AAAaaand you asked about a book to read.

Today, start a paid subscription to American Iron magazine. They have a lot of bolt-on/bolt-up mod articles and reviews of aftermarket and factory mods and parts. I find LOTS of useful info in the pages of this rag for simple "how to" stuff on my twin-cam Road King.

http://www.aimag.com/

Don't just surf the website, you want a new issue showing up at your front door, once a month or 6 weeks or however often they publish nowadays.

Start finding the good video channels on Youtube for things like this. There's a ton of vintage and newer model builders with instructional videos on Youtube. Take advantage of them.

There is NO substitute for the right tools for the right job. This is critical- when your service manual or Donny's book says "use Harley Davidson tool number....... so and so", that means you need to spend the $$ on the correct tool for the application. Hold on, yes, there are a LOT of Harley-Davidson tools that can be constructed from loose odds and ends in a well-used garage, but that's the kind of stuff that will require an old hand standing around saying "Hey, you can also use a piece of 1" angle iron, a quarter inch drill bit, and a couple 1/4-20 bolts". No problem. We'll be here to help with this, and Youtube will offer all kinds of "how to" stuff like that. A proper bike lift (Handy air lifts are the best, but you can get a Harbor Freight hydraulic lift for about $300, if you use the coupons in American Iron each month.

Once you have chosen (and purchased) the bike you're gonna own, you're gonna want the full, 500-1000 page factory service manual the mechanics use at the dealership. It's a good read, as Harley puts together a proper service manual, with which you can pretty much do any service/repair you could possibly need to do.

After you have the bike and the service manual for the correct year range (I can probably find you a .pdf copy online), then you're gonna need to figure out what your plan of action is. If it's "I never met a performance mod I didn't like", there are specific books to get. If it's "I want my bike to go 100,000 miles before I have to do any motor work other than tune ups", it's gonna mean another set of books entirely. If it's "I want my bike to pull 5th gear wheelies at 90mph, and still get 100,000 miles out of my bike", you're gonna wait til you've already done this once or twice, before on to this stuff.

All this having been said, I'm gonna recommend looking at any of Donny Petersen's books on V-Twin performance.

He has written specialized volumes on Harleys going back to 1936, and any shop is incomplete without his Shovelhead, Evolution, and Twin Cam books, and you can apply much of the model-specific stuff to any, merely because it's good info/method/etc.

I've never handled the book, but it looks like it might be right up your alley

There's a bunch more stuff to do, but this'll get you started.

Be sure to read up on how to be a better rider. I highly recommend reading Proficient Motorcycling available in both paper and e-book.

Welcome to FREEDOM.

I can’t speak for clutch but for headlights and turn signals all I can say is Amazon. I got this LED Headlight:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018LXCV4U?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

And these front signals:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07F1G3P1G?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

I have no complaints and they saved me probably $400 if I bought them from the dealership.

Read the reviews for reassurance if you’d like but they are a must have!

Hope this helps.

I ride my 883N sportster all year round in Norfolk, VA and that includes some 30 degree days. I got a set of these and installed them and they work great. They block the wind off my hands very well.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079L27P4T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For gloves I use either a set of Alpinestar Drystar link below or a pair of heated gloves with my Heated jacket. Most of the time I am to lazy to deal with the heated gear and use the alpinestars though and they work great and are really warm.

https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/alpinestars-corozal-drystar-gloves

As for speed i can tell you that on my 883N I ride everywhere at 80+ mph and the worse my gas mileage is down to is 39MPG. On longer rides i get in the 50s. I did however put in a stage 1 setup with new Vance and Hines short shots (they are loud), the Screaming eagle air filter and a Vance and Hines FP3 which lets me adjust the ECM. I have gone on a 380 mile trip with this bike at around 80 the entire way in 40 degree weather with no issues.

As for the headlight i use a $50 variant of the daymaker from Amazon and have had it 3 years so far with no issues. I also installed a 6" lightbar on the front below the headlight in case i need extra light and to help me be seen during the day.

For the seat i have a 2up sundowner seat that is a little wider and i love it. I actually replaced that seat like 2nd day i had the bike so my wife and daughter could ride. Been on it 3 years now.

Below is a youtube video i did for the viking bags i have on my bike that will show you most of my mods just missing my hand guards.

I run a truck-lite
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007K8AA7I/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And these cheap foglights

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01E69KPFU/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a real hard time driving my car at night. I cant see crap unless I have my high beams on.

Honestly I wasnt impressed with the headlight at first, but once it was aimed properly Im quite happy. The fogs are almost to bright. Being a new rider I was very apprehensive about driving at night. Last night I had no choice and I will now say that ill take my bike over my car in the dark every time. I was able to see everything much better than the high beams on my car. This was running the low beam and fogs.

On a side note, I am now being told I have to lead if im in a group because my lights are so bright.

I have this https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-Max-5001-5044-Motorcycle-Scissor/dp/B0196PAZ1S and I'm happy with it. If you go with it buy a 7/8 deep socket and leave it on the stand for easy adjustments

Seconded (thirded?). I bought a can of high heat paint off amazon for a rebuild that I ended up letting a buddy use on his Sporty's pipes. disassemble the whole shebang and tape over the ends, paint it on a nice day, let it totally dry. This stuff goes on almost like primer so it didn't need much prep work either.

Point you in the direction...

Honestly, just start watching as many youtube videos and reading as much as you can. I guess I would start with these two books:

The Original Wild Ones

[Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga](http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0760335370?pc_redir=1412297263&robot_redir=1]

You can also start reading up on motorcycle club history in general.

Or, you know, find an established club and go hang around with them. Books and the internet will teach you a lot, but going out and living it is eve better.

a friend gave this book to me back when I got my first sportster, and this book provides a solid overview of all aspects of bike customizing for a total noob.

I do - since it's the only mod I've installed myself (so far:)

This is the link to the product in Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F1G3P1G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

It was a breeze to install, it looks *awesome* both day and night, and it functions flawlessly (when turn signal is on, white LEDs are completely off, and vice versa).

I bought this a couple of months ago for a rear shock swap on my Road Glide and it worked perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0196PAZ1S?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Sure thing. I got the fairing off Amazon for around 30 bucks

Front

Fairing

It comes as a "translucent black" so I just lightly sanded and sprayed it black. Bolts right on to the headlight screws.

INteresting. Not available on amazon right now but Ill check it out. Thanks

u/The1Honkey · 1 pointr/Harley

I have this: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Charger-Starter-Floodlight-Phone/dp/B01B6N52E8

It's a battery jumper and it has plug ins for general electronics and a flood light. I literally throw it in my bag and plug in. The charge on it lasts for fucking ever and it never seems to fail that someone's battery dies while riding and needs a jump. I've also had bad battery experiences so I'm weird about running any extra electronics that I don't have to from the battery.

Oh! Were doing biker book suggestions! I can help! The range from undercover cops to actual members.

I've read these already
