I think it's a kinda poor way to learn kanji on it's own, but for kana and general vocabulary it's fine. It's a good supplement to use in conjunction with other resources.

For kanji a friend of mine recommended Remembering the Kanji by Heisig. His method is working the best for me.

Well, AFAIK there hasn't been any new media releases in the main Haruhi franchise since about 2013. But, the spin-off The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan had the last volume of the manga released in 2017, and the Blu-Ray box set of the anime series is set to come out in December of this year, so I guess the stakeholders still have something to promote. Late last year there was a series of Haruhi collaborations with DMM Games, so I suppose a Shadowverse collaboration isn't the most random thing ever.
