It depends on what time period you're after, but i can mention some of the most influential 19th/20th century Norwegian writers, some are in the same vein as Ibsen, the others are good writers which should be noted.

  • Alexander Kielland (1849 – 1906) wrote among others, novels Garman and Worse , Skipper Worse and Gift (Poison). The plot of the novels are often added to the hometown Stavanger, and he was known for strong criticism of the school and the church and how the bourgeoisie exploited working class. The Novel Gift is a good example of his criticism of contemporary educational system . Kielland disliked class distinction and he believed in women's strength and women's rights. Much like Ibsen.

  • Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832 – 1910) wrote very diverse literature, both plays, poetry , novels , articles , speeches , letters and peasant stories (stories based on the common man). His stories renewed storytelling , and he created the modern saga drama. He also wrote bourgeois contemporary drama and problem drama. Bjørnson wrote the lyrics for many famous songs, including Norway's national song.

  • Knut Hamsun (1859 – 1952) Hamsun is probably Norways second best known author, although he's not quite in the same vein as Ibsen, his books are quite haunting. Hamsun first received wide acclaim with his 1890 novel Hunger (Sult). The semiautobiographical work described a young writer's descent into near madness as a result of hunger and poverty in the Norwegian capital of Kristiania (modern name Oslo). To many, the novel presages the writings of Franz Kafka and other twentieth-century novelists with its internal monologue and bizarre logic.
ely. Hamsun’s prose often contains rapturous depictions of the natural world, with intimate reflections on the Norwegian woodlands and coastline. For this reason, he has been linked with the spiritual movement known as pantheism ("There is no God," he once wrote. "Only gods."). Hamsun saw mankind and nature united in a strong, sometimes mystical bond. This connection between the characters and their natural environment is exemplified in the novels Pan, A Wanderer Plays on Muted Strings, and the epic Growth of the Soil, "his monumental work" credited with securing him the Nobel Prize in literature in 1920.

  • Amalie Skram (1846 – 1905) Her work can be divided into three categories: Novels concerning marriage, which explored taboo topics such as female sexuality, and the subservient status of women in that period. These works were perceived by many as overly provocative and resulted in open hostility from some segments of society.
Multi-generation novels, which dealt with the fate of a family over several generations. With these she explored the social institutions and conditions of the time and campaigned for change.
Mental hospital works such as Professor Hieronimus and Paa St. Jørgen, which dealt with the primitive and brutal conditions of such institutions of the period. Her novels created a major stir in Denmark and precipitated improvements in these institutions.
She is recognized as an early and strong proponent of what has come to be known as the women's movement, setting the early European trend. Her works, which had been generally forgotten with her death, were rediscovered and received strong recognition in the 1960s. Several of her works are currently available in recent translations to English.

What made Ibsen famous outside of Norway was that he took up themes such as women's rights , bigoted moral attitudes, double standards and hypocrisy. Which was outrageous back then. If you enjoyed "A Doll's House" i would personally recommend that you check out Forraadt [(Betrayed)](http://www.amazon.com/Betrayed-Amalie-Skram/dp/0863581145/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420308756&sr=8-2&keywords=Betrayed+Amalie+Skram by Amalie Skram) by Amalie Skram.

>Since the marketplace of ideas is, for intellectuals, a meritocracy, I can't see how it would lead to control, or why it would matter that a subset of 'intellectuals' are not well rounded?

Oh boy. You don't even begin to understand it. Again I have the problem of having to explain something in a comment that should really take a book or two. I really can't explain all that in a comment. For example only scientists have a meritocratic marketplace of ideas, but intellectuals never had it.

So I will just recommend some books and longer articles:

After you begin to catch at least a hint of what it is about, we can come back and discuss it in detail.
