Something like this works fairly well. It helps if you have a buddy to clean up with a rake and hand remove some it a hand saw, loppers, etc. You can switch up jobs when you get tired.

I used them growing up in KY to clear fence rows. We called them weed hooks but it looks like there is a different tool with that name, I had no idea I was using the same tool that Carl made famous so many years ago.
