Check out this book, it really helped me narrow my search:

I started looking at Hans Christians then downsized my criteria (price and duty rates to import) to Westsail 32. It’s everything I could want. Haven’t been offshore yet, but when I’m ready I’ve got the boat.

A lot of end-points (La Paz, for instance) have boats where the owner has had enough, bit off more than they could chew and are calling it quits. You’d have to make your way there, but the boat would be ready to cruise.

Check out the Bluewater Cruising Assoc or similar for knowledge, camaraderie, advice. Lots of nautical miles under their collective keels.

The Old Man and the Sea.

The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.

Moby Dick.

Other people listed some excellent picks and I'm avoiding giving you duplicates.

Some stories of notable historic voyages and battles, but mostly just the picture of the insane scale of ship production and shipping and what an enormous part of many nation's economies it was. So much stuff from that era was just batguano nuts.
