A week really isn't so much, once you work yourself up to it. A friend of mine did water for 40 days. Now that's actually something! He kept a journal of the experience, and posted it online. I'm trying to find a link, and I'll post it if I can find it. On water, I do have to conserve my energy a bit. There are definitely no 25 mile per day bike rides like I do on juice. The idea behind water fasting is to allow the body to achieve massive clearing/restoration. In my experience, there are no consequences that come from water fasting. In fact, much the opposite. The level of healing, mental clarity, and overall well being felt during my water fasts makes the effects of juice fasting pale in comparison, but it is pretty intense.

As far as getting juices is concerned, I'm rather much a purist. I don't even like drinking non-organic juices, but will do so (Jamba Juice) in an extreme emergency. I will not, for any reason drink pasteurized juices (Odwalla, Columbia Gorge, etc.), as these juices are not raw, and would fall below my standards of acceptable foods as a raw-foodist. I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help in this regard, as I'm pretty much a hard-ass when it comes to these things. I simply do not compromise, and would rather "go without" than consume something substandard. From my perspective, this is one of the greatest strengths of the practice of juice fasting--the constant reinforcement of self discipline. After these many years, the problems experienced in the situations that you propose are quite simply irrelevant to me. For example, If I had to go on a trip sometime this year, and it was impossible/inconvenient to juice, I could shift to water for a few days. It simply isn't a concern. Years of practice have brought me to this point, and the knowledge that I can do such a thing is a very comforting thing. It is an extremely empowering feeling. I would even go as far to say that this self-discipline aspect of juicing is much more important than any physical improvements that I get from juicing.

For variety, I keep it simple, but also gravitate toward what is in season. When citrus is in season, I juice a lot of that. When watermelons are in season, I juice a lot of watermelons. In the dog days of Summer, a week or two of straight watermelon isn't unheard of. My staples (kale, spinach, chard, celery, cucumber, cilantro, carrots, beets, apples, lemons, ginger) are almost always available year round.

There are several books available on the subject of juicing, but many are packed with outdated/unscientific claims. You might want to track down some Normal Walker books just for fun. One book that I generally recommend is The Big Book of Juices. (get the paperback version). It is nothing but hundreds and hundreds of juice recipes, all illustrated and graded on various benefits. It's cheap too.

People seem to like this juicer over on Amazon. Some reviewers recommend saving up for a more expensive one, and I would tend to agree (if at all possible), but that one seems like it would do the job just fine.

Apparently, it's best to drink your juice soon after making it in order to get the most nutritional benefit, and this is especially the case with centrifugal juicers (the kind you're considering). They run at higher speeds than masticating juicers, thus producing more heat and oxidation, which reduces the nutrient quality of the juice. I think I've heard that with centrifugal juicers, you should drink the juice within a day of making it, but ideally right away. Juice from masticating juicers can be stored for a few days. Either way, it's best to store it in the fridge in airtight containers, if possible.

Also, I would not recommend juicing bananas. They just turn to mush and produce hardly any juice. I've also found that berries, to a lesser extent, tend to do this. I avoid juicing them since they're so expensive and so much of them is wasted in the juicing process. Everything else on your list looks perfect for juicing though :)

Edit: Forgot to mention that when juicing leafy greens like kale and spinach with a centrifugal juicer, you should make them as compact as possible. I also know that some people wrap them around carrots, so you could try that. Good luck!

I've read that wheatgrass thrives in cooler weather. My first batch has done surprisingly well in the middle of summer (It averages around 80-85 here in West Virginia). My setup is on a table on my back porch. It is shaded almost all day until 6 pm or so. I water it once a day until the tray leaks.

The kit I purchased included trays, soil and azomite. This product is amazing. I'm used to store bought wheatgrass that is grown in a small 4" by 4" container on some kind of absorbent pad (absorbent pad = no nutrients). This soil and azomite produces some amazing stuff.

I feel great. I've been taking between 2 and 4 oz. of straight wheatgrass for the past several days, and I look and feel excellent. I am trying to clean up my diet and some other bad habits. Once I do, I think the effect of the grass will be even greater.

Here is a pretty simple vid on growing.

And this is the kit I used, and have had success with. It includes a book and detailed instructions.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Couple of comments on a juicer:

I own a Breville I think it is a good juicer but cleanup creates such a chore I think it discourages my use of it.

I have investigated and believe the Champion Juicer is a better all around fit as it requires very little in the way of constant maintenance and its cost is in line.

Here is the link - http://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Duty-Commercial-Juicer-Color-Black/dp/B000E4C53M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373289445&sr=8-1&keywords=champion+juicer

I have met the owner of they company at a ExpoWest and they seem to have a passion for the Champion product.

I also like the pulp - so in general I use my Blendtec constantly and keep the fiber - I know many would say this is not juicing and perhaps they are correct.

this is the juicer i have bought.

i am very new to the juicing thing. dont know too much about it. watched that juicing documentary where the guy does a 60 day juice fast.
thought i would implement the juicer into my diet first. make a load of the recipes ive seen. and probably make a few myself and then go on a 15 day juice fast, then if i decide to go further who knows maybe 60 days... only time will tell.
im a kind of all or nothing person.
dont know if i will be able to not have weed during the experiance who knows... but friends said they would give me weed leafs to juice too, extremely good for you! have a look into it if your interested. its basically using the plant as a vegtable.
i have an vaporising cig thing too that i will use so no smoking at all during the process. although quiting weed for the process would be great. i do smoke far too much of it.

A bit of ginger, like 1/2", works well in beet juice, which you can also add kale to. The burning sensation is okay and many people also make 'ginger shots' which are usually a lemon and ~1/2" of ginger. I forget why, but ginger is good for you.

