This is a timely thread. I've been thinking about taking my DSL out of its little corner and playing with it again.

I have some recommendations for you, OP. I will second the suggestions of Animal Crossing: Wild World, Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, and Ghost Trick, but wanted to give special mention to the following:

  • Elite Beat Agents - This is a rhythm game where you tap circles and draw lines while following the beat of a song, as secret agents dance in the background and try to save the world. I know it sounds kooky, and it is, but that's half the fun. The Japanese original, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, was such a huge cult hit that they came out with the English version in Elite Beat Agents. There are a bunch of great songs on it, and the covers are actually decent (a couple are better than the original). Each song opens with a story that introduces someone in need of your help -- and somehow it's your dancing/cheering which pushes him/her to succeed. The stories are often hilarious, but there is one that will rip your heart out and make you teary. Absolutely love this game. (Screen protector strongly recommended!)

  • Rhythm Heaven - Another rhythm-based game, but these two are just really fun and I decided to recommend both. Rhythm Heaven is different from Elite Beat Agents in that it's more a collection of mini games you need to beat in order to advance. There are about 5 mini games (I think) in a collection, and once you beat each one individually, you are given a 'recap' round that basically mashes them all together. This game looks deceptively simple but can be so damn difficult at times that achieving success is so satisfying! The beats in this game are very catchy.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Lovely RPG. I thought the visuals were beautiful, and it was fun to play. Not much to say except it's a Zelda game, an awesome and fun one at that. The game makes use of the DSL's touchscreen. Controls may be kind of a bit hard to familiarize yourself with if you're used to normal console controls for Zelda, but after a while you get the hang of it and it's really fun to slash your sword around.

  • Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Tactical turn-based strategy game where you try to battle it out with enemies and crush them all. I didn't think I'd like it, but I'm SO glad I gave it a try. I remember staying up late into the night playing this. It's really addicting. There's a sequel, Days of Ruin, but I've never played that so can't give a personal opinion on it. It comes highly recommended, though.

  • Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon - Take the original Harvest Moon games that were about farming and raising animals and getting to know people in your town, and add in some RPG-ish dungeon crawling (where you can also tame monsters to help out on your farm), and you have Rune Factory. I will always have a soft spot for Harvest Moon games; this just adds another element to it.

  • New Super Mario Brothers - The DS iteration of Mario. Not sure what to really say except it's a fun platformer, and it reminds me of Super Mario 3 when I played.

  • Mario Kart DS - This is fun, and there's just something addictive about it that kept me coming back for yet another round. I liked this version, though some people do say the controls are a bit off, but I never experienced that.

Other games that have been strongly recommended by others (but I have not played):

  • Final Fantasy III
  • Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
  • Dragon Quest IX
  • Radiant Historia
  • Kirby Canvas Curse
  • Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

As someone who's owned a Switch since launch, I say the joycon and comfort grip are fine i'll try to put this in sections.

Controller: You can try the pro controller, but in my experience with the two i've bought, I've found that the left stick if you flick it on direction it bounces back the other direction, you may not find this to be an issue right away, but it caused a lot of issues for me when playing Sonic Mania and other games that require quick stick movement.

Cases: If you can get your hand on the Zelda Special Edition case that'd be great, but otherwise [This](https://www.amazon.com/TAKECASE-Nintendo-Switch-Case-Microfiber-Guarantee /dp/B06XYPPJ6M/ref=pd_cp_63_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=RBHQCTFZSKGBBVMX8GZ2) and This seem to be pretty good hefty cases.

Also This protective slim case should serve as nice armor to protect it from scratches.

Games: Personally i'd reccomend, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 (my fav), Sonic Mania, Mario Kart 8, Snipperclips (if you have someone to play with), these are all games I mostly enjoy, i'd recommend ARMS as well, but i found the game more frustrating than fun.

Screen Protector: This one shall do they're all mostly the same, just different price points and popularity, the on difference between some is tempered glass vs plastic.

I say always go with Tempered glass, unless you prefer the plastic for one reason or another

Yes, but get the original Legendary Edition with all DLCs from Amazon for only 18 bucks. It has way more mods, no paid mods, and the modded version will look better than the SE. The disk version includes a Steam key, and I bought that same item from Amazon not too long ago -- it arrived quickly and in good condition.

Idk how old she is so My recommendation is to get here one of those nintendo gift cards that she can use in the shop. That way you don't have to worry if she will like what ever game you get her & she can pick out what interests her the most. May I also recommend a carrying case and a SD card. I will link both if you want to take a look and figure something out. The reason I posted the 400 gig sd is because you want to (even though it's not necessary) future proof for when those downloads start to stack up.

