Used Book in Good Condition
The third book, Journey to Chandara really brought back the original feel of discovery the first had. I liked the second but I liked exploring the world more than doodling around with crystal doohickies. Definitely an awesome book. I still have them even though they are a little worse for wear.
Try Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds. First of all, probably my favourite space epic of all time, the Revelation Space story arc is amazing and I love his focus on technology and space travel/combat. That said, Chasm City is more of a self-contained story that takes place primarily around a particular planet, and is one of the best twisty narratives I've had the pleasure of reading.
Specifically, Chasm City itself was a "golden age" style metropolis of kilometre-high skyscrapers and technology before a nano-plague took hold and transformed everything into a grotesque caricature of what it was. The city as it is "now" consists of the upper echelons existing in their now-dampened utopia while the slums far below have fallen to the poor and criminal.
...it's about time I read it again.
The book this is a cover to is amazing.

The "Age of ... " series by Lovegrove is great.
Thanks for the link, there's heaps of amazing art on that blog. I got the image out of this book: https://www.amazon.com/Treasury-American-Illustration-1881-1938-History/dp/0486242803 and they just called it advertising drawing. Echoes does seem like an appropriate title though, it's pretty frustrating how hard it is to find accurate information about a lot of art, your source even has a conflicting date so I'm not sure what's right.
As for what it was advertising, it could have been anything. I was just looking at ad art on this blog: http://www.graphicine.com/maxfield-parrish-the-present/ and the images are completely irrelevant to what they're selling, lol.
I love Wayne Barlowe's work so much, it is detailed, fantastical, organic, and sometimes terrifying. I spent a long time attempting to find and buy my rare copy of Wayne Barlowe's Inferno, and it was worth it. If you see it, buy it! I copied down the description from my copy of 'Barlowe's Inferno':
>The perimeters of Hell are salients to be watched over, borders of constant dispute with the Enemy From Above. They are a region of endless ebb and flow as characterized by the city-large blocks of buildings that float without direction over the smouldering landscape. Because of its sense or remove from the heart of Dis, I decided that extraordinary warning systems needed to exist to alert the armies of Darkness. These Watchtowers with their giant, bone-lidded orbs seem perfect for the job. Encrusted with barracks and other military buildings, appropriate to a hostile frontier, the archiorganic towers are the demons' first line of defense. Surmounting them are gaping jaws attached to long tubular necks that can swiftly extend to scoop up flying prey.
>Prowling around the Watchtowers are two Sphinx-like Beasts. Barely controllable, they are seen here sharpening their claws on the Watchtowers' flanks sending buildings, debris and demons showering to the ground below.
Wayne Barlowe is well known for his realistic paintings of surreal alien (or fantastic) life. His Barlowe's Guides to extraterrestrials and to fantasy are his interpretations of specific creatures and beings from well-known science fiction and fantasy literature. His Inferno is an interpretation of the demonology contained in the Grimoire of Honorius. His Expedition is a complex look of the speculative evolution of the fictional planet Darwin IV. - wiki

There is also this one that I have, still available on Amazon looks like. Very neat!
This excellent book tells the story of Shackelton's attempt on the South Pole.
Graphic novel, if that's more to your liking.
swoon
Bless you. Bless you long and hard. Saving this version right now.
Have you seen the second book in the Journey trilogy? It's called Quest and I think it just came out last month!
This would make a great scene for The Buried Giant where the boatmen questions husband and wife and only takes one to the Island...
But fan of this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1616552409/ref=pd_aw_sim_21_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=51d0UVBv9tL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL100_SR100%2C81_&refRID=0ZGKP81ST7DC55NPMNDS
they surprisingly do carry it huh
He actually wrote some books about his world [here] (https://www.amazon.com/Tales-Loop-Simon-St%C3%A5lenhag/dp/1624650392).It's kind of like a alternate reality version of our world if we had advanced tech in some aspects of the 70-80's. (The whole robot thing along with the old cars, ect.)
I'm not sure where you're looking but the first hit on Amazon is $18.32
