Yes! Most people here probably won't agree (in the wrong subreddit lol), but I am looking to make the switch away from my Roku 3.

The Roku 3 was awesome when it came out, but the competition has surpassed it since it's launch. If you are very price sensitive and you can get a Roku 3 for ~$60 then I think it's justifiable. Otherwise hell no!

Here are the alternatives:

  • Chromecast - $35
  • Very compelling price. Much cheaper than a Roku 3
  • BUT it requires another "smart" device to do anything
  • Nexus Player - $99 (Not confirmed)
  • Just launched today!
  • Don't have all the information, but it appears to have a solid SDK for 3rd party development. In comparison, developers don't seem to enjoy working with Roku's SDK. The result is a lonely app ecosystem outside of major (although most important) big providers like Netflix, HBO Go, etc.
  • This is what I will probably switch to
  • Amazon Fire TV - $84
  • Great if you are already in the Amazon ecosystem (have Amazon Prime, a Kindle, etc.)
  • Retails cheaper than Roku 3
  • Apple TV - $99
  • Great if you are already in the Apple ecosystem (have an iPad, use iTunes, etc.). Check out airplay to learn more.
  • Can't use airplay unless your using an Apple device. Pretty exclusive ecosystem.

In my opinion ANY of the above devices are better than the Roku 3. I got mine before the Chromecast launched. Since then the Amazon Fire TV came out and now Google Player has launched. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Roku when I first got it and I think it was a damn good device in its day. But it is clearly in need of a refresh, and I'm not sure Roku is up to the task of competing with the 800lb gorillas that are fighting tooth and nail in this space.

Just for good measure here are some major gripes I have with my Roku 3:

  1. The interface. This thing is on my 50" TV in my living room and the interface is hideous. It's unacceptable.

  2. Lack of cool apps (channels). Roku has been unable to foster a vibrant development community. As a result, I haven't seen more than a handful (and I think that's being generous) of useful channels outside of the big content providers. I consider apps like Netflix and Hulu to be a given when buying a set top box, but where are the apps that come out of left field and wow us? These 3rd party apps nobody sees coming are the result of cultivating a thriving ecosystem of developers who are empowered to create awesome stuff. I am hoping that's what Google's Nexus Player achieves, but if history is any indication Apple will be the first to make that happen. Either way it will be a tech behemoth that has the intense resources required to make it happen.

  3. Lack of "casting". Now I should say that a week or so ago Roku had a blog post about how screen mirroring has been added in an update that is rolling out as we speak. My box has not received that update yet, so I haven't had a chance to give it a try. That being said, this was likely made a priority as soon as the Chromecast launched and started eating into Roku's sales. It took them this long to provide their response to that market pressure. This is what I mean when I'm talking about Roku not being able to compete with the likes of Google and Apple. I don't necessarily blame them for it, but it affects their users.

TL;DR: There is no reason to buy a Roku 3 at this time.

Firstly I would get a "wifi channel scanner" app like Wifi Analyzer for Android, or anything that has a similar graphic to this. Find a channel that has the least amount of SSIDs on it, but try to stick to 1, 6, and 11 to avoid overlapping 2 channels at once. You can get a full signal but have horrible transfer ("tx") rates if it's too congested.

If that doesn't help you can look into something like Ethernet over power. Then you don't have to worry about only 1 device not working with wifi but everything else is fine. Plus better speed for video streaming.

Lastly, the most complicated option, installing DD-WRT on the router so you can get more control options and more in depth feedback, type in the model number here to see if it's supported, then check out some tutorials or videos on YouTube, it's very popular so there's going to be a lot of help available. Only do it if you're comfortable, and are ok with the possibility that it could "brick" the router. It's a fantastic tool even if you never use 90% of the added features, plus it's free.

On Kodi (not on Roku, but can be installed on cheap android sticks) there is an addon named Pseudotv that should do exactly this. It can also "build TV channels" around internet streams. Be sure not to stream illegal content (a lot of youtube videos showing how) and get your mother in law in trouble. Should work great for local content.

If you use a windows based HDMI stick (maybe with a cheap flash drive for storage, there is a nifty Pseudotv library tool.

Note, this can be accomplished without a windows stick for a lot cheaper, using an android stick, and you get better app support (windows 10 apps do not support remote controls out of the box. If you go that route use this to enable remote support in netflix)

There are a lot of options when it comes to client/server setup.

The quad-core streaming stick is currently $40 on Amazon. Be a good kid and buy them a new one. Looks like Best Buy has them for the same price. It will be a MUCH better experience than the purple one which I believe came out in 2012.

still, it's very compelling even if you are not an amazon prime member. if i didn't already have a roku3 i would buy the amazon box, since i'm just watching a third party subscription on them (netflix+hulu), so who provides the $100 box means nothing as long as it's got the best possible specs inside.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CX5P8FC

amazon's comparison chart has a few obvious mistakes. i do get bloomberg tv and pandora on my roku, while hbo go only works in your house if you already have a cabletv subscription in your hose. i think roku will finally have to come out with a keyboard if they want to compete with voice recognition.

u/bitchkat · 2 pointsr/Roku

Watching OTA channels is as simple as hooking up an antenna to your TV. If you want to record OTA, you can build a MythTV box or buy something like this

Now if you want to be able to stream content to different TV's in your house, something like Simple.TV might be what you're looking for. The Simple.TV hardware is made my Silicon Dust (aka HDHomerun).

