I know I’m late to this question but, I found a great yarn bag that fixes this problem. It has dividers in it and grommets on top. You place the yarns you’re using in the divided space, pull the center strand from the end of the skein through the grommet and start knitting. I used it for my double strand Afghan and I didn’t have any trouble with the yarn twisting or tangling any further. Here’s a link on Amazon for the Yarn Boss bag Yarn Boss Yarn Bag, Travel With Yarn and all Notions - Yarn Storage To Organize Multiple Projects and Keep Your Yarn Safe and Clean - Wide Grommets Stop Tangling for Best Crochet Bag or Knitting Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H4OMPUW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Bc50DbJSBP061 Hope this helps:)

Probably Knifty Knitters, which is hard to find now, but this one I got recently is a super nice quality. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GAHFHY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Came with lots of different sizes too!

I have this one and I love it, I found mine on ebay used for only 10 bucks. Just be careful not to go too ridiculously fast otherwise nice softer yarns can fly off. It works like a charm though.

Sock knitting takes a lot of time because you need to use a thin sock yarn and it's a lot of pegs, but the pattern for a basic sock is really easy. The sock loom I have comes with the basic pattern. There are also very good YouTube tutorials for anything confusing or if you learn better visually.

You can make flat panels/scarves and such on a round loom. All you do is not knit in the round, you would knit to the last peg and instead of connecting it to the first peg you would turn and knit back the opposite way.

Most of the people I know start with a set like this: https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Plastic-Knitting-11-inch-9-inch/dp/B001GAHFHY/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1541170279&sr=8-10&keywords=loom+knitting

That way you can make different size items more easily since it comes with different sized looms. I use the smallest to make socks/slippers and the largest to make panels for blankets. I started with a set like that, then bought some long rectangular looms, and also an infinity/afghan loom. I think the circle ones are a good starting point for people just getting into this. Double knitting with the rectangle looms is good for when you want something thicker and warmer, but you could also achieve that by using a thicker/chunkier yarn on a round loom.

Loomahat.com has a load of tutorials for casting on, using different stitches, fixing mistakes, and finishing a project. She also has a youtube channel with easy to follow guides.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, I've been doing loom knitting for a decade now lol.

For the body a simple cast on like doing a hat and drawstring close. The pom poms get one of these. It's super easy to use! https://www.amazon.com/Clover-Large-Pom-Maker/dp/B000WV1XGC

Thanks for answering. Is this beginner kit on amazon good for doing beanies?

Get one! Though I will add a caveat when working with acrylic yarns (especially the super smooth ones) the winders like THIS have this thing that happens where the yarn slips off the forming ball and just try to wrap around the top of the winder. It's more than a bit annoying, but if you go that way (I still love mine in spite of it) there is a way around it, once it starts slipping stop winding and give the ball/cake whatever a good squeeze and compression it down and out a bit, they you can keep gong for a while, rinse repeat until it all done.

This is my favorite: AKB KB4577 Purple and Orange Ergonomic Loom Knit Hook, 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WVWG3GL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_32D2DbDYBKZJ6 it does sound like you might be knitting a bit too tight though, as well. It took me some time to figure that out when I was learning, too.

u/BrooksSmitty · 4 pointsr/LoomKnitting

This is the best one I've found. It has patterns, techniques, and lots more.

u/tricky_business · 5 pointsr/LoomKnitting

I got this loom for tighter stitching, as the pegs are closer together by quite a bit. Otherwise as scuba21 said, doubling up your yarn is the only way I've been successful at a tighter stitch.

So, suuuuuper late response, sorry!!!!

It's technically an afghan panel pattern, from a Provo Craft pamphlet. It's really easy, you do five rows

ABAB (5x)

CBCB (5x)

CDCD (5x)

ADAD (5x)

So each color gets ten rows, but they're staggered by five with each other.

Why not get her the Martha Stewart one and maybe some nice yarn to go with it? This one is nice too. The tapestry loom is probably not what she's looking for if she's into loom knitting. Unless she is into weaving as well, it would be completely useless for her.

Authentic Knitting Board Ergonomic Knit Hook

If you haven't already using a yarn guide. Take an old pen and remove and use shell to run the yarn through. Make sure your yarn isn't feeding into the guide at a steep angle and it should stabilize your tension.

Oh and one other thing, don't worry if you find yourself hoarding yarn. We all do it. JoAnns has a sale on right now and I will be spending money tonight.

This can make a 33-36 inch long baby blanket. You have to put a peg in every other hole.

I have made 3 baby blankets using it. I make a long oval shape with it.

Ah I was a bit worried it was my loom...

Is this similar to the loom you have? 3/8” gauge loom

I’ll probably ask for a new loom for Christmas haha

The pegs are plastic on those right? If gluing them doesn't work (since the peg will lack lateral stability at the break) you could drill out the broken pegs and use epoxy to put in replacement loom pegs. They might be a different color and shape, but at least you could still use the loom and since the base of the peg would be set in epoxy and surrounded by the loom body, it would have much greater strength against shearing forces.

Alternatively, you could use drywall or self tapping metal screws to just screw into the spot where the broken pegs are. Pre-drill the hole with a bit that is just a tiny bit smaller than the screw to prevent splitting the loom plastic.