Case: https://www.amazon.com/Orzly-Carry-Case-Compatible-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01NAUKS62/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=Nintendo+switch+case&qid=1567021561&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2661617011&s=gateway&sr=8-3

SD card: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-400GB-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B074RNRM2B/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?keywords=Micro+SD+card&qid=1567021659&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFLM0szQllHMUFTRzMmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzMTk1MjkxVklHVjJXMjNTREJLJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0NTgwNjMxNlpMUE5RRVZVU08md2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Original Xbox is going to be harder to find stuff for at this point, as it was two full console cycles ago.

You'll have better luck on the Wii. Ghostbusters is for the Wii, Lego Batman 2 features all the DC characters including Superman, and basically any of the Lego games are sure to be big hits. There are a ton of them.

I have no clue about the actual quality of the PC, might be shitty, but it's cheaper than the one you listed and specs-wise it's WAY better. Like its not even close. The one you picked out won't run a lot of the latest games on any setting. The one in the above link will, and it'll max out the settings on a fair number of them.

u/beef-supreme · 4 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

You should check out Shadow Warrior - it's on sale for $7.99 right now and it's at least 20 hours of solid FPS gameplay (or maybe i take a long time playing it..). Its a remake of the 90's game by the way, but quite extended and the graphics are great.

u/EliteAmateur · 3 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

Here are a bunch of games on sale at the moment (assuming you're on PC). Hopefully something sparks your interest.

Shadow Warrior $7.99

Tomb Raider $7.00

BioShock Infinite $7.49

Payday 2 $9.99

u/SquirtleSpaceProgram · 5 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

XBox 360 controller for Windows

Plug and play. Mine has been working perfectly for 3 years so far.

u/BC_Guy02 · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

I would hold off. I've played all the C&C games to date. Although this deal isnt on Steam, its origin, I would get this: Command and Conquer The Ultimate Collection

It encompasses nearly all of the Command and Conquer games all in one bundle. Although that deal is restricted to the US, I did see it drop 50% (from its regular $19.99) to $9.99. A much better deal considering it's got all the games.

Since some of the games are quite older, they do come with some inherent challenges getting them to run. Here are some links with workarounds should you choose to buy.

in regards to red alert 3, this pack on amazon contains it:

https://www.amazon.com/Command-Conquer-Ultimate-Collection-Online/dp/B009IR1SR0

i grabbed it for $5 about 3 years ago now.

Freelancer might interest you., though I'm not sure how well it's aged

u/thescarwar · 1 pointr/ShouldIbuythisgame

Ohh man did I have a favorite. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee was just the best game. Fighting kaiju against kaiju in the middle of a city.

u/thinkforaminute · 1 pointr/ShouldIbuythisgame

This one here I assume? I read the description and it said it's a high-definition remaster of FFX and FFX-2. Are those two different games?

u/spritle6054 · 1 pointr/ShouldIbuythisgame

If your ps3 is backwards compatible, you can just get the PS2 version

u/Depraved89 · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

i bought mine earlier this year from Amazon.com.
you need the physical copy.

here is a link to a used copy for you. All you need is the PHYSICAL cd. You just need to download the client from it.

i prefer the 3ds because it folds so it fits better in my pocket. also, if your charge port is fucked up you can get this which i don't think there's an equivalent for on the 2ds.

u/cecole1 · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

I guess I'm going against the grain here, but Dark Souls. Skyrim lost it's magic really quickly and I got bored. I've got 180 hours on Dark Souls and is the only game I've hit 100% achievements on Steam.

The difficulty it throws at you will change the way you game. It's tough, but fair. You'll seek out harder games. You'll crave it. You'll never pick "Easy" or "Normal" again. Even my brother said "Dark Souls ruined all other video games" for him.

Grab an Xbox controller for $25 and call it a day: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWLA

u/Masenkoe · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

Black Ops II is the best recent one, I think that'd be the wisest choice. It's $20 on Amazon right now with the first map pack, pretty good price.

My favorite CoD is still Call of Duty 4, followed by World at War but those are completely dead on consoles. CoD4 is still fairly strong on PC though.
Modern Warfare 3 and Ghosts are the worst in the series.

Are there any other recommendations you're looking for outside of shooters? As far as other games go I'd look into:

God of War Saga - 5 out of 6 God of War games (missing Ascension) $9.99 on Amazon sale (seriously just buy this now)

And some of these are on sale. Amazon links for convenience

Mass Effect Trilogy

Bioshock 1 & 2

The Last of Us

LA Noire

Tomb Raider

Killzone 3

And if he likes JRPGs

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster
