Nice! I too hate the mounts for the air dock. I bought all three and they all suck equally bad in my car. The CD mount came close but my CD slot is rounded and the mount is flat so can't get it fully in and supported. My plan is to do exactly this but just FYI you can get a plate for that proclip that will give you the 17mm (I believe) mounting ball that fits the dock. It's a pretty common size apparently as several GPS units use it.

Also for Bluetooth I've tried a some that just never work all that great. My Tunelink had to be re-paired to my phone constantly, like daily or more. My cars Bluetooth for calling is absolutely terrible as well. I recently got this thing on Amazon last week and it works like a charm. Even has a wired remote you mount with a mic on it, a multifunction button and also previous and next track buttons.

here's what I've been happily using & recommend:

  • this car charger. It will fully charge your phone while using navi with the screen-on at all times, if the charging cable is plugged in the NA-marked port and no other device is being charged at the same time. I've been wanting to experiment with a charging-only cable such as this one to see if it would help with better/faster charging and the possibility of charging a second device at the same time.

  • kenu airframe car mount. very simple, small, well-made, and works pretty much universally on all types of air vents. i frequently rent a variety of cars and have yet to stumble upon a model where the kenu wouldn't mount properly. holds the phone perfectly and takes a couple of seconds to mount.

as far as actual navi, GMaps has been unreliable for me during the last couple of roadtrips. I only used it because I knew I had a backup (standalone navi). it would crash silently and I'd have to pull over, and set it up again (and hope there is data/coverage because if there isn't, i'm SOL). this happened at least 4 times during a 6-7 hour drive. for this reason, have either a standalone navi backup, or another app that you can rely on, such as nav free or CoPilot, both of which i've heard good things about.

    have fun!

Now I know this isn't the LG one! BUT... I actually just bought this - The Nillkin Fruit Series. It could be one of the best cases I've ever owned. It's light yet very durable. The cover feels very premium and rigid. The actual casing part is also very nice as well. It's an awesome case, I just find I'm not much a fan of flip cases. It does wake/lock the phone too which is nice. I highly recommend it, especially at the price point.

I wrecked the headphone jack on my Nexus 5 and decided I would give DIY repair a try. It turns out that working on these phones is not terribly difficult.

Here's a $60-ish kit on Amazon with new screen and tools for the job: http://www.amazon.com/Display-Screen-Digitizer-Assembly-Google/dp/B00HPRZPHO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416507058&sr=8-2&keywords=nexus+5+screen

And a YT video on how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbcPQ6JKoJA (the vid is 15 mins long, so worst case you might spend 30 minutes on a DIY).

If you're already considering a new phone but liked your 5 for one reason or another you might want to give this a shot first. I was surprised at how easy it was to work on. Worst case scenario you're out $60 and 30 minutes of your time, but best case you keep the phone you already paid for.

Quick Edit: Looking further at the link I placed to the Amazon kit the reviews are pretty bad. Do some research and consider buying the screen and tools separate. When I did my repair I bought this toolkit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CLO7Q2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a $2 headphone jack replacement. Lots places refer to the Nexus 5 as the LG D820 as well, so you can search by that on AliBaba or eBay.

u/erikivy · 1 pointr/Nexus5

Pretty sure it's not a problem to do what you are asking, although I use a car kit for both streaming and phone calls. My wife and I both have this unit in our cars

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009NLTW60/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and love it. The sound quality is really good (to our ears, anyway) and it's very reasonably priced. Check out the reviews.

This Nilkin, very basic but it's actual leather and pretty solid; worth a try for ten bucks. There is no closure flap, which I prefer. Autowake works well for the N5.

I will caution readers that this coverbot, also ten bucks and also pretty well made, does NOT have an autowake magnet. The AMZ description is wrong. The case was okay otherwise and note it does have a latching flap.

there's a bunch of amazon and such like this that all seem to be rebrands of the same OEM unit.

i mostly came here though, to say don't get the bezalel ark. holy crap, what a hunk of junk. that was the first one of these i saw, and i watched a friend of a friend spend like 20 minutes trying to get his phone to actually start charging with the thing, then it drained pathetically quickly.

note that these are consistently REALLY overpriced. Like, $50+ for a <5000mAh pack, when you could get a new trent or a xiaomi or something 10kmAh or more for ~$20. How much is wireless charging worth to you?

ebay and amazon have plenty, though. just searching "qi wireless battery bank" or "battery pack" or whatever worked.

u/R3Lax1 · 1 pointr/Nexus5

Most likely the usb port. Have you done anything, say "odd" with it? These things fail actually pretty often. Luckily, you can easily replace it. To be sure though, I'd try to connect it to a pc and copy a large file to the phone, say 500 mb and see how's the speed.

