I agree with your doc, my knees still rattle when doing squats (that's perfectly normal), but the popping noise when climbing stairs stopped completely and I had those for many years. I intensified the squats with free weights gradually.
My doctor recommended stationary cycling and I've found it to be valuable. My ankle doesn't bother me at all and I can get a good little workout in. I didn't want to spend money for a gym membership just to use the bikes and I don't have room for a full sized one in my house but I did find this and it works wonders. Compact and can be slid under my bed when not in use.
