The biggest problem with reading the comics is that the original ones were changed after Alien3 came out. They continued the story of Hicks and Newt, then later Ripley. For me, the first 2 series were the best. Along with the first Aliens vs Predator series. Oh how I wish the AvP movie followed that story line. The newer stories are decent. Defiance is pretty good. The Fire and Stone and Life and Death story lines are good tie-ins with the original and current movies also.

If you want to read the stories from the beginning, the best way is to get the Omnibuses from Amazon, a local comic shop, or Comixology if you want them digitally.

Most of them are pretty drab, but I read them anyway. Almost all of them feel like fan fiction for Aliens 1986.

I'm not a fan of the AVP movie franchise, but the very first AVP book (which was written long before the movies) was pretty excellent. It's called Aliens Vs Predator: Prey

If you like reading graphic novels, check out Aliens: Labyrinth. The novel adaptation wasn't as good.

Up to an until Hurricane Katrina I did, along with the photo novel and a few other rarities. The only original book from my ALIEN collection that survived was the Heavy Metal comic/trade paperback, which happened to be at my office that weekend (office survived unscathed).

As others have pointed out, this particular book has been reprinted a few times with different covers (I still prefer OP's shown cover) and you can still buy it (link to Amazon page).

Also FWIW, the Heavy Metal publication (ALIEN: THE ILLUSTRATED STORY) is [available still as well]; again, with a cover different from the original.

Oh I thought it was the same as the one you have. It's the 7" here. It looks pretty sweet for $30!

FTL was specifically mentioned in the original book. Have you read it? If not, I suggest you do.

From what bit of evidence do you make the assertion the Nostromo didn't have FTL?

edit: when you say it wasn't in the films, how did you come to that conclusion? because it wasn't mentioned by name? specifically? It was fairly obvious it was in the original films based on Lambert's comments about navigation and how far/long they were out. Without FTL, interstellar travel would take centuries, not months.

God I hope they make all that stuff into a proper art book some day. One of the most well-designed environments I've seen.
Edit: there already is one: http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Alien-Andy-McVittie/dp/1781169314

To be honest i'm not really sure what to say or where to start. There are alot of great comics to draw inspiration from. The most important thing is that the right authors/directors are chosen. I have no clue why the hell Paul Anderson's bad script was chosen to write/direct AvP..
Just read this and you will know what i mean. In my mind these comics are as true to the ALIENS and Predator franchises as possible.

I won't spoil it for you but you should read the second AvP book Hunter's Planet. The first book Prey is very good and seems to have influenced the grand story arc (not the details) of the Prometheus move. When you get to book 2 shit gets real.

They should have used the story from Aliens:Stronghold. I would definitely pay to the to see Jerry the cigar-smokin', machine gun totin', wise-crackin' synthetic Alien and his ass-kicking giant partner Dean.

The Aliens 30th Anniversary: Original Comic Series includes the correct/original names and the original black and white art work. A collection for Nightmare Asylum and Earth War was also released in hardback last year.

So it Nightmare Asylum basically "Book two" and Earth War is Book Three? On the Aliens wiki it says these two versions are edited with the new characters...but this omnibus is the original?

Edit: ignore me, amazon has told me all I need to know.

I don't doubt Cronenberg's hunch that Alien took some notes from his work.

But for what it's worth, the natural world did it first. Parasites affecting behavior and general body horror is old hat.

My "favorite" is the Entomophthora muscae fungus, which, after infecting and killing a female fly, make the fly's corpse irresistibly sexually attractive to male flies, who will readily try to make with the dead, infected fly rather then healthy living females. Thus the fungus is passed on.

Imagine a Cronenberg film where a fungus-ridden dead woman turns the men around on so much they have to stop everything and fuck her corpse.
