Definitely "Blindsight" by Peter Watts. It's about as hard as sci-fi can get, but it's one of those rare books that can completely blow your mind. It's a First Contact story with a really fascinating take on the evolution of consciousness, with profound implications for human cognition. Watts just released a sequel, "Echopraxia," which is equally great.

Sean's favorite book is Dune and this is HG's list of favorites from the community. My favorites are the Hyperion Cantos and pretty much anything by Asimov, Heinlein, and Bradbury.

This book is literally the most accurate depictions of aliens in my opinion. This will get you hype for the creatures in NMS.

I just got this book, The Making of Middle-earth, the other day. I've yet to finish it, but so far it has spoken about Tolkien's history and his love of mythology. Including his naming techniques.

Thanks for that; I wasn't aware of Roko's Basilisk but found a breezey explainer (on Slate ). It is interesting; the survey questions made me think about a 2011 Brian Greene book which runs through a bunch of theories of multiple or simultaneous universes.

I did a bit of searching but could not find a pdf or digital version of the story. Amazon has a book of his early years which includes 'Why?' here

The original Asimov book of stories it was in is called 'The Future in Question' (the title of every story is literally a question).
