Yeah I can understand that. Sorta like cleaning the large pieces of trash out of your car but not vacuuming.

You've been super helpful. Can't thank you enough. By the way, I noticed a "Tornado brush" that the guy says he wraps the saturated patches around. Might be useful to try it out so you don't get those don't pushed down bristles. The stainless steel seems a bit worrying though. This pack is only $3 more with both an extra brush and a cleaning swab. So I'll give it a try and see what works.

I did love the look of that shiny barrel/gun. So I guess I'll be doing the break down every time as well. Good habit to get into.

Any preference on a cleaner/lube? I've heard CLP mentioned a lot around these parts- but an all-and-one seems odd to me.

>I tried several of the reusable Surefire earplugs, and they were crap

Came here to say this. They sound like a good idea... and they aren't.

My gang usually just buys basic ear plugs from a construction equipment store. Smth like this: https://www.constructiongear.com/holemaeaboxo.html or https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BYAP7I/?tag=ybduk-21 - 30 bucks for a box of 100/200, and they work well enough against a 12ga outdoor (would probably be kinda meh for indoor use of a short-barrel .223 with a muzzle comp.

My favorite lube/cleaner

This isn't a bad little cleaning kit, I keep it in my shotgun bag. Same kit multiple names it's sold under.

I also have a boresnake.

By no means is this what you have to have. If you look around the Ballistol is highly liked for firearms, it has always worked wonders for me. I always clean my guns everytime I shoot them, personal preference.

I have the same combo set but I only keep the 28" on it. I use this:
http://www.cabelas.ca/product/65171/cabelas-canada-floating-shotgun-case

because I mostly waterfowl hunt, and it floats/has an ammo pocket. Its a bit long so the nose bend if you set it down on that end, but the gun fits snug side to side and is guickly pulled out when I get to a spot.

You should never store your gun in a case like this though. THey can't breath, so moisture builds up and causes rust. I store mine in a sock like this:

I found it on amazon. It's not bad, pretty easy to assemble. The wooden retaining bar was clunky and I just didn't install it, but otherwise I like it.

That's similar to what I'm looking for, but I'm wanting/needing a rear sight as well. I had these but the front sight had this crazy vent rib adapter, and none of them fit.

They do make "gun grease." However, there's nothing special about it and it's just repackaged grease in small tubes that are actually pretty convenient.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy yourself a 1 lb. tub of Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease. It'll cost you less than $10 and that'll be about what you pay for 1 oz. of "Gun Grease." The only limitation to this is that you can't throw it in your shooting bag and keep it handy whenever you're shooting.

If you want a tube of something, I like Triflow or Krieghoff Gun Glide.

At the end of the day, though, it's most important to keep the grease clean. When you're done shooting, wipe it off and reapply.

This is what I used. I left it on for a week before I got around to touching it again. Not my best idea.

I have a PAST Field Shield that I use when I shoot my O/U - It kicks more than my semi autos and if I'm shooting it, I'm going through a couple hundred rounds... The Field Shield saves my shoulder. The only downfall is during the summer you get sweaty underneath.

1.) Don't shoot 00/Slugs if you don't have to.

2.) If you have to, shoot lighter loads of 00/Slugs.

3.) Get a sissy pad ... That's just good sense.

4.) Try re-positioning the stock when shooting... maybe you have it in a bad spot prone to slipping.

5.) Hold it tight.

I get a lot of plastic fouling in my chokes. I've found that any of these approaches will do the job:

  1. Soaking the choke tubes in Ed's Red overnight.
  2. The previously-mentioned brass brush + electric drill. Finding a long-enough rod can be a problem w/ 32 inch barrels, and can be messy.
  3. Spraying a bore solvent in the barrels and let it sit (with chokes screwed-in) for a few minutes. Then, follow w/ a Tornado Brush (use the brass version if you're worried about scratches; I use the stainless steel kind).

I prefer "3". because it's the least time-consuming for me while still being pretty damn thorough.

"2" is probably the most thorough, however, and doesn't take much elbow grease. Having a Gun Butler (or similar) really helps.

"1" takes zero physical effort but won't address plastic fouling in the barrels.

You should be able to get a choke for $40 or less. You can use either full or mod for trap, you will probably get different opinions in this. For skeet a "skeet" choke is best. (I actually use an improved cylinder choke (IC) since the constriction is only slightly tighter and it came with my gun) Basically for skeet you want an open choke since there are no long shots. For storage I just put them in a plastic bag in my gun case, choke tube holders are cheap too.
