If you're in a small-ish 1 bedroom apartment, I found that the passive dehumidifiers work just fine. Maybe get a couple and keep one in a general area and one in the closet to protect your clothes and shoes. I think you can get them at any hardware store or order a reusable one off of amazon.

My roommate and I had this little guy in our bathroom to keep the moisture down and it worked great! https://www.amazon.com/Improved-Eva-dry-E-333-Renewable-Dehumidifier/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1487965909&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=passive+dehumidifier

This is something you can fully do yourself. Check Youtube for 'beard trimming' and 'beard grooming.'

  1. Buy a beard trimmer. Buy one at Target or K-Mart, probably Target for better selection. Wahl is an industry standard, but it doesn't matter too much.

  2. Choose how far below your jaw you want the beard to go (to avoid 'neck beard'). Trim along that line. If you screw up, cut a little higher as you even it out. Don't stretch your neck because the cut will be uneven when you're done stretching. Generally, you do want the beard to be on your neck a little. A beard that runs tightly along your jaw can look weird, and it's hard to trim well. Maybe start out experimenting with trimming the edge of your beard where it is now, just to get a feel for how trimming works.

  3. With the trimmer, curve the corner where your beard turns upward toward your ear. One diagonal cut works if you're worried.

  4. Trim your beard to the same length everywhere using the length adjustment on your trimmer. Always move in a downward motion. The longer or more curly your beard, the more it will look less-groomed, which might lead you to trimming it short. Just don't trim so short it looks like you're still trying to grow a beard.

  5. Wash your beard like you do the top of your head.

I'm a fan of the Wahl Trim 'n' Vac which sucks up hair as it falls. I think it's discontinued, but one or two other brands make a vac model. The trimmer has a removable head. Use the head to trim at a specified length. Remove the head to trim the edge/line of your beard.

You pretty much need to learn this because beards require daily maintenance, just like shaving.

As for which barber to use, I'd go with the one closest to your home. If you don't like 'em, don't go back. McKinleyville Barber Shop in the Safeway shopping center is fine.

There was a time when HSU had a barbershop inside the university center (along with a lot of other nice things long since lost).

I used this dehumidifier (Eva-dry Edv-2200 Dehumidifier, Mid-Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QTW6KQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_RzUTub15GCPXM) when I was living in Humboldt. I left it on all day and it didn't make a noticeable difference on my bill. Worked pretty well for a small place.

I'm not sure what a PEET boot dryer is but I got a Serius ski boot dryer and it works well. Sometimes takes more than overnight for my thick leather work boots if they are soaked (but it's also damn as hell in my house) but I've been pretty happy with them.
