PUA seems to work because like you said about eye contact and indicating interest, it's based on shit that's gets results. I personally like Conversationally Speaking. It's basically "how to not have awkward conversations" and more. It's the good parts of PUA without the creepy endgoal of having sex with a random chick met at a bar.

If you want more from David Foster Wallace on individual consciousness, check out his short story 'Good Old Neon' from the collection Oblivion. Probably my all-time favorite English-language short story.
