Oh cool I hadn't seen either the "THINGY" nor "Dualplay". It's a bummer that it looks like the "Dualplay" indiegogo never made it. That would have been useful. But you can't argue with the simplicity/accessibity/low cost of other hardware store based alternatives.
At some point down the road I do want to add in EXT port attachment handling so that we could support attachments like the sharshooter attachment (http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Move-Sharp-Shooter-3/dp/B002I0K622), that work will come after PS4 camera support (via https://github.com/bigboss-ps3dev/PS4EYECam) and DS4 support.
Omg your friend is an ass! I’m sorry but I’m amazed that thing is running! Please refrain from having the computer on until you get a proper cooler for BOTH your processor and graphics card. You are likely damaging the computer every time you run it.
for the processor
I don’t know what to do about the graphics card honestly but you need to cool that as well. You might be better off getting water cooling and installing it. But you also need to cool the GPU as well.
That picture of the acrylic that you don’t what it is, that is a water cooling block for the GPU!
Same with the processor, that’s a water cooling block sitting on it!
Your friend literally took out the water cooling but didn’t replace the fans!
I did the same thing. I bought it, was overwhelmed with controls and didn't want to buy a HOTAS, and put it down. Years later I picked it up in VR and I HIGHLY recommend it.
You can play it with the motion controllers, but it requires the use of a few programs: Virtual Button Box and Steam VR Wheel.
Virtual Button Box will let you set up button overlays that you can bind to any keyboard keys you want and gives you a few options for activating them with the vive controllers. You can drag, resize, etc all of these buttons. I use them for any non-time critical actions. It actually makes it feel like you are in a spaceship cockpit with a bunch of buttons around you can press to activate all kinds of things.
Steam VR Wheel has a few modes that lets you emulate different joysticks with a motion controller. There's an option to use it as a semi-HOTAS style stick. It works okay, but it's not amazing.
Alternately, you can use VoiceAttack to issue voice commands as well.
Personally, I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick (super cheap joystick that works well, not crazy expensive like the HOTAS) in my right hand and a motion controller in the left for activating Virtual Button Box buttons. It's the most immersive VR experience I've found yet.
Do you get sparkles in dark scenes as a result of the cable extensions? I bought a similar 25 foot optical cable and the 3.0 Active USB cable and most everything works fine except the sparkles and the Index camera. The camera looks distorted like it has a black fabric screen in front of the lenses. The cameras tests ok using WebCamTest. Have you had any other oddities that you attribute to extending the Index with your cables.
By the way, thanks for the post as it pointed me in the right direction for allowing my system to be in a different room from the playspace.
The optic cable I used was: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X4W61YP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just use camera tri-pods in my living room and it works perfectly and stores easily. Here is the link to them.
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-60-Inch-Lightweight-Tripod-Bag/dp/B005KP473Q/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=tripods&qid=1564697527&s=gateway&sr=8-3
Are you running the Vive through any kind of adapter? I often had problems getting the Vive to work because I initially had it going from the link box HDMI port to an adapter for Displayport.
I could get steam VR to work if I started it up immediately after a reboot but any more than 5 or 10 minutes after startup and I'd get a variety of errors including Error 400.
If you don't have a free HDMI port you might want to look into getting a mini DP to DP cable like this one
Also, HTC support loves to pass the buck to others. I'm surprised they didn't pass the blame to Steam though.
And if you don't want to drill holes in your walls, buy some of these . I have my lighthouses attached to these and they're perfect. I didn't want to drill the walls as we're in rented accommodation and I also don't trust my DIY skills.
basically what I am saying is that:
Cost of HMD with 8 inch 3000 PPI Display > Cost of HMD with 7 inch 300 PPI display + 1 inch 3000 PPI Display + Motorized Parts
I think you are underestimating how expensive pixels are.
A cheap 1080p TV can go for <$100 new, a cheap 4K TV (~4x the pixels) can go for maybe $500 ish new.
edit

Theater room can be a vr space as well, just buy a 50ft hdmi cable!
Maybe something like this https://www.amazon.com/Roberts-50-582-Gripper-Anti-Slip-Indoor/dp/B00J9Q32XS
I'm assuming you tried this style and it doesn't work? Worked well on my floors https://www.amazon.com/Maxy-Home-Non-Slip-Provides-Doormats/dp/B01H2L17JC
edit: links just for the pictures, I haven't used those particular products
Buttkickers? Haven't tried with racing sims yet, just using as a subwoofer alternative and its incredible, gives a placebo effect that a sub is playing while everyone around is asleep and vibrations really immerses you in music. Setting up was just disconnecting wires from a sub and connecting to buttkicker, other one runs on the second sub output my amp has. Im using these .
Cool design, if the floor really is the only place you can put them.
I'd recommend a camera mount and some adhesive strips. No mess, and can be removed anytime and re-mounted elsewhere if needed.

looks like it might work, one review says it’s a code violation in the US tho
I have the same chip and gpu as you and my VR performs just fine.

Edit: I read the rest of the comments - I think you've found the problem. Just in case it helps I use this to cool my cpu and have had no issues with it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FZHWFEW/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This particular extension was recommended by someone that has a Vive pre.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FTFYH0U
I can't find the original recommendation at the moment :/
No, it's actually a different type of subwoofer called a tactile transducer.
This one would have more of a kick than the subpac. I believe drummers use them attached to their stool during live performances to supplement their headphones so they can "feel" the bass drum kicks.
I used these. But as others talk about lots of vibration, I have experienced no perceptible vibration, noise, or tracking problems. But if I had to guess, these clamps would be fine if there were some vibration.
