Yes it will help, but you want EGCG, the most important molecule in green tea. I like this one from Now Foods. Many people use more supplements like Yohimbine, MCT oil, EC stack, naringen, forskolin, synephrine, all kinds of stuff for cutting, but if you're making good progress already you don't really need all that, especially at 18. I think EGCG would be a good addition with basically zero side effects, other than positive things like more energy and focus. You could also add some caffeine if you want, which would help too.

Sooo I'll preface this by saying that I shamelessly crib my vitamin/supplement regimen from my mom, and do little-to-none of the reading she suggests. But, as someone prone to anxiety & depression who (due to a separate chronic health condition) can't do prescription psychotropics, she's pretty exhaustively well-informed. Based on what I've retained of her advice, here are some additional mood impacters you might wanna look into:

-Ashwaganda: Taken at night. I didn't feel it did much for me, but my mom swears by it.

-GABA: Here's a specific lozenge formulation that I really like for acute anxiety. It also has L-Tyrosine, which I've never taken separately, but she does.

-L-Theanine: Taken in the morning, as like D3 it boosts energy. I do find it makes a difference for me.

-L-Tryptophan: Huge upgrade over melatonin for both of us. Melatonin gives me sleep paralysis, weird dreams and a sort of druggy hangover afterwards. Tryptophan has none of those downsides (tho of course YMMV) and has a mildly positive effect on my mood/general sense of wellbeing the following day.

-SAMe

-5HTP

-St. John's Wort can work wonders but be very cautious with it. Basically research, introduce and monitor it with the care you would a new prescription medication.

There's a book you might find helpful called The Mood Cure that discusses all of this in depth. Have I read more than 10-20 pages of it? No. But IIRC those 10-20 pages were pretty user-friendly and my mother the expert consistently refers back to it, so I'm recommending it anyway. Good luck!

Edit: Wort not wart.

D and fish oil in the morning - Vitamin D has an inverse relationship with melatonin. This means it helps you wake up and increase the melatonin to serotonin shift that happens every morning, peaking around 11am. Fish oils brain health effects would be optimized taking this time of day for related reasons and it's a fat too which helps vitamin D absorption.

Magnesium with lunch - just take it separate from the calcium which it competes with

Calcium with dinner - it's a natural muscle relaxant.

If you're taking Vitamin D you should really consider K2. Vitamin D is actually a pro-hormone and it increases free calcium in the blood stream. This is bad for various reasons. K2 will redirect that calcium from the bloodstream into teeth, bones and way from soft tissue. The K2 and D3 will work with your supplemental calcium in the most optimal way to support bone health.

These are both high quality

https://innovixlabs.com/products/full-spectrum-vitamin-k2/

or

https://www.lifeextension.com/vitamins-supplements/item02335/super-k-elite

Much of the research with K2/Osteoporosis used the MK-4 form at 15milligrams per day. If you want to try that I would suggest Thorne Mk4. I use 5 or 6 drops/day myself. If you do 5 drops this should last almost a year.

From what I can tell the supplements don't seem that bad. However, at least for the animal m-stack and gnc beyond raw re-forge they contain a lot of ingredients which can mess up with calculated desired results when taken together.

Are you taking a high-quality multivitamin? The only supplement your taking that is providing any essential nutritional value is that gnc beyond raw re-forge. From these supplements alone you are still lacking essential minerals like calcium. And even if you do take a good multivitamin you will still lack the recommended dietary allowance of calcium, magnesium, or even iron if you are not eating enough meat. It depends on your diet and what kinds of food you eat. If you want to supplement I'd suggest Calcium Citrate/Malatate, and Magnesium Glycinate. If you want these nutrients from food instead I'd suggest Greek Yogurt.

I would add some more supplements to complete the stacks:

Early morning and/or late afternoon stack:

the animal-mstack: one pak every day for 21 consecutive days and 7 day rest. So, three weeks on, one week off.

+
usplabs compound 20: 2 capsules with breakfast and 2 capsules 6-8 hours later with meal or snack. For best results, take one of the doses 30-60 minutes prior to workout.

