You're an awesome parent for supporting your son's newfound hobby and making sure he can experience it in the cleanest manner possible. Hopefully we'll be able to be of some help.

> how old are most people on pony forums like this one?

The median is around college age, so mostly 21 and around. I'm towards the higher end at 24. Some of the people on this forum lean a little younger, between 16 and 21.

> there is a side of MLP fandom that isn't kid safe at all. Can you tell me: which websites are best avoided

As always, you should be present as much as possible whenever your son decides to browse the internet.

It's gonna be hard to filter, but my first and probably most helpful piece of advice is always to turn Google SafeSearch on for any computer he might use. It'll be on by default, but just make sure the checkbox is checked.

Official places will be your best bet, since your son can see all sorts of cool and curated pony stuff without potentially interacting with anyone dangerous.

Naturally, you can never go wrong with the official website (www.MyLittlePony.com), which has all sorts of fun games, coloring books, pictures, and videos. Since it's the official website, it's heavily curated by Hasbro staff, so you will be guaranteed to never see questionable content.

Netflix is definitely a safe place; every episode from seasons 1 to 4 is on there, as well as both of the movies. You could even make a dedicated "family time" where everyone watches an episode every night! It also has two documentaries, "A Brony Tale" (starring Applejack/Rainbow Dash's voice actress, Andrea Libman) and "Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony" (starring the creator, the voice of Discord, and the voice of Twilight Sparkle), both of which will do an excellent job of introducing you to the fandom and all the cool stuff the bronies have done.

When it comes to fan content, however...

It will be hard for your son to interact with other My Little Pony fans over the internet, since most internet users are adults and will have fewer filters. I would be cautious allowing him access to sites where other fans congregate.

There are lots of cool videos on YouTube, but some of them might be vulgar or extremely bizarre, and YouTube doesn't do a very good job of hiding that content. I suggest looking up Pony on YouTube with a certain degree of caution... but you will find some really cool stuff there too.

Equestria Daily (http://www.equestriadaily.com) is a great place to find out news regarding the fandom and the show. It does not ever post mature content at all, but its comments sections are frequented by fans. As long as you keep him out of the comments section

Derpibooru (http://www.derpibooru.org) is a site that shares hundreds of thousands of MLP pictures and art made by fans. It has filters that you can set up so that your son never gets exposed to explicit content, including a TV-Y mode. These filters are on by default, so you can peruse it if you want to look at cool pictures with your son. I'd advise against letting him browse alone, however, since they're easy to turn off.

Fimfiction (http://www.fimfiction.net) is a site for fans to write and post fanfiction. It has a mature toggle that hides mature content, but unfortunately it's very easy to turn off. It'll best be browsed with parental supervision, or potentially not at all until your son is a teenager (which means he might not even be a fan of the show anymore by then).

If you want to try and keep your son off the internet...

The official comics are fantastic from both a story and art perspective, and they will keep your son (and you and your husband too!) very entertained.

There are also chapter books that will help your son learn to read. Many are offered at various reading levels, so you can gradually wean your son on bigger and more complex books over time.

There's also an official My Little Pony game for Android, iPhone/iPod/iPad, and Windows Phone, and all sorts of official audiobooks that your son can read along with as well. Since they offer no social features, there's no possible way for your son to interact with anyone dangerous.

Hopefully that's a good enough summary! If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know! Good luck, and have fun ponying-out with your son!

The brushable pony toys are fantastic. You can find a good selection at any superstore (Target, Wal-Mart, etc). I suggest Target- it's got more officially licensed Hasbro stuff, with some things that can only be found there. They've also got pony blankets and stuffed toys there.

There's a few different types of pony toys. You've got the blindbags- little, hard plastic figurines that often come in bags where you can't tell what you're getting. Great for a surprise, sort of like a pony lottery.
There are larger hard plastic toys, usually in a set. They're fun and well-made, great for playtime. A lot easier to manage than the brushables... pony hair can get crazy at times.
The ones with brushable hair probably have the most potential, and they're what I would recommend. Even the smaller, one-pony ones (cost about $5 US) come with an accessory or pet, so they provide a little more value than just the toy. There are a bunch of guides online on styling doll hair, with a few pony-specific ones for making the hair accurate to the show. Styling definitely takes adult supervision, but it makes a nice activity for if/when she's old enough to have the attention span.

It sucks that you don't get the show... the new show's fantastic, for kids as well as adult. One of those awesome shows that appeals to every age so parents don't feel themselves losing braincells as they watch, hehe. I believe the show's on Netflix, if you have it or could get it, and Season One has a DVD coming out in December. Might make a good Christmas present.

You definitely came to the right place to ask. People can say what they will about bronies and other adult fans, but when it comes down to it we're just fans of the new show. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to drop on by and ask! We're a pretty friendly bunch, especially when it involves helping out a fellow pony fan like your daughter.

If some were not so expensive, I'd recommend a plushie. The more durable ones make for great stuffed toys for children to play with.

As others have said, the DVD would be nice. It is cheap and well worth the price (in my opinion of course :D ) The DVD can be bought from Amazon.

Also, if you like reading to her, I'd get the comics. This is something I did for my nephews and nieces. They enjoyed being read to from books and comics, but the MLP would suit your child more. Hopefully, that is.
The comics are not out yet, but they may be by the time her birthday comes around. You can pre-order them here.

I hope this helps!

4DE is the 4th Dimension Entertainment Twilight. She's the first plush I bought. BaBW is Build a Bear Workshop. She looks a bit strange but she's super soft and I got her on the recommendation of a friend who loves his BaBW Fluttershy.

u/fallenpenguin · 1 pointr/MLPLounge

Well, not all at once, but there are paperbacks collecting the individual comics:

u/durpyDash · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

Maybe something like the one I have now. Although I want one without clicky keys for work. Honestly the best computer investment I've made in about 5 years. It's study, comfortable, not gaudy...

