Two general types of experience you can get: hands-on, and book learning.

The former is very important, but not too difficult to do. A fair number of people in the Portland area go mushroom hunting occasionally, even if they only know a species of two. Sucking up to the right people is surprisingly effective. Also, getting in touch with or joining organizations like Oregon Mycological Society or the Cascade Mycological Society can be immensely helpful in making contacts and finding hunting partners/mentors.

The latter is also very important, as there is some much you can learn without actually holding a mushroom in your hands. For books, accessible guides like Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest and All That the Rain promises and More are great for getting started, and heftier books like Mushrooms Demystified are good for those looking to take the next step in learning. Online, the hunting and identification board on The Shroomery, Mushroom Observer, and /r/mycology are great places to lurk and just soak in info, while sites like Mushroom Expert are good places to explore and follow what interests you.

> Sometimes that uses scientifically-valid concerns (anti-pipeline stuff), but more often its just crap

I wish a lot of our activists and tinfoil hat conspiracy folks would understand this. I doubt they realize they're becoming unwitting pawns of foreign powers.

China is getting better at this and there is already a lot of evidence they have tried implanting backdoors in many devices and backbone electronics they sell here in the states. The goal being to destroy our production of these devices via this kind of FUD and then provide them to us (with all their backdoors). Huawei is a government owned company largely known for their military contracts. They have been extremely cosy with lots of terrible Chinese government activities against their own, and foreign, peoples.

Wired magazine did a huge, excellent piece on how the 'growing polarization' seen in all social media platforms in our country is being largely MANUFACTURED by foreign entities/bots posting articles/comments/etc. The goal being to destroy US confidence in the target political or economic effort. I recommend that as a great read too.
(many other articles as well on Wired as well as a great video from Smarter Everyday:)

This also happened during the Cold War. There is a great book called 'Command and Control' that discussed this tactic and is a very highly recommended read. Russians used their intelligence gathering to discover any western nuclear accidents/failures/blunders - so they could report them to the news media and activist groups to make everyone think western military/government is incompetent. Then, you fund protest groups - ones legitimately concerned about nuclear proliferation - and get them protesting for complete bans. But only in the target countries. You suppress that in your own. Now you have a country internally fighting itself without having to lift a finger yourself. Funding protests groups cost next to nothing in an espionage budget. It's the same thing we did to de-stabilize Banana Republic countries for decades. In some ways, Dr Strangeglove was a masterpiece for Russia's goals.

Yes, you can be right - but completely playing into the hands of your enemies. We must remember that we are all Americans - of every race, creed, religion, age, and gender. And that our strength is in our diversity all striving together towards the greatest good and dignity of every person. Not in tearing each other down. Not in fighting each other as factions. Not in disposing of arguing with ideas for moronic fist fights in the streets. Not for the destruction of liberties for 'safety'. Not in alienating and blaming anyone by age, race, or religion.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002E6RERU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 That sabre? I have the one with dye in it as well, hopefully I don't need to use it but I do love the hand strap for when I go running along the swc at dusk.

Just got back from buying one of these portable units from Best Buy. The Washington Square location had about 10 of them in stock, priced at $449 on the floor. Price-matching to Amazon was easy, literally just showed them my phone, bringing the price to $349.

I spent a couple of hours researching models in the $300-$500 range and this one was consistently rated well (#1 selling model on Amazon too).

Hope this helps!

Saying DOCSIS 3.0 supports 1Gbps will probably end up being misleading to most people. Practically, it depends largely on other issues; primary among them the number bonded upstream and downstream channels.

DOCSIS 3 modems which support more than 8x4 (down/up) are only just now being released.

If you have something like:

http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-DOCSIS-Cable-Modem-5341J/dp/B0063K4NN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418777025&sr=8-1&keywords=zoom+docsis+3.0

you'll be fine on the extreme tier here (quoted 150Mbps/20Mbps)

However, if we are lucky enough to get a ~300Mbps tier, you'll only be good-ish. I say good-ish, because at that point you'll want a 16x4:

Yes - the bill that's trying to get signatures is not just research. It's advocating for broad legalization in public use - before we even know what it's effects are.

Sure, legalize for labratory tests. But just turning something like this loose on the general population with almost no idea of the short or long term effects is irresponsible. No?

Also, let's us just be honest. This is just the usual Overton window social media astroturfing by the Oregon Psilocybin Society.

Read "Trust Me I'm Lying" by Ryan Holiday. He was doing this stuff long before you guys started.

That's the type I use. You strap it to your hand and then it's just there, and you don't have to worry about dropping it if you're surprised. Very convenient. https://www.amazon.com/SABRE-RED-Pepper-Spray-Protection/dp/B002E6RERU/ref=pd_nav_hcs_bia_t_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=WNV2TABVWJFB4DKW1HD9

Seriously. I carry one of the little "put!" kangaroo pocket ashtray things around. They work pretty well.

the key isnt that the normal folk like you and me should pay more.