+
gnc multivitamin sport or source naturals life force multiple

When building muscle it is very important for your body to rest so that muscle tissue and other parts can repair and build upon itself. The most rest you get the whole day is when you sleep. The more high-quality sleep you get the more effectively your body can repair itself and grow (e.g. growth hormone secretion).

Before bed time stack:

gnc beyond raw re-forge: one pack prior to bedtime

+
source natural theanine serene with relora

+
source natural calcium citrate/malatate

In the future I would buy

this magnesium and this d3+k2 instead. Cheaper and the magnesium's likely more effective.

You can take all three in the morning if you want. Magnesium isn't inherently sedating, it's relaxing.

The ones I would personally avoid is taking D or ALCAR at night, everything else is fair game.

If you wanna do D, K, ALCAR in the morning, and Mag at night, that's perfectly fine also.

Also if you're at all interested in taking a multivitamin instead, I'd recommend Legion Triumph (disclosure: I've had some input on it's design, not receiving any royalties or anything like that, though).

u/Otto-Didact · 4 pointsr/Supplements

Morton's Lite Salt is straight-up the cheapest, though least tasty way to get both sodium AND potassium, and you probably need both. For palatability you can add Mio or Stur or a similar flavor enhancer.

Electro-Mix is an excellent option if you need potassium in particular. It's reasonably tasty for a no-sugar option. (I strongly recommend staying away from sugary things like gatorade and powerade, as advised by Chase.)

Another option is LyteShow, though it is a much pricier option than the other two. Na/K balance is pretty good though, and it is a good option if you just want to be able to add "x drops to x amount of water" without too much thinking.

I would look into a magnesium supplement as well--malate, taurate, citrate.

I take Life Extension Foundation Omega-3 because I trust LEF implicitly, I wanted the best money could buy, and I sense there's a scientific justification for including olive oil extract. However, you've inspired me to do a little more research, and it looks like I could totally be saving a ton of money by using a less expensive brand without sacrificing the quality of the omega-3.. I could even double my dose and save a lot of money.

Check out this gem of an Amazon review...

I have read that 2-3g of omega-3 oil is a 'theraputic' dose, used clinically for the amelioration of some cardiac, neurodegenerative, and inflammatory disorders. I think the more omega-3 you take, the better, but I would hesitate to exceed 2g without consulting my doctor. According to researchers at Oregon State University, contrary to the general perspective that more is better, "excess amounts of omega-3 fatty acids can alter immune function sometimes in ways that may lead to a dysfunctional immune response to a viral or bacterial infection".

For me the orotate seemed to do what it needed to in around 2 months after that it seemed the side effects weren't balanced out by the benefits. I've heard similar accounts from more than one person. I took it for around 2 months give or take, started with a quarter of a tab and worked up to a full tab since it made me feel pretty spaced out if I took too much. There aren't many brands out there the one I found (and was reccomended by others) was by Advanced Research. My goal in taking it was to decrease anxiety and to improve sleep though oddly it shouldn't be taken at night since it can keep you awake. And I say oddly here because it definitely has a calming effect but isn't the sleepy kind, I believe it worked with giving be better sleep. I now take it occasionally when I'm feeling anxious and it works as I take it much like magnesium does only with a different feeling.

My father takes this stuff and loves it:

https://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Norwegian-Cod-Liver-Lemon/dp/B003B3P4PO

I tried a bit of it and it's true you can't tell it's cod liver oil but I thought the lemon flavor was pretty cloying. I can imagine you would still be able to taste it for some time after taking it unless you brushed your teeth afterwards (and maybe even then).

The only concern I would have is the type of vitamin a in the oil is highly absorbent and it's the type that builds up in your system. I don't know how long it would take to do so, but maybe taking it for awhile and then taking a break would be better.

u/sym3try · 1 pointr/Supplements

Here's what I am looking at:

  • Multivitamin (LEF 2-Per-Day Capsules)
  • Fish Oil (LEF)
  • Vitamins D + K (LEF)

I will probably pick up some cheap 5-HTP and Rhodiola form NOW just to try out.

I am wondering if I will be getting too much Vitamin D from this as the multi has 2,000UI and the D+K has 5,000UI... The multi doesn't have K and that D+K supplement looks pretty good, especially with the added Iodine... does this combo look like I might be overdoing it?