...and all class!

I may overly obsessed with keyboards.

Pay attention and the show (also books and comics) have lots of dark lore hints, mostly in the background and between the lines.

That said nothing in the show references "a previous race", the cities being horse puns is for the sake of puns in the show. A planet being called earth is neither here or there. Since Earth is an old Greek word for dirt, to put it simply. MLP is heavy on historical and ancient design and lore. You could argue they should have a different name. But then it being in a human language and them calling dirt... dirt makes it moot. Earth is Earth since it is dirt.

That said, a little drawing in the two little Cakes room, at some point shows small drawings of "human figures" but that could mean so many things from artists in-jokes to fantasy (like our Unicorns), or even other bi-ped races on the planet.

If your likin lore, the comics are cool if not high octane that "stretches believability but doesn't really break canon on almost all plots (some might break on a personal level or much later in the show some might not "fit") but adds lots of extra story.
A more serious and closer to the show type stories are the G.M. Berrow books, they are kid looking on the cover but fairly serious and show canon friendly in actual reading. She also did 3 official Daring Do books that are also very good made by her under the A. K. Yearling penname: https://www.amazon.com/Little-Pony-Adventure-Collection-Three-Book/dp/0316406120/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542945168&sr=8-1&keywords=daring+do

Amazon also has the 3 separate books for a little cheaper then the box set.

Aww. Listen when you get to some speakers, though there are better ELO songs out there.

If you ever need to purchase a good pair of portable headphones, get these. Sometimes they go on sale. They have some really excellent sound quality.

I saw Deadpool with my mom and me. That's technically one of the families I belong to, parents being divorced and all.

I loved it, but it wasn't the absolute best. Pretty far up there though.

I don't know any writers.

Nice try, police!

My favorite color is green, but I love to wear blue.

My favorite gun is a finger gun. I can take it anywhere and it's not deadly!

Don't really know...

I had an instant breakfast drink (basically chocolate milk with vitamins and stuff added)

I think the most recent is "How to remove clothes in Photoshop". It's not as perverted as it sounds, I wanted to get rid of the suspenders someone was wearing. They had a T-shirt clearly visible underneath, but I couldn't just retake the photo.

Murder them all! A dead employee cannot tell secrets.

Unicorns

Assembly Language for x86 Processors (7th Edition)

u/DepartmentStoreSpook · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

You could always buy the horse mask and still have enough for something else on the list. Of course I like all the shirts, and the shoes are awesome, so it all comes down to personal preference.

u/lukjad007 · 5 pointsr/MLPLounge

I bought this book a while back. I didn't like it because of the reasons I posted in my review, but it is a decent sized book and sounds like something you could use.

$2+shipping. Does that sound fair? I'll ship by Canada Post, with or without tracking.

u/selv · 3 pointsr/MLPLounge

Mechanical keyboard guide. The Unicomp customizer is by far the most popular new mechanical keyboard. It's identical to the original IBM model M which you can buy on ebay. Both of these use a buckling spring keyswitch.

I prefer cherry brown switches and use a filco majestouch and kinesis contoured.

u/UltraMew · 1 pointr/MLPLounge

Order one online, maybe? The 4DE ones are amazing quality.

u/TimidTremors · 4 pointsr/MLPLounge

It's a Logitech G230 headset. I used to have a pair. They're excellent for the price, especially with the mic it has on it.

u/GunStinger · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

Well, yeah, that's the US page. For Europe, price conversion of hardware for the most part just consists of replacing the $ with either a € or £. As demonstrated here. Importing from the US incurs customs fees and taxes, which negates any savings you may get. Anyway, it's still less than I paid for mine (€66 / £52 / $82), and that was the cheapest I could get in my country...

u/fluttersalute · 1 pointr/MLPLounge

Looks like it comes out on the 6th, at least on Amazon. That's actually closer than I thought!

u/Not_a_blimp · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

You can find them on Amazon!

The Promise: Part one, Part two, Part three, Complete

Details the aftermath of the war.

The Search: Part one, Part two, Part three, Complete

Zuko searches for his mother.

A new comic called The Rift is coming out soon that's about Aang trying to protect sacred airbender lands or something. I'm not completely sure.

Dessolation of Archie

Koss PortaPros

Twitch

iPad Mini

Don't be put off by the headphone price, the sound quality is better than my sisters $130 Sennheiser headphones. Bigger frequency range.

I don't recommend the iPad Mini though. Screen flexes and half a gig of ram.

u/Dash-o-Salt · 3 pointsr/MLPLounge

You can totes get the 4DE Twilight Sparkle on Amazon, but they're almost out!

I already ordered mine. :D

u/mylittleplaceholder · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

The Omnibus collections are a good compromise. I have the digital ones but have gotten the paper ones, too.

u/LukeTheGeek · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

It's a 16 inch, so pretty big. But I'm having a bit of buyer's remorse, because for $25 it's not very huggable and I found some nice options on Amazon. I ordered this Twilight and I'm considering just returning this RD. I don't necessarily need it.

u/whiterun_garda · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

My Trixie plushy, my Game of Thrones goat horn cup and the MLP:FiM Omnibus comic, volume 1.

Edit: also my hand-made Trixie blanket, but that's too much effort to get a proper picture of it.

u/Cobalt_Blaze · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

I have this and I love it. My ears don't hurt after 15 minutes of wearing, and no horrible pain when taking it off.

u/The6P4C · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

It's on the US Amazon, but aren't on Aussie Amazon. Don't think US Amazon ships to 'straya, so that's out of the question.

Kinda sad, really :(
