Here is the rail I use. It's very easy to install. You get a punch to remove the pin that holds in the rear sight and knock it out. The punch from an AK cleaning kit fits perfectly. Take off the sight and slide the leaf spring out. It just slide forward and out. Then line up the hole on the bottom of the rail with the hole left by the pin and put in the screws. Then use the included hex screws to balance it out and set the screws. Everything necessary is included except the punch which is easily acquired anyway. And the hex screws fit nicely in the mosin cleaning kit as well as the punch.

This is the sight I use. Very nice red dot and pretty affordable. My friend has one on his .22 and it's great.

And I'm looking to get these for the sight soon. 37.7mm fits the tasco red dot perfectly.

Unfortunately I have not fired my mosin since the installation of either of these parts as I just got them last week so hopefully the hold up well to how hard the mosin kicks.

I would recommend this scope mount or any 3/8 dovetail mounts and this scope for a no drilling option. ATI and Rock Solid make nice mounts for normal scopes but require drilling and changing the bold handle. There are other cheaper Pistol/Long Eye Relief scopes but I'm very impressed with the quality of the leatherwood.

Really pleased with this mount. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009ZKHD3S/ref=pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

Solid as a rock and mounts well to the dovetail. I left my rear pin in and filed a little off of the mount so that the pin acts as a stop bar. If I cared a little more about looks I'd have drilled holes instead. But honestly it doesn't need more than the included stopper as long as you drill a small impression for the pin. Also Pleased with this scope if you are looking for that too. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FH6M00/ref=pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

Yeah...a Lee press is like $30. https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Reloading-Press-Md-90045/dp/B002SF4X5I/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1504265516&sr=1-1&keywords=lee+reloading+press
Lee RGB Dies are $20. You'll save a lot of headaches.

Case trimming......If you really want to do it the ghetto way, you can use a piece of sandpaper, laying it flat on a table and rubbing the case mouth in a consistent manner on the sandpaper. Alternately you can use a coutersink bit from Home depot and just hog off the excess brass with a hand drill. Trim die is probably your next cheapest option.

Digital scale like this is alright....just check it with a known value each time you use it. Use a bullet or a pellet gun pellet or something. If you're using a middle burn rate powder like IMR4064 or Tac or something...you have to be pretty far off...by probably ten grains... before it gets dangerous if you're going for a middle of the road charge. Consistency is more important for accuracy.

Simple ram type primer....or just use the priming function of the lee loader you already have....

And then a set of calipers to check your length

I love that look, it's exactly what i was going for.
Butt pad doesn't absorb much recoil but is A LOT better than the steel plate and makes the stock long enough to hold comfortably. It was originally made for small russian farmers with shorter arms.

its available on amazon, i have a hard copy version but i can take and send you photos if needed. came with my '44 izhvesk pu sniper. thr sniper version has all the regular mosin nagant stuff in it, plus lots of weird cool historical stuff in it, like targeting paratroopers, ranging, estimating speed, and holdover for bombers and fighter planes (not kidding about that), and info on using other equipment like an issued periscope and standards for qualifying probpems with the pu sniper rifle.

its pretty damn cool.

u/JakesGunReviews · 2 pointsr/MosinNagant

Not a problem. It sounds a little confusing how I paraphrased it, I'm sure, but the rifle's manual itself goes pretty in-depth with it.

You can order one here: http://www.amazon.com/Official-Soviet-Mosin-Nagant-Rifle-Manual/dp/158160081X

The one I have is the sniper rifle manual (M91/30 PU), but the "regular" manual here goes over the carbines, too. I should definitely pick up a copy of this one sometime, too.

u/GeneUnit90 · 1 pointr/MosinNagant

I have the field gauge from this set. It's pretty easy to use since you don't need to take out the extractor.

Liberytreecollectors.com has some M91 bayonets in stock. I'm going to try to get one later once I start getting paid. They're not cheap though. You can also get an M91 cleaning rod from them. I'm guessing you already know all of this though. Good luck with the sling, that might be hard to find.

Just an FYI, It does not come with a sling like it says it does. It comes with a scope mount for some reason lol

u/blueberrysteven · 3 pointsr/MosinNagant

I have heard this bad boy works well.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000W8FOME?pc_redir=1408078262&robot_redir=1

Nice because you don't have to alter the rifle to use it, just slip it on over the butt plate. I think pachmayr make something similar, but I don't know if one is better than the other.

u/joe_canadian · 1 pointr/MosinNagant

With headspace gauges, like these, or you can ask a gunsmith to do it for you, but it may cost more than the gauges themselves.

Brownell's is a good primer on how to use them.

M91/30 rifles and M38/M44 carbines in 1941-1945, accessories and devices (Model 1891/1930 rifle) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PBQD932/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VvkzDbZZT24YW

Best book in English on the Mosin Nagant ever written

u/Cohiba2 · 1 pointr/MosinNagant

Depends if were talking just any normal gun not surplus ammo, I typically put bit of oil down the barrel and run a bore snake through it repeatedly. Works well on a mosin shooting non corrosive.

http://www.amazon.com/Hoppes-24011-BoreSnake-Rifle-Cleaner/dp/B0000C50K3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382451527&sr=8-1&keywords=bore+snake

As for size a Mosin is 7.62 MM or .297 so a .30-30 or for a .308 round will work. Since 7mm .280 - .270 tend to be to small. Need to make sure any gun powder is removed from the breech, and bolt face using bit of hoppes or oil and a brush, I use a old tooth brush. Then Once a year she gets the strip down deep clean.

