine with GearVR.

IQ Shield® LiQuidSkin - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector [Full Coverage] & Lifetime Warranty - HD Ultra Clear Film - Protective Guard - Extremely Smooth / Self-Healing / Bubble-Free Shield https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BG2EJYS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_Xbh5wb7J255YS

u/NobodySpecial999 · 1 pointr/GearVR

Yes, exactly. But I think I would prefer something more like this: Amazon Link
I'm thinking that the dongle with the cable between the ends might swing around and work its way loose if used while in VR. The one piece unit might be preferable.

u/Aimbot69 · 3 pointsr/GearVR

I bought a soft shell clam case off Amazon for like $15usd.

For Samsung Gear VR Virtual Reality Headset Hard Travel Storage Carrying Case Bag by Hermitshell https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CNN2ABS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2o5BybNRTJ1PS

u/ChopinLives81 · 1 pointr/GearVR

I just got this Hermit shell case. It's semi-hard and should fit a controller inside.

u/smithfire980 · 1 pointr/GearVR

Saw some conversation about controllers in here. I just discovered last night the ouya controller from the ouya game console works Great! http://www.amazon.com/OUYA-Wireless-Controller/dp/B002I0GX38
Started Dread halls, walked a few feet and... I chickened out... again:)

u/Briwil78 · 7 pointsr/GearVR

You wouldn't expect much, but I got this yesterday and it works well so far, on the limited games I've tried it on.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0104BDNW6/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_awdo_9Q37wbTQ0CM73

u/Koooookalo · 4 pointsr/GearVR

I use this bag, which fits the Gear VR, a moga pro power, charger, headphones, keys, wallet, and even my Tab S2 in the rear pocket.

u/blind_zombie · 1 pointr/GearVR

or you can spit on it. I'm not kidding.

You can use the old divers trick. My goggles used to fog up when I went snorkeling so you just rub some spit on it and it stops it from fogging. You can even buy "spit" if you think this is disgusting http://www.amazon.com/Jaws-Quick-Spit-Antifog-Spray/dp/B00PDE1TO4

u/alternativeness · 2 pointsr/GearVR

Something like this: Clarity Defog should do the trick. I've used them on my radio control FPV goggles in the past but I was going to purchase some Z-wax this time around for my FPV goggles and my Gear VR. A lot of people use "Cat Crap" wax on goggles, Z-Wax seemed to have slightly better reviews though.

BTW, the anti fog stuff for cars only works on glass and is unsuitable for plastic lenses as /u/DiabolicSJ said.