Which Roku are you using? That sounds a lot like my experiences with the CW app. I found our newer Roku 2 2720R, and the app seems to work fine there. I'm starting to wonder if the apps aren't backwards compatible, basically. Our older model was the the Roku 2 XS.

You can buy directly from Amazon these days. And as for power supply it supports 240 so you can just buy an adaptor if you don't want to shell out for a new one.

Edit: amazon link for roku on sale. AUD$97 shipped.

It's the Roku 2 with the curvy shape instead of the more boxy one. It has the remote with the headphone jack. I can check in the morning for a model number.

Looks like this one, based on a quick Amazon search.

u/unwiredben · 1 pointr/Roku

Not directly from the headphone jack, but you can plug a SPDIF-to-headphone adapter into that jack and use that, something like https://www.amazon.com/PROZOR-Digital-Converter-Toslink-Adapter/dp/B00KNNSKV0

u/TehCactus_ · 1 pointr/Roku

I've heard good things about the Inteset INT-422, haven't used it myself though.

u/gestalt162 · 3 pointsr/Roku

The Amazon Page lists the differences.

If you want to watch 1080p, you'll need at least the roku 1.

The main differences between the 1 and 3:

  • Fancier remote- Motion control for games, headphone jack for silent viewing. In practice I never use either of these functions- whether they're worth it is up to you.

  • Faster networking- The 3 comes with dual band wireless and an ethernet port, which the other models do not. Since most of the Roku's use is for viewing streams not local to the unit, this may or may not be a big deal.

  • Faster processor Apparently 5x as fast as the other models. I have a LT and a 3, and I can say the LT chugs along most of the time on menu interfaces, while the 3 zips right along fluidly. Video playback quality is the same (although the LT is outputting in analog).

If those features are worth $40 to you, then go get the 3. If not, you can easily settle for a lesser model.

You can buy a "smart" power strip like this

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003P2UMQ2

so when the TV turns off it'll turn off everything else plugged into the strip.

>Roku HD Streaming Player

Does the device look like this one from 2012? https://www.amazon.com/Roku-Streaming-Player-Old-Model/dp/B007KEZMX4

u/Stiltzkinn · 2 pointsr/Roku

I use this router with my VPN:
https://amzn.com/B01AL7P1FU

It work flawlessly.

u/cjcox4 · 3 pointsr/Roku

And that's for "output"? No. In fact, looking a the specs, it seems to have SPDIF (optical) out though. Also says that it has a headphone jack (but I wonder if it's the crummy thing that might be on the remote, like with other Roku devices).

If so, you can buy devices to convert optical SPDIF to something else. In my case I wanted a mini-jack. I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KNNSKV0

u/datalynx1 · 2 pointsr/Roku

The SD Card only stores programing info for the Roku's apps
If you want to view you media then you need a usb flash drive
I use this on my Roku 3

The physical remotes use RF, not WiFi. The p607 supports the "enhanced" remote, which is RF, the p605 does not. I wish I had noticed that when I bought mine. I ended up using my Harmony + hub with the hub centered behind the TV because I ran into the same problem with the soundbar blocking the IR receiver.

Edit: Apparently the enhanced remote does work with the p605 according to comments on Amazon TCL BRC64 New Enhanced RF Remote Control Replacement for Roku TV

u/Meshe212 · 1 pointr/Roku

I use this with an optical cable connected to my tv

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B077MXFJGQ

u/b21ono · 1 pointr/Roku

This one works for me..

The 2016 Roku Ultra (4640) has optical out and will transcode DD+ to DD.

https://www.amazon.com/Roku-Ultra-Streaming-Player-Enhanced/dp/B01M05030B

u/hyperblaster · 2 pointsr/Roku

It's a Roku HD. This pre-dates the 1,2 and 3 naming scheme Roku now uses.

u/zBGam · 2 pointsr/Roku

I have the same issues a have literally tried everything including hardwiring it. There is something seriously wrong with this firmware version. TV reset, Network reset, bought

Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Fast 10/100 LAN Wired Network Adapter for MacBook, Chromebook, Windows, Linux, Wii, Wii U & Switch Game Console https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00484IEJS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.ZhNBbWK84Q26

The TV does the same thing. Nothing works and TCL said we can't repair your TV it's out of warranty. Umm it is not the TV it's the firmware.

This TV have been flawless till this firmware version.
Firmware v8.1.0 Build 4140

u/beefsiym · 5 pointsr/Roku

you could buy a smart power strip that senses when the TV is turned off, and thus cuts power to the Roku.

u/Protuhj · 1 pointr/Roku

The phone app should work until you get something "better".

Here's something on Amazon I have no idea if it will work or not.

u/whiprush · 1 pointr/Roku

I can confirm that unfortunately global Roku search does not work on your Plex media.

When I moved my Roku to a bedroom I had to crank down the quality a bit (but still 1080p) to get it working reliably. This all depends on how good the signal is to your room.

An option to consider is that you can go with powerline adapters for a more reliable signal that would have no problem streaming the highest quality settings: http://smile.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-PA4010KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B00AWRUICG/

u/thebassdude · 2 pointsr/Roku

I have three of these, no complaints.