Now for corrosive ammo that stuffs a bit more nasty, windex or lots of hoppes, in the reciever, strip the bolt, again cleaned well with windex, hoppes, water or anything to help neutralize the primer corrosive salts. Use my bore brush to help knock any loose powder and primer salts out. Once I think its fairly clean can see down the barrel and no powder residue and my nice rifling, time to oil that girl up. Patches with oil through the bore, rub oil into the breech, bolt, reassemble the bolt and then the yearly tear down regardless of if I've shot corrosive or non. If its going to say sit in the gun safe for extended period of time like winter I might leave a heaver coat of oil on it.

I'm planning on getting this scope mount for my mosin. It replaces the rear sight leaf and mounts directly onto the 3/8" dovetail and locks down with screws. Everything I've read about it seems pretty solid and holds a zero just fine.

u/BioChemistryStudent · 2 pointsr/MosinNagant

If you don't mind, I'd actually advise picking up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-RTX-B-3-Speed-Rotary/dp/B000MUSLCC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416532678&sr=8-1&keywords=Black+and+Decker+dremel

The motor is higher quality and higher amps than a Dremel, so it lasts longer, and wont burn it's self out if you start using it. Uses all the dremel accessories too! :)

u/hkp2000 · 4 pointsr/MosinNagant

If you're worried about the bolt, and want to make extra sure it's within tolerances, you could always get one of these. The explanation on how to use the gauges is found here - please go through the tread before forking your $$$. As the users on gunboards mentioned, most of the times the field gauge is just enough (can be purchased separately).

u/Foobelepo · 1 pointr/MosinNagant

I have an ATI mosin Nagant stock, I'm pretty sure they have only one style but this is what it is http://www.amazon.com/ATI-Mosin-Nagant-7-62x54R-Monte/dp/B000HOT2SK

u/MP_ROB_31B · 2 pointsr/MosinNagant

Up under the rear sight there is a small dovetail. It took some effort because the rust and cosmoline had the sight glued to the gun. A little heat helps. I bought these mounts on Amazon: Leapers Accushot 1-Pc Mount, Dovetail, for 1" Rings https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BR4TJY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_HeaLxb4MD9V6P
And the mount slip right on. It's solid milled aluminium and really sturdy. I haven't lost zero yet a month later.

u/Supermoves3000 · 3 pointsr/MosinNagant

> is that a masen 10/22 butt pad spacer?

It looks like this Aim Sports model.

u/DrHugsyMcFur · 1 pointr/MosinNagant

I use this mount, works fine so far.

And this scope

Hardest part of mounting/zeroing was getting the stock rear sight off.

u/dmccauley · 4 pointsr/MosinNagant

I got this one off of amazon.
It does add a little bit of length but not noticeably because it replaces the metal plate.

u/hacksauce · 1 pointr/MosinNagant

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00162NUTE/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is what I have. I caught it on a nail or something and it tore - so the fabric isn't super sturdy, but it was cheap so I'm not complaining.

u/codewolf · 3 pointsr/MosinNagant

Here's the one I bought. Cheap, fits the rifle, works for the range.

u/Frostiken · 28 pointsr/MosinNagant
  1. Cap the end of the barrel. I ate a bunch of cheese and made a wax cap. Bonus, you get to eat cheese for this step.

  2. Pour a bunch of Kroil in the breech. Do this outside in case the wax cap doesn't hold.

  3. Let it soak for 24 hours.

  4. Uncap it, pour that foul shit out, go to town with a bore brush. Scrub and scrub and scrub some more.

  5. Rifle is fine. Shoot any remaining corrosion out.
u/B_Huij · 13 pointsr/MosinNagant

Wear some layers and hold it tight to the meaty part of your shoulder (not your collarbone), and it's not bad at all.

If you are wearing thin clothes and/or holding the stock in the wrong spot and/or holding it loosely because you're anticipating the recoil, you're going to have a bad time.

Also, if it's still a bit much, this made a significant difference for me:

> 1 How many of you checked the head space before you fired your gun? I've seen a few message boards where people claim you will die if you don't and other say not to worry about it. If you did check it did you buy head space gauges or take it to a gunsmith?

I checked mine using this So far no issues. If you are still worried take it to your local gunsmith.

> 2 I have a 1891/30 made in the Tula armory in 1934 and then Arsenal refinished. From what I can tell there is little to no cosmoline in it. Do I still have to go through the process of breaking it down scrubbing the hell out of everything?

I would if it were mine - that craps gets everywhere in every nook and cranny

> 3 How many of you use surplus ammo? Is there any reason that I should stay away from using it? I understand it is corrosive and will have to thoroughly clean the gun immediately after using it.

Ammo is fine I have had 2 misfires out of approx. 400 rounds. Most gun rages around here (SoCal) don't seem to like the steel core ammo so I usually shoot out in the desert, which suits me fine.

As for cleaning after firing corrosive ammo. I used this guys guide No issues as yet.

Have fun with your commie rifle, odds are you'll love shooting the damn thing.

Edit: I still suck at formatting