This is a fantastic book that has a lot of good recipes and a section that describes the health benefits of different ingredients.

Go buy Joe Cross's book, Reboot With Joe (https://www.amazon.com/Reboot-Joe-Juice-Diet-Healthy/dp/1626340811) as it will have all the resources you need. I've done a 48 day and a 15 day and found it to be the best source of info and recipes.

As for calories, you will eat fewer calories which is what helps you lose weight. The secret is to drink as much juice as you can, 6 to 7 servings a day, and you'll be fine. Sweet fruit (as opposed to non sweet fruit like cucumbers) should be as limited as palatable. The goal is to drink green plants as much as you can, using the other juices to keep your motivation up and give you some other vitamins. Drinking a rainbow is a common juicing phrase, have a green juice, then a red one, another green, then a yellow, another green and then an orange. By doing this and by rotating your greens between the different green plant families you'll do fine.

AMZCHEF Slow Masticating Juicer Cold Press Juicer Extractor Machine Slow Juicer Vertical Reverse Function Quiet Motor Big Feed Chute|Vegetable&Fruit|Juice Jug & Brush 56RPM BPA-Free https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TC59WH2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ff4TDbFBQDYA2

This is what I got and it works great. I'm pretty sure it's a clone of the breville Big Squeeze at less than half the cost. I haven't ran into any issues so far, and if I do I bought the optional 3 year warranty as well.

It's a slow juicer so you get all the benefits of that, and a bigger yield.

I gave up juicing for a while just because it was so much work. One thing that's helped me out is making one drink at a time instead of a whole pitcher-full. I don't use the pitcher at all anymore, in fact. I bought several plastic shaker bottles from Bed Bath and Beyond and they fit perfectly under the spout. My juice consistency has gone way up. This along with using produce bags in the waste bin has made clean up a breeze and saves me a lot of time.

Here's an amazon link to the bottles i use. They're good on the go as well.

I just purchased this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HR1861-Whole-Juicer-Aluminium/dp/B0007XHGHA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371820842&sr=8-1&keywords=juicer

I've made green juice every day for the past week, and it's working well. Luckily, they introduced food waste disposal in my apartment complex the day it arrived (Edinburgh). I had a cheaper one in the US back in 2007, and this one is definitely easier to clean and yields more juice in comparison. That said, there's still some water left in the pulp when I throw it out, so a higher price juicer might pay off in the long run if you're going to be juicing a lot. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the advice, /u/Sepplinn! I recently purchased The Ultimate Book of Modern Juicing: More than 200 Fresh Recipes to Cleanse, Cure, and Keep You Healthy by Mimi Kirk. This book has some amazing recipes! I can not wait to use pulp to create dog treats!

I came across Komboucha in the book. I didn't know what it was, so I ran off to Whole Foods to purchase a bottle. It's delicious, so I want to use the recipe to create my own. Aside from Mason Jars, what are the best types of air-tight bottles? I need to purchase some to make the Komboucha, but I have no idea what to buy.

I don't know if you've purchased yet but here BLACK+DECKER JE2200B 400-Watt Fruit and Vegetable Juice Extractor with Custom Juice Cup, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ZDNKSS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_K6-yybW44CHN2 is a good one (price/review wise) that I ordered as a beginner juicer.. Anyone have this?

I'll go with it til it dies out and then upgrade to a Breville :-)

I use a pineapple slicer like this which is great for getting the meaty part of the pineapple out with no mess; then I squeeze the rest of the pineapple to get about half a cup of pineapple juice from it - after all is said and done I make sure to strain the whole juice for a super smooth drink. (usually I split one pineapple into two 32oz juice blend servings)

u/purpletube5678 · 1 pointr/Juicing

I have the omega, but I read you're trying to save $. I was using this one while I stayed at my aunt's doing a juice cleanse for 30 days. It was a solid performer, and greens came out dry.

Good question to ask.

Thrive and Thrive Fitness have more on building muscle on a vegan diet.

More science behind not needing meat is in Eat To Live.

Body weight doesn't tell me my progress. Needing smaller belts does.

u/ukraine_not_weak · 1 pointr/Juicing

Get one of these. I've stored kale for close to two weeks before, works really well (takes up a good deal of space in the fridge, though).

u/splatterhead · 1 pointr/Juicing

I got an Aicook.

Handles carrots, apples, pears, whatever.
You can always chop it fine to make it easier.

u/suckpoppet · 2 pointsr/Juicing

for vegetables, I use this: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Flexible-Vegetable-Brush/dp/B00004OCL2

for the mesh screen, I use one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-Products-Heavy-Duty-baked-Top-selling/dp/B004E2RXPA

in my experience, green scrubbies work so much better for cleaning off the mesh than a brush does.

After watching the documentary, I bought/read this book to really give a full understanding of it all before buying my juicing and going all in. It also has a ton of recipes in it for juicing/healthy eating, etc.

u/knitrat · 1 pointr/Juicing

nope. The two functions are juicing with the one filter/screen and making a paste, puree or flour with the other. There is technically a pasta making nozzle, for feeding a gluten pasta dough through the corkscrew part of the juicer, but i've never tried that seems like a pain to me. Maybe others can comment on that function. I am too cheap to buy a new appliance for raw noodles, I just use a regular vegetable peeler or a julienne peeler to make them.

u/FacepalmNapalm · 5 pointsr/Juicing

You're not doing anything wrong, masticating juicers just put out a somewhat pulpy juice.

I don't think straining is imperative, but I don't like the texture of pulp in my juice so I use this strainer and it is awesome.

It takes no time at all to dump the container of collected juice through (with a little stirring if it's particularly pulpy). If I'm making a bigger batch, I strain it into a big pitcher.
