Music exists to be made and that's all there is to it.
You missed 2-8 years of constant exposure, performance opportunities and lots of cool classes, but if music is something you love just do it as much as you can. Ear training, sight singing, transcription, these are very important tools but it takes the repeated application of them to make you "better." I have a BM, it was 4.5 years of immersion. I can tell you that most of the things I "learned" I could point out to you in a few minutes each. Lots of little tricks and tips, neat combinations and things like that. Figuring out how to really apply them is what's so difficult.
If you want a good introduction to harmony and tonality, Tonal Harmony is very thorough.
Make what you want. Fuck everybody who says you can't.
Edit: phrasing
Hey guys. I am a DJ and have been through my fair share of headphones for professional and personal use. Brands to watch out for are Pioneer, Sennheiser, Shure, Ultimate Ears. Brands to run from (in my experience) are Audio Technica, Yamaha, Sony (mainly on their lower end), weird brands like Coby and JVC, and for godsakes be weary of skullcandy; they may look cool but they are made from exceptionally cheap materials that result in poor build and sound quality.
Finally, it depends what you are looking for: in-ear, cans(over ear or open air), noise canceling etc.
In-Ear:
1-- Sennheiser CX200

3-- Shure E2c
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-E2c-Sound-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B0000CE1UO
Open-air:
1-- Koss PortaPros (dorky but amazing sound for $)
http://www.amazon.com/Koss-PortaPro-Headphones-with-Case/dp/B00001P4ZH
2-- Sennheiser PX100
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PX-100-Collapsible-Headphones/dp/B000089GN3
3-- Grado SR60 -- 80 dollars but well worth it -- my favorite but read up on these before you buy
http://www.amazon.com/Grado-60-SR-60-Padded-Headphones/dp/B0006DPMU4
Over-ear:
1- Sennheiser HD-497

hope that helps :)
edited for readability. wtf reddit
I actually just ordered some headphones, and decided to go with these. Haven't gotten them yet, but always hear good things about them.
I also own a pair of these Bose ones, which I was given as a gift. The sound and comfort is great, but they're constructed poorly, and the earphones can break off the frame. Nothing that some super glue couldn't fix, though... but still, not worth the price.

Here you go! This is the full IKSSE3 collection. I don't know if there are any e-book versions out there but this is what I used. It really is a great read, the artwork is amazing. SSTB is also available in the same format.
Johnny was pretty gifted. He had a great mind. I strongly recommend his autobiography
Here's a sample of what's on the Led Zeppelin DVD.

The Royal Albert Hall footage is my favorite concert of all time. The DVD also includes Madison Square Garden which is mostly IV and Houses, and Earls Court which is an acoustic set.

Audio wise, look up the album How the West Was Won. Contains most of the songs on the DVD and is considered its companion piece.
Interesting (except for the cheeseball vocals).
But what does it matter?
This is what he'll be remembered for:

The McDonald's of Reggae music? Ubiquitous, fills-a-hole, but hardly satisfying?
(Interestingly, there are twenty 5-star reviews. Perhaps more of a religion than entertainment ...)
need to know what you're plugging the headphones into. if it's an ipod, really no need to get any better than these fantastic Sennheiser HD 202's. Noise-isolating enough for a NYC subway ride (not that it's always a good idea, mind you...) I've abused my pair for over 2 years now and they really are unbreakable, plus the sound quality is great for $20...
No, but there's a great version on the Alison Krauss + Union Station Live album. Here's a similar (if not the same) version.
You could listen the songs from the soundtrack of Good Morning Vietman.
Another songs that makes me feel like I want to ride my bike are:
We Jam Econo is truly awesome.
I would add:
afro punk
american hardcore
D.O.A. A Rite of Passage
Kill Your Idols
The Real Frank Zappa Book
Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs
No One Here Gets Out Alive
X: The Unheard Music
And, for fun:
Heavy Metal Parking Lot - I actually went to high school with some of the kids interviewed here.
A bit more than your price target, at $99, are the Shure ec2 in ear headphones. I've had a pair for several years, and they do a good job of ambient sound attenuation. This is the only pair of in-ears I've ever owned, so the only one I can recommend.
I love the The Philadelphia Experiment
How Music Works by John Powell. It is a good breakdown of many elements of music and how we hear sounds and read notation. Other than the, look on Amazon for a used music theory textbook and go from there.
I used this on in college classes.
Another decent theory book.
Digable Planets - Reaching
Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride 2: The Pharcyde
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control
Soundbombing V.2
Hieroglyphics - Third Eye Vision
Del The Funky Homosapien - Both Sides of the Brain

The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
Weezer - Blue Album. Perfect in every way.

According to The Wu Tang Manual RZA explains that people get that line wrong a lot, but that it is indeed "had second hands" as in second hand clothes.
A really good read on the subject.Edit: Someone else already linked to this book.
It's just called Led Zeppelin..HtWWW was a separate audio only release.

Both are sweet... :)
This book is well worth a read: http://www.amazon.com/Rip-Up-Start-Again-1978-1984/dp/0143036726/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1451938909&sr=1-1&keywords=rip+it+up+and+start+again
No order;
Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights (easily my favorite female vocalist), Zodiak - Sermons, Tool - Lateralus, Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, and Deftones - White Pony.
I could keep going though.
Please.
Frank Zappa 'Call Any Vegetable.' Just Another Band from LA
Radiohead 'Reckoner' In Rainbows
Bob Marley 'Three Little Birds' Legend Bob Marley
If you like Shpongle, also check out O.T.T and Hallucinogen In Dub. Also research Raja Ram for he is the godfather of this movement.
Mostly from this book.
Genuinely one of the most mind blowing books I have ever read. It's been years since I read it though, and someone has pinched my copy so I'm sorry if I can't get you any actual quotes.
Also this book. I get the two mixed up because I read them both in the same short period of time, so information could be from either of them. Both highly recommended.
Source
During the commentary, director Adrien Maben, talked about the windy conditions and needing to re-record the vocals. The wind is quite evident in Echoes. There's no way the vocals would be clear. Also, i believe, Adrien Maben shot the footage of the band making DSOTM during this time.
Rent the video!
from the almost infinite list of possible recommendations, i just mention one now:
Ott - Hallucinogen in dub
This one? http://www.amazon.com/Alison-Krauss-Union-Station-Live/dp/B00006LLLN
The Philadelphia Experiment by The Philadelphia Experiment. Man can they groove.
http://www.amazon.com/Soundbombing-Vol-2-Various-Artists/dp/B00000IIZ1
Amazon has it, but I'm assuming that's not what you meant.
Amazon seems to have it.
Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd
Pick up the Good Morning Vietnam Soundtrack - it has this track a bunch of others from the same era.
It's this book: Field, Andy (2009). Discovering Statistics Using SPSS, 3rd edition. London: Sage.

I knew what book this was the moment I read this headline. (To those asking: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Discovering-Statistics-Introducing-Statistical-Methods/dp/1847879071/ref=pd_sim_b_2) This is the greatest stats book ever: I failed Stats in my second year, went to my professor, who wouldn't help me out. I picked up this book in desperation, read it, instantly went "WOW." I will permanently have Fugazi stuck in my head now though. Also: I aced my stats text. The moment a lower year friend of mine complained about the stats lecturer, I gave him my copy. Never went to a class again, passed his test.