Tudia Wav-Hybrid

Works great, it's been through a few pretty worrisome drops and been fine.

u/jasparaguscook · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I bought a new charging port from amazon for $15 (shipped) and was able to replace it myself from a youtube video over the course of ~15 minutes. It's super easy. Just go slowly and follow the instructions.

Here's the video guide I followed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqCEXEmcj4Y

and here's the port I bought:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PGMP9E4/

Perhaps unsurprisingly, that is not a "genuine OEM" one, but it worked just fine.

u/tjk911 · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

I'm typically super careful with my phone, so I just wanted a scratch-protection minimal case to avoid additional bulk.

I got the BearMotion "sandpaper" case. They go by various names, you can get them on eBay for $2 or so.

It adds enough of a lip to the front so that you can put it face down without letting your screen come in contact with the surface, and there's enough thickness in the back to protect your camera from contact.

http://www.amazon.com/Bear-Motion-Premium-Cover-Google/dp/B00G8WCYN0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395678447&sr=8-1&keywords=bear+motion+nexus+5

u/nilleo · 1 pointr/Nexus5

The magnetic mount that comes with this one holds an N5 quite well. It holds mine much better without a case, but it still manages to hold it even with my Ringke slim case on.

The little magnetic disc has a ball style mount receptacle like some GPS mounts so you can remove it and use it with another mount style that doesn't take up your CD slot.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Nexus5

This is better the case is too big for me to carry around. I just either use the battery pack it came with or this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CTK762E, which has more capacity anyway. Plus it can be sandwiched with the phone much better than the externel battery that comes with the zero lemon case

u/buffayolo · 1 pointr/Nexus5

My current case is
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00G9FXCKK?cache=3d44875bdaf4f3f465db4347eb096303&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1407710629&sr=8-3#ref=mp_s_a_1_3
I think it looks good and it has saved my phone on at least 2 occasions after only having it for 1 month

u/MorphineBear · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

i-Blason Google Nexus 5 Smart Phone by LG Prime Series Dual Layer Holster Case with Kickstand and Locking Belt Swivel Clip (Black).

It's a rubber case on your phone, then another hard frame over that. It's really nice and has a stand and clip.

u/_SerialShitter · 6 pointsr/Nexus5

I have this one, and it works great for music. I don't talk on the phone much, so I haven't bothered setting it up to take calls.

u/socioteq · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

Do you have a CD player? I mean, do you have something that you can put this:http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Universal-Phones-Devices/dp/B004G1L52Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398258702&sr=8-1&keywords=cd+slot+mount on?

If you get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Lerway-Wireless-Power-Charger-Lumia920/dp/B00E9MUNWU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1398258756&sr=8-3&keywords=qi+charger and break it open/glue the guts to the yellow part of the slot mount, you have a pretty sweet QI charger/mount. It seems there arent many options for this, but this worked well for me. I'll try and take some photos today of what I did.

u/PoisonBerry · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

I've been using this one for about two months now. It's pretty good since it doesn't add that much bulk. It has a magnet on the cover that turns the screen on and off when you open and close the cover. The shell itself is pretty solid and protects the phone from wear. It is also thick enough to make wireless charging finicky. If you have it at just the right spot, it will charge fine but don't move it or it will stop charging. The material for the cover is good and doesn't scratch the screen nor does it leave any residue. I'm just not confident it will last for too long since it uses it as a "hinge". My guess is it would last maybe 6 months with my use. At that time, it would probably falling apart. I could be wrong, though.

Over all, I like it so far. $10 or so is also cheap in my opinion when compared to others.

u/deftdrummer · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I use the Pthink ultra-thin .3mm protector off Amazon. I love the feel and everything was cut precisely. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HTK5U9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/victorofthepeople · 1 pointr/Nexus5

This one has an internal battery pack which is nice if you need some power on the go: http://www.amazon.com/PowerBot-Wireless-Charging-PowerSwitch-Smartphones/dp/B00F6SQ7IK/

Worked fine with my Spigen slim armor, although I'm naked now.

u/ignorancepower · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I spent $10 on a case and it's probably saved my $250 in potential repairs. That's not a bad ROI.

I picked up this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G9FXCKK/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1

u/KovaaK · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

What magnetic car mount do you have?

