Within your budget:
Viewmaster
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011EG5HJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1XeCxbMKD9AJ9

Slightly over your budget but a better headset:
I AM Cardboard DSCVR Headset
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018G17K52/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IYeCxbTAHEVFK

Over budget but the best headset in its price range (button is a bit iffy on iPhones though for some reason)
BOBOVR VR Z4
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CEBKXJK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oZeCxb4ZVCA18

I own all of these, they all have the button and work with iPhones. I had to modify the button on the BoboVR to get it to work properly though.
The Viewmaster is ok, the field of view isn't great, and it looks a bit kiddy, but it is robust and has good clarity.
The DSCVR is pretty much just a plastic version of Cardboard 2.0, but sometimes the more straightforward the better, I found it very good, although the strap that holds the phone looks like it will wear overt time.
BoboVR is by far the best though all round, great comfort, great fov, adjustable lenses (which the other 2 don't have) and the headphones are actually really good.

Cardboard will not work with any regular games, since it requires the display to be split into two separate images, and looking at a regular game in Cardboard is a good way to induce headache.

I don't know of any head mount like the one you are looking for, but it is pretty easy to build one yourself with an existing cardboard box. Just make sure you use one large lens with about 3X magnification and place it about 10cm/4 inches away from the screen.

By using one lens (e.g. a rectangular fresnel reading loupe, preferably the size of your screen) both eyes will easily see the full screen. This doesn't work well with two lenses like in Cardboard, even if you use lenses with much larger focal length/lower magnification, as you will get a lot more distortion when looking through the edges of the lenses, or your vision will be completely blocked. The primary function of the lens here is not to make the image larger like in VR, but to allow your eyes to focus on the screen at close distance, so you can actually place into some kind of headset.

I tried it with a handheld magnifier similar to this one because I wanted to walk around in the Epic Citadel tech demo with a bluetooth controller, and it worked just fine. Be aware that looking around with a controller is a great way to get motion sick.

i hear the bobo VR Z4 is really good but a huge pain on your nose. i personally have 4 headsets and the best one for my phone which also has a 5.5" screen is the google cardboard 2.0 kit. the one i have is the MINKANAK headset. it has the perfect FOV i have ever seen and the lenses are really great too. it also has a headstrap, you can get it for $16 here http://www.amazon.com/Cardboard-MINKANAK-Virtual-Compatible-Smartphone/dp/B015GDVMIO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

AHHHH CRAP wrong link :(((((

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F31CWP6?psc=1

Wow, haven't seen it for 40 bucks on amazon prime. For anyone who wants to get it via amazon prime, this is probably the best price you'll see in a while. It doesn't say BoboVRZ4, but I am pretty sure it's just a rebranded, but same model. ..Also, if you order Amazon Prime, and it isn't right, you can easily return.

Yup thats exactly it, as for selection, cursor already exists in android if you pair it with a mouse - I use a Rii Mini Bluetooth Keyboard It's a tonne of fun.

I also mirror the touch support so you can still tap icons on either side of the SBS (of course when it's incase this is useless)

SBS button in the drop down menu is an amazing idea! Thanks will look into it

Cardboard is great if you are brand new to VR. But once you see how it works, I recommend upgrading to something like a Bobo Z4 headset or one that has head straps on it.

I imagine Google will discontinue cardboard once Daydream is fully up and running.

Link to a Bobo Z4, but I'm sure there are better deals out there

I just installed Half-Life 1 on my phone with the Xash3D VR app (search the posts in this subreddit for help). Required a root, but so far it works well with my SteelSeries Free controller.

Apparently QVR (Quake) is pretty good too.

u/shredtilldeth · 1 pointr/GoogleCardboard

I have a G3, a slightly older version of this controller and the Bobo Z4. It's an AMAZING setup, given what it is. QVR (Quake VR) is one of the coolest things you can do with it, since it's a fully fledged actual game that you can play. Don't waste your time with those piddly small controllers. They are all pretty much garbage.

From what I have read on this reddit, your best bet is probably a BoboVR z4/Virtoba x5/(insert clone here) which is around $40 on Amazon, as it will support phones with screens up to 6 inches.

It includes a capacitive button for Cardboard apps, but you will still need a controller for other apps that require one. I picked up one of these for $10 on sale ($15 now) and it works pretty well... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EO5QPN2/

Churuntek

Tho the link to the exact one I purchased is currently unavailable. I looked up his name followed by bobo vr and found a model with headphones and also a model without headphones.

Owl BOBOVR Z4 with HEAD STRAP AND HEADPHONES - High quality Google Cardboard VR Headset for 4.7-6 inch smartphones iPhone, Samsung Galaxy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EUXVRL8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vkDkzb08RCGNT

This link looks the same as the one I got. Hope that helps.. I'm unsure what you mean by being fake, but mine works perfectly fine.

u/Maeno-san · 1 pointr/GoogleCardboard

Just get one that's a good price that comes with a headstrap. If you have amazon prime, get it there so you can get free 2 day shipping.

edit: This is the one I have. I do recommend getting a black one, I've heard that lighter colors can sometimes be distracting.

With a mini USB adapter I bought off of amazon.
Like this

Get the USB controller app from the play store. And presto it works on every game I've tried.

Try browsing amazon. Here's one that I've had my eyes on that seems very decent for a first (or second) headset. It has a capacitive touch button and an nfc button. I don't own it myself, but it seems very good.

u/sbonds · 1 pointr/GoogleCardboard

This $22 device worked great for audio without drilling, but costs more than the View Master itself!

i bought this strap and am going to cut it and attach it to mine. only $8 with amazon prime and it is pretty large and adjustable.

Here's a rebranded Z4 on amazon (with prime shipping) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F31CWP6?psc=1

u/LjLies · 1 pointr/GoogleCardboard

I just noticed that there's a rebranding of the BoboVR Z4, from the "Uniify" brand, that has three separate versions sold on Amazon: the UV001, the UV002 and the UV003.

What the differences are is anyone's guess, and the prices don't ramp up with the version(?) numbers, and of course the pictures and text are just generic... but the fact there are three of them seems to match my understanding that so far there have been three different versions (original, stretchy-cord, faux-leather).

Windows mixed reality headsets are down to ~$214 new with controllers. It isn't unusual for them to sell for $190 NIB on ebay, $140 w/o controllers.

u/rang-rig · 1 pointr/GoogleCardboard

Would TTS, Audible, or a stand serve the purpose? Just saying because the glare from a VR headset will fry eyes...

I forgot a C.... I always do that... xD

Bit downside is that this doesn't come with strap so you have to hold it... and the fact that there are no padding doesn't make it ideal for long term use

I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MHSPNH8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and i didn't liked. So i was thinking to take this one http://www.durovis.com/dive.html. Has any body tried this product with the nexus 5 ? By the way i tried this one too http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LZGBU3O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and cardboard sucks.

I use an iPega controller I found on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/iPega-Bluetooth-Controller-Android-Wireless/dp/B00AGDW306 Never had any issues with it so far. I had a Snakebyte iDroid, too, but it was DoA: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090WBXSM/ I figure I just got the bad one. And for some reason it was only $25 when I got it back in August, not $60-$100 like I'm seeing all over Amazon now. Different model?