Dosing is an interesting issue when it comes to the K vitamins. For example, the amount considered "adequate" to meet our health needs is very tiny, in the microgram range. Yet in Japan, as you mentioned, doctors often use K2 in the MK4 form to treat osteoporosis, yet when they do that, the amounts are in the milligram range.

To put that into perspective, I believe in Japan they recommend 45 milligrams daily to treat osteoporosis. But the "Adequate Intake" or AI for vitamin K is 90 micrograms for a woman, 120 micrograms for a man. 45 milligrams is 45,000 micrograms. I mean milligrams is still a very small dose but for treatment levels it's still thousands of times more than what science currently considers "adequate."

Here's a side question. What's the largest supplemental dose of any of the K vitamins that you've been able to find? I currently use the Life Extension Super K complex: http://www.lifeextension.com/Vitamins-Supplements/item01834/Super-K-with-Advanced-K2-Complex It has a mix of K2 as both MK7 and MK4, plus it also has K1. I take that twice a day, plus a few hundred micrograms more in other forms.

The largest single dose Vitamin K in any form I've been able to find is Thorne Research in liquid form as K2 in the MK4 form. http://www.amazon.com/Thorne-Research-Vitamin-Liquid-drop/dp/B000FGWDTK

It's expensive at almost $65 a bottle. But cost per unit, it's still very cheap I think. Each drop is 1 milligram of MK4 K2. That's equivalent to 10 pills at 100 micrograms each. If you did a drop a day, the bottle has about 1200 drops so it would last a while. But if you wanted to do what the Japanese do and do 45 milligrams a day, the bottle would last only about 26 days at 45 drops a day. even at the 1 milligram dose, it's still way larger than the 100 microgram pills I've been able to find for K2 MK4.

Most K supplements are in the microgram range. The Life Extensions is the largest single dose I could find.

Have you been able to find any other large dose supplements of any of the K vitamins?

Meal frequency does not matter. If he wants to eat one or two meals a day, that is okay. What matters is that he is getting enough nutrients(vitamins, minerals, protein, calories) When the body does not get enough food, it slows down the metabolism. Go to the doctor ask for blood work for testosterone/thyroid/Vitamin D. At his age, either could be suboptimal for his health. Getting a sluggish thyroid optimized will make a huge difference in energy levels, same as testosterone. Optimally, you would want his testosterone over 700 ng/dl and his TSH(thyroid stimulating hormone) under <3. If you get his blood work and let me see it, i will tell you what i think. He needs to incorporate more animal protein into his diet. Amino acids found in food are essential for every single process in your body. Neurotransimitters like dopamine and serotonin(happy hormones) need amino acids to function properly. People underestimate the importance of dietary protein.

These are the two multivitamins i recommend because they contain the best, most bioavailable forms of vitamins and minerals. They are not expensive and are of really good quality. It is possible that your husband's multivitamin switched it's formulation to an inferior product. You can try these, but get that blood work done. It is very important, low testosterone and hypothyroidism will deteriorate his health as he ages. :

Wow the other answers here are annoying. Here's a RELEVANT answer since it's a SUPPLEMENT: Ashwagandha. https://www.amazon.com/ORGANIC-INDIA-Ashwagandha-Supplement-Capsules/dp/B003PGE98K

Been taking on a regular basis for 4 years to help severe chronic health issues which include(d) some of the worst possible anxiety. I also used to have thyroid imbalance and terrible adrenal fatigue which disappeared with this supplement. I used to take 4 caps a day for years, but now I take about 2 a day and not every day. Happy to answer more if needed. Lots of info online. Generally, things that take a little longer to "kick in" are going to have more steady effects, so that you will still have benefit when no longer on the supplement, or if only taking sporadically. Ashwagandha often has mild immediate effects, but it's over a period of a few to several weeks that effects become really obvious and positive. Check out the reviews and search for "anxiety." Best wishes.

Protein isolate is a type of protein powder. Definately don't cut essential fats or nutrients to replace with proteins. You want to focus on getting essential fats, nutrients, and protein while limiting carbs as much as you possibly can to achieve your goal (essentially a keto diet). You're gonna want some low calorie whey protein powder. This stuff should do the trick, but it will probably taste like sour milk. Disclaimer: if you are young (under 20), make sure you don't limit your caloric intake too much as this can hinder growth and development.

u/UserID_3425 · 1 pointr/Supplements

It has a lot of neurological effects, so it definitely could help. Plus, it's really not too expensive to try. Personally I feel better and sleep better when I take it, and I only take a quartered pill daily.

