A couple books I can give off the top of my head that I have would be
Also
I just realized you didn't really ask for dinosaur books but more future animals field guides, not really sure why I did that lmaoo still check those out
Here's the first book on Amazon, it has the rest of them on there too. I'm sure you can just pick them up at the library, but Amazon does a good job of giving you a preview and some reviews and stuff.
The only problem I have with the series is the cover art on the first couple books. They don't resemble characters in the book at all. Heck, they hardly even resemble scenes in the book!
Other than that, Bluemoonflame got it right. It also happens to be a "rags to riches" story following the main character Tavi.
Her Tumblr account. She is also responsible for one of my favorite ever comic books Rabbit Head, and also designed Queen Chrysalis in MLP!
This painting was created for Barlowe’s speculative xenobiology work Expedition. For the Amazon page, please click here:

Also, Barlowe's Inferno (for the work that started it all). He also wrote an additional book called God's Demon, fleshing out some more of the world he created with his paintings.
Edit: With Amazon links now!
Reminds me of a part of this book.

There's also a Russian version of the Rusalka, which is the spirit of a drowned young woman that, by wanting desperately to be alive again, drains the life from things around her. Tragic figure, but still scary.
Here's a good novel about a Rusalka: http://www.amazon.com/Rusalka-C-J-Cherryh/dp/0345359534/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1419440256&sr=1-1&keywords=rusalka
No, but that did send me on the right track and I found it! The Discovery of Dragons by Graeme Base!
I used to read "The New Dinosaurs" as a kid. It's an alternative evolutionary path that dinosaurs might have taken. Has some killer illustrative work to boot!
