Aw, poor skitty kitty. You can try point protectors when you need to set your work down (although one of my cats thinks those are a nice texture to chew, too) so you don't have to worry about shooing him away from the ends if you set it down. Maybe having you hold a chopstick for him will help his confidence with you.