I am using this now, and I love that it isn't using the stupid suction cup that inevitably falls down. Unfortunately, it's not a charging mount.

u/nvers · 1 pointr/Nexus5

Been using an iBlason since I got it. Never dropped so I can't say how effective it is. Has a raised rubber lip around the edges which makes reaching the edge of the screen difficult at times but it's easy to grip I can set it face down on a surface and not have it slide around.

u/wag3slav3 · 1 pointr/Nexus5

How about this ziploc bag with double zip and a buckle. Seems a bit better than just a freezer bag.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AW2QT8I

u/chanoelmano · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I have this case in white. I think they have all the Nexus colors. The case is lightweight and the waking feature works great. The adhesive on the back wears after a few months but it is cheap enough to replace.

u/Fred_Blicko · 1 pointr/Nexus5

Depends on what kind of case you prefer.

I like a bumper case that sits around the outside of the phone

http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Borderline-Gray-Manufacturer-Warranty/dp/B00FNWM2GU

u/therhyno · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I was specifically talking about the product linked at the top comments:
link. This battery pack appears to come with a wire attached, which you must then use adapters to connect to whatever phone. Upon second look, it also includes a USB out, which you are suggesting use of.

I still wonder if there could be a product that could do both--wireless and wired. A wireless charger with a USB out so if you did carry the battery in your pocket, purse, briefcase, backpack etc. you could quickly slip it in and know that it's charging during your commute.

u/ar0nic · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I am seconding this. I use it with a nillken glass protector and I have had no issues with it. I wish I would of paid 9 bux instead of 25 locally.

Note: a hundred different companies make this exact case.

http://www.amazon.com/i-Blason-Google-Holster-Kickstand-Locking/dp/B00FORK3SI/ref=sr_1_22/178-0356590-3367061?ie=UTF8&qid=1405638585&sr=8-22&keywords=nexus+5+case

u/gerusz · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

I'm using this Shocksock armband.

Not ridiculously expensive, fits snugly plus it's an extra reflexive piece.

u/manormortal · 1 pointr/Nexus5

Don't think you'd go wrong with a [Tudia Wav Hybrid case] (http://www.amazon.com/TUDIA-WAV-HYBRID-Material-Protective-Bumper/dp/B00G9FXCJG/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1398513739&sr=1-1&keywords=nexus+5+tudia)

The grips make it easier to hold the phone, it's sturdy so I'm not too worried about dropping the phone and you don't have to put any extra effort in pushing the volume or power buttons due to the case.

u/Daerkannon · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PGMP9E4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

That's the part we used. As you can see it's a bit more than just the charging port, but it all comes as one unit.

u/Hentai_Bowtie · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

Nillkin flip case. Slim, and the sleep/wake up is convenient.

u/ErraticDragon · 3 pointsr/Nexus5

Aside from software, another option would be buying a "charge only" cable, such as this one:

http://www.amazon.com/PortaPow-Micro-USB-Cable-Charging/dp/B0088HTYUE

u/mulderc · 1 pointr/Nexus5

Poetic Borderline Bumper Case for Google Nexus 5 Black/Gray (3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic) by Poetic http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FNWM2GU/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_G-Ywub0JYR0D2

u/lagerlover · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

I prefer getting them with the frame although I've replaced it both ways. THIS with frame and THIS without frame.

u/FirstTimeWang · 1 pointr/Nexus5

I've got one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G6AP27Y/

It's ok. Here are the pros:

  1. It's an armband

  2. Neoprene doesn't absorb odor, washes easily.

  3. Cheapish?

    Cons:

  4. the armband is really small, I'm pretty skinny and it's even tight on me. Any dude with some serious guns is going to be cutting off circulation.

  5. Really hard to manipulate the side buttons when it's in the pouch.

  6. Not quite as hard to interact with the touch screen, but the plastic isn't tight over the phone so it's not great.
u/spif · -1 pointsr/Nexus5

I got this case after seeing the drop test video and reading the reviews. So far so good!

u/USBturtle · 9 pointsr/Nexus5

So far I've had no problems using these for my nexus. Prior to owning the nexus, the car mount I used for my note 2 so size and weight isn't a problem.

Mountek Ngroove. Pops in the cd slot and extends to lock in tightly. Squeeze the cushioned sides together to grasp the phone, one button release on the back pops it free. I stuck an NFC tag on it so it automatically shuts off wifi, turns on bluetooth, and turns media volume to 100 percent. No problem plugging in a charger either.