The top 1-2% pay jackshit compared to the rest of us.

have stocks? they pay even less.

this is a great read. he actually talks about how college has become a money making scheme more than a concerned about education.

We get these in our apartment too! They like to swarm in the center of the living room, usually just a few of them.
They don't bother me as much as they bother my partner, so he bought this and now I get to watch him play tennis with bugs.

u/quickfics · 6 pointsr/Portland

I use this. It lives in the freezer and, as a bonus, it hangs on a drawer so you can scrape food scraps directly into it from a cutting board.

There are appartments and condos and even some neighborhoods that disallow in-window AC units. For reasons.

This is why you can now buy In-room AC units that have an attached hose to exhaust the hot air, and trays for condensate. They are not as efficient, but if that's all you can use, its better than the alternative.

Had a SB6141 at first, however there have been some really strange issues with that modem (take a look at: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29437035-Speed-Speed-Issues-with-SB1641) that affected mine as well. I would only get max about 1Mb/sec down with it.

I swapped it for a Zoom 5341J , and it has been rock solid for me. Native IPv6 works fine through it, and I max out my connection.

u/barklite · 4 pointsr/Portland

What kind are you using? I have one like this and it only gets flies in the summer months if I don’t empty it every few days. But most of the year I can let it go nearly a week without issue. You do have to change the filters every now and then with this type though.

I use this silicone one in my freezer, and it's flexible enough that I've never needed to thaw it before dumping. Really keeps odors and compost sludge to a minimum.

u/beirie · 2 pointsr/Portland

Just ask them to put this on their dog. It sprays a lemon scent when he barks and will deff make him stop. Problem solved. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002D31QU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1421026917&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40

> it is for people to talk about a place

And yet we have moved all moving/city questions to 'askPortland'.

Antifa and the PB's are TINY FRINGE groups who's activities promote and always end in violence (remember the 'punch a nazi' signs?). This is about 500 people total that show up at these events. Hardly any statistical amount of Portlanders - yet we give them a constant platform to promote their rhetoric and violence.

I say it's time to yank that platform from them or at least stop giving them more screen and news time than their tiny fringe activities deserve. Racism has no place in Portland. Violence has no place in Portland. I stand up to them both. We are a nation of laws. If you got a friggen gripe - then be part of the solution of fixing those systems, changing laws, and creating something great. Not trashing our parks and turning a block or two of our city into thunderdome on a monthly basis.

It's a tactic both the PB's and Antfi are taking full advantage of to make them seem far larger than the few hundred extremists they are. A social media tactic well documented here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0074VTHH0/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

> The expectation only people who live in the city will post on this sub is laughable.

It is laughable - because you were the only one that brought that idea up.

But perhaps you're right. It does seem like attendance at these clown-fests seems to continually be dropping. Maybe people are becoming smarter.

For blackberries you want this thing. Maybe a flamethrower if shit gets real.

This is the Volokh Conspiracy blog. They have nothing to do with Reason Magazine other than being the current webhost. Ilya Somin is one of the premier experts in this area and has written extensively on Kelo v. New London and other cases.

There is this stuff on amazon called liquid ass. A squirt or two near the camper is enough to make even the filthiest of criddlers run for the hills. Liquid Ass https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OCEWGW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_baQEzbS860TK0

It's becoming obvious that all your social media is being manipulated. Twitter/Facebook/Reddit/etc. Professors have shown that the entire narrative of a subreddit/post can be controlled by as few as 5 bot accounts. $200 is enough to get a clearly false post onto the front page.

https://youtu.be/FxNvUWN3vYk

The key is that you should put NO faith in arguments nor articles written on social media/twitter/etc. Consider it all fun theater, but don't use it to form your opinions or be educated on a subject.

But this is not new. All during the Cold War, Russia would manipulate groups to stall and derail US politics. Despite the fact the whole effort was very poorly handled and turned into a witch hunt, the Red Scare searches for Russian manipulation was quite real.

If you think you're immune, know that the military's handling of nuclear weapons is often seen as incompetent and comical. See Dr. Strangeglove. Despite the fact Russia had even MORE incidents and worse handling, they did a tremendously good job of capitalizing on our failures. When their intelligence found an incident of mishandling, they would leak it to the news, and then use our own news/advocacy groups work against the government. They absolutely did fund/feed/use well-meaning groups that aligned with their goals: create scandal, discredit politicians, control narratives, ferment social disorder. Sound familiar?

Worth a read about cold war nuclear programs and had a good chapter on these tactics:
