Huh, how did I miss that one? Definitely going to order it. I have the Brendan Mullen Oral and Visual History on my coffee table and that one is pretty sweet too.

Edit: so I added Me and My Friends to my cart on Amazon and this book called Fandemonium, apparently dedicated to the fans of RHCP, was a suggested purchase. Looks awesome! I'm into photography so it looks like a nice way to combine two of my favorite things haha

I'm not sure! A quick amazon search showed this, but it appears to not be exactly the same, and the reviews are pretty bad lol

I got this book for like 70% off when Borders was closing down, and I can definitely recommend it, it's really cool!

FAQ:

What boxset is this?:
This was a limited edition release I bought back in 2006 for the album’s original launch. It was offered on RedHotChiliPeppers.com if you had an official fan membership if I remember correctly. I believe it was re-released some time after for those who weren’t able to get it originally. It contained the album and a dvd which had the behind the scenes making of the Dani California video as well as the band giving commentary on the majority of the tracks.

Where do I get one?:
I doubt you’d be able to get hold of one in mint condition for a reasonable price but it seems like secondhand ones vary from $20-50. I would check the likes of eBay, Discogs and Amazon.

I like this sole review, from Amazon's NA site

> when I saw this book I was really excited. I have seen the funky monks documentary and I knew that the making of this album was something great. This book is a joke. Let me put it this way. The author actually describes what each song sounds like, as if we have never hear it before. No insight on how the songs came about. No information about the instruments and recording gear they used. I think I paid a dollar fifty for this book, and I feel ripped off.

If you're talking about this album purchase, I listened to the previews and it's fine.

I'd say your best bet is to just go out and buy the CDs (If you really want to pay for music). Other than that there are other ways to obtain music over the internet..

Haven't heard of it, but looks like it can't be too rare - there's an Amazon listing for it.

They're reproduction copies which come with this book by Gillian G. Gaar

> You say you wish people were less lazy about discussing it, then go on to point out Fantano's valid critique. And if you want less lazy discussion, make it less lazy. Discuss. Talk with passion. It seems like that's sorta what you're going for here, but it's more complaining than discussing.

I don't know what to tell you about starting the conversation, as I've been trying to do that about pretty much every album in every other post I make around here. But I chose Fantano's post to voice my frustration because regardless of his ability to make a cogent argument about AK's vocals, we once again have someone who's decided that IWY is, to directly quote him, "inconsequential" and "middling" and neither IWY or TG measure up to the "iconic" funk rock of BSSM. This is a pretty widespread and prevailing take on these past two albums, and it makes no sense to me as someone who sees these as two of the more experimental offerings of the band's career and finds that cause to celebrate, even when I don't personally like the result. Sure, he's not saying "you're wrong for disagreeing with me", and this is really more of a last straw situation, but it's like I said before-- it's indicative of a larger culture where it's somehow just understood that BSSM is the best they've ever gotten and nothing with Josh will ever measure up in comparison because post-John Chilis are aimless and struggling. You see it in commercial reviews, you see it in fan reviews all over... There's a point when opinions become ideologies, and that is the part that frustrates me. "TG's no BSSM or Cali"-- yeah, and BSSM's no UMPP, and Cali's no MM, and SA's no OHM. Each album has its strengths and weaknesses and it does every album a disservice to use comparisons like this for shorthand as to an album's supposed quality. This band is fucking excellent all of the time, anything that doesn't resonate with me is about me and not an indicator of failure on their part. It's a missed connection. I've said this many times elsewhere, for what it's worth.

It's just an aggravating situation to be in as a fan whose opinions diverge from the larger "BSSM is #1, John-less albums suck" conversation. It's like speaking a different language. How do we communicate when brain melting guitar solos and loud backing vocals are prioritized in one world and atmospheric, ambient support of the rhythm section is prioritized in another? Maybe IWY is toothless and poppy, but I don't understand how it's any more toothless and poppy than the literally pop-inspired BTW, which rarely receives that indictment. It's just shit you hear over and over through the years. It's irritating.
