I swear by the spice packets(https://www.amazon.com/Oriental-Beef-Spices-Bo-Kho/dp/B005IEIZ1O) you can find in most Asian grocery stores. You still need the lemongrass, fish sauce and a few other things, but it simplifies it a bit. My mother-in-law is the best Vietnamese cook I know, and she uses them, so I don't feel like I'm cheating. If you're going to use individual spices, make sure you get the right kind of cinnamon stick(https://images.app.goo.gl/fQSyYwhG671NPbQGA).
