It should be fine asking here, most of us in /r/Gunpla are subbed here too anyway.

Anyway, if your Bf has never built a gundam model before he should probably start with a cheaper High Grade (or HG) model first, they are very simple and won't look that amazing but it works as an introduction.

If your Bf has built a gundam model before then you should probably get him a Master Grade (or MG) model, they tend to be leaps and bounds better than the HG models but they do require some discipline and a modest amount of experience to put together.

I should note that gundam model kits don't have english instructions, but the illustrations used in the instructions are excellent and don't really need additional text for you to follow them. It's not anything major but it might cause confusion if you don't know about it before hand.

Amazon is probably your best bet for where to buy from, you're just more certain of the support you'll get if there is a problem and the savings you might get from ebay would be marginal at best. You could potentially buy from Hobby Link Japan which will feature better base prices and has a good reputation, but they ship from Japan so the shipping cost might not be worth it sometimes.

And finally I went looking for Heavy Arms kit on Amazon already and found a HG version and a MG version which is currently on sale. You could get them both for just about $50 before shipping. This is great if your Bf has never put together a kit before, he could get used to how things are done with the HG kit, then used what he's learned on the more difficult MG kit.

1- a pair of nippers! http://www.amazon.com/Xuron-2175-Maxi-Shear-Flush-Cutter/dp/B000IBU0YC/ref=pd_sim_328_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=31worx20hHL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1NM0NMHRY8GXVMGXPBJH You can get a good pair for 15 bucks off amazon, but chances are you might have some around the house from a tool kit, I actually use some old bigger ones, and they work just fine. Here they are: http://puu.sh/oYkry/e4484c7ddc.jpg This is to get the parts off the runners (the frames the parts go on) you CAN use a knife but you may damage the part.

2. Something to get the nubs off, either a hobby knife (you can find some for 5 bucks) or some very light grade sanding paper (but your fingernails can suffice for some)

That's it. That's all you really need to put one together, honestly. Remember to take ur time and look at the instructions carefully, the 1/100 IBO kits are great from what i hear and you got one of the coolest ones. :D IF you want to add further detail to the thing, you can look up panel lining, but i dont think it's necessary for the 1/100 IBO kits.

I don't think its discontinued per se, but you can still get it on Amazon although its more expensive than the OVA Version which is the better deal technically.
HLJ seems to have it on backorder but that can mean a lot more than the 4-6 weeks they say. And finally there's one available on Mandarake if you wanna try that, though be warned its not terribly hard to order from them but it isn't exactly as straightforward as one would hope for.

I still suggest the OVA version, but if its because of the Ver Ka Decals(or ABS frame) then you have some options to try.

Hope this helps.

There have been some great DVD / Blu-Ray releases by RightStuf in NA. I might recommend those because once they are out of print, it may be a long time before someone releases them again. There is also the absolutely superb "Mobile Suit Gundam: Origin" graphic novels on amazon for very reasonable prices.

If you are dead set on a model, I would recommend getting either a Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin HG Model or an RG model. But it's difficult to say which one to get, because which suit to get varies a lot from person to person.

However, one alternative option would be: https://www.amazon.com/Gundam-RB-79-Ball-Ver-Scale/dp/B0006TNAIO

If you reply to this comment I can give you more suggestions.

For the Universal Century, there was this excerpt from Animerica's Gundam: The Official Guide:

>For all its capabilities, the Zaku is relatively easy to operate. Its movements are mostly automated, allowing a single pilot to steer the mobile suit and operate its weapons using a bare minimum of controls- a pair of foot pedals for braking and acceleration, plus joysticks for steering and targeting. Future generations of mobile suits can do little to improve on this system, and most subsequent cockpit enhancements are in the areas of visual display and pilot protection.

The [original version] (http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/404868681X) was not very interesting, to be honest. About the same amount of Information as the MS Encyclopedia series, which is a short paragraph at most.

Though it does say 'enhanced and expanded edition' I would imagine it's mostly just an update along the lines of the MS Encyclopedias, just adding things since the 2010 edition. The presence of the UC- Nahel Argama seems to suggest this.

If you already know how to draw, then try Scott Robertsons books.

They are not about drawing gundam but about drawing hard objects in general. Which is much more important then learning to draw a single thing as you can transfer the skill to anything.

The High Frontier by Gerard O'Neill is the book you're looking for. Its responsible for the O'Neill Cylinder and most of the ideas about space colonies used by Tomino in making Mobile Suit Gundam.

They vary in price and some can be quite difficult to get. Here's some Wing books on Amazon.