>methyl assist by pure encapsulations) because apparently it contains some special form of B vitamins

It's just methyl B12, P5P B6, and methyl folate. You can get something very similar from Jarrow for much cheaper so I would recommend switching over if you are going to continue this for the long term.

>I also bought it through his practice so I'm a little hesitant.

Pure Encapsulations is a great brand but this specific product is overpriced for what you are getting. I'm sure he put a bit of an up-charge in there as well for himself.

u/drogean2 · 3 pointsr/Supplements

be CAREFUL about taking any magnesium oxide, its the cheapest form of magnesium and the least absorbable - meaning it's basically a laxative and will give you liquid diarrhea REALLY easy

you really want the stuff that ends with -ATE , doesnt have the side effects

as far as multivitamin, you may want to switch to something with join suporrt like this stuff which is praised highly in the body building community. I take half the daily dose since i'm not an athlete.

on the same note i've heard nothing but good things about Cissus for join pain.

Another thing people say helps is circumin/tumeric, available in caps but you can just get a bunch of the indian spice at a grocery story if they have it

I agree with others that you should track first (chronometer.com) to see if you need the supplement.

Zinc should be balanced with copper. Look for 10-15mg zinc for every 1mg copper.

I take Now Nutrition Optizinc 30mg and also copper. For under 6 bucks I consider that pretty good. Jarrow also has it with a different zinc:copper ratio and one pill only has 15mg Zinc and is $9.50. So just depends on what suits your budget/needs.

I use a D3/K2 liquid from Thorne. That is a lot of D3 and K2 though, I'd be more comfortable taking a lower dose daily, but he's the doctor. Keep in mind that K is a blood clotting agent, so don't go adding large amounts without a lot of research.

http://www.amazon.com/THORNE-RESEARCH-Vitamin-Liquid-Health/dp/B0038NF8MG

As for magnesium, I recommend ionic, glycinate, or malate. 400mg per day is the recommended, but you can get your RBC Mag levels tested to see if you need to add it as a supplement. Most people are deficient.

It's been awhile since i've researched this, but about two years ago when i was looking for a Vitamin K2 supplement the Thorne Research - Vitamin K2 Liquid (1 mg/drop) - 30 ml product was by far the cheapest per mg. The bottle is expensive though (~$64 USD) but it has 1200 drops at 1mg of menatetrenone (MK4) per drop, so the daily cost (if you take 1 drop, or 1mg of MK4, per day) is only $.05 (5 cents). The Life Extension product that OP linked to for example is 20 cents per day (or 16 cents per mg of mk4+mk7), which is about 4 times more expensive than the Thorne Research product.

You know you can buy supplement methy B12 and folate ? I wouldn't inject anything I bought off the internet especially china.

Getting from a steroid website would be safer than China as those are peer reviewed on eroids.com

I'd stick with supplement methyl B complex rather than inject. Besides it isn't fat soluble so you'll only piss out anything your body doesn't use that day.

I have the MTHFR gene mutation so have issues with B12 so I take a methyl B complex and my sister has a deficiency despite taking regular b complex so I just got some for her too.

Yes, coffee is a fine way to get caffeine.

Beta-alanine, BCAAs and DMAA can all be found in pre-mixed workout supplements such as Jack3d (which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, BTW, so I hope you don't have to pee in a cup before a fencing tournament... BJJ doesn't test, however). There are a lot of discussions about which pre-workout mix is best, but they are all expensive and loaded with fillers such as artificial sweeteners. (BTW most have a ton of caffeine as well so if you go that route, no need to take extra). Each of these can be bought separately, however, which allows you to have better portion control and mix yourself. Just search on amazon. I use these: Beta-Alanine; BCAAs; DMAA

In other news, there's talk of DMAA potentially being banned because some people died from taking it, and it is not very well-studied, so take at your own risk (or stockpile it like the rest of us before it goes the way of ephedrine).
