I can tell you it works great as a desktop replacement because that's EXACTLY what I did!

I run mine with two external monitors using this DP hub:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HK8V5KE/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

...and I also have this USB hub:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IJU0K2Q/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1

...which has a built-in gigE port. I also picked up a 64Gb uSD card for a little expanded storage:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007WTAJTO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

On top of that, I picked up a 1Tb external USB3 HD from Best Buy for around $50, though I'm not actually using it now.

I of course have a proper keyboard and mouse attached. The only thing missing from the equation is the docking station, but that's pre-ordered.

Yes, the whole setup was pricey (around $1700 all-in for the 256Gb i5 model, plus $200 for the dock later) but it's allowed me to replace my desktop AND laptop that I sometimes used with one very portable and capable package. I'm VERY happy.

I use it primarily for various forms of software development, which tends to be more demanding than typical use... I can tell you it has performed flawlessly in this role for me the past few weeks. Everything I've thrown at it so far has worked as expected and with excellent performance. I've done some video editing on it too and that's been fine as well.

It's also not bad for the somewhat limited gaming I do. I still play the original Halo and Postal 2, but nothing more demanding. I've run all the 3DMark demos on it too and it perform well up until about two versions ago, so my take is if you're looking for games no newer than about 2-3 years ago you're going to be fine, anything newer might not work out as well (at best you'll likely have to crank settings down). If you want better gaming I'd suggest the i7 is what you want... better GPU in addition to the CPU bump. I originally planned to get that but I got impatient :) The i5 has been fine for me though.

For the Freedom Case: www.freedomcase.com/watch and tonce you have it a lot of trying out. I got myself a Wacom Stylus and stretched the loop on the Case to with the Cap in so I can now easily remove the Pen and put it back on without worrying much about loosing it, other then that I can't give more tips to the Freedom case it always deepens on how you use your Surface.

Microsoft Office what do you want to know? What is your use case? If you are short on money get a outlook.com account and you can use the awesome web Apps that get you quiet far and are great for teamwork.

OneNote Desktop - for Free (legal) for Desktop Use for Heavy Pro users (IMO)+ OneNote Windows Store App for just taking basic notes and touch/ Stylus use. Let me know what your use case is and I may can tell you more about it. I recommend getting the App for your Phone as well (WP user by any chance?) its out for WP, iOS and Androide.
/r/OneNote - I just leave this here

I mostly agree with the guy in the video. The biggest issue I've run into is the trying to work in Photoshop without a keyboard. I have a little 8 button on-screen keyboard that I've cobbled together to get me by. The option to remap the pen buttons would help a lot. Apparently that can be done with Auto Hotkey. I'll be looking into it soon.

I've also noticed that I have to press really hard to get a brush at full pressure. The HTC pen somebody posted here last week looks to be a little looser in that regard and I will be checking it out soon. ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LEKI0O )

There's some lag on strokes. Depending on the brush/brush size/canvas size it can be a little annoying. The Stumpy Pencil brush has some major lag on my desktop when it is set to a large size, so I'm not surprised that it tends to be pretty laggy on the SP3 too.

I use a Cintiq at work, and Yiynova on my Desktop. The SP3 holds up pretty well. It's not perfect but it's pretty good and it's portable.

The battery's good. I wish I had a second charger, but $80 is too steep at the moment. I picked up a bluetooth mouse because I don't like trackpads very much. I have a good size scratch on the back from carrying it around in my bag for less than a week. I have a sleeve now to protect it ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FF5JTH0/ ). I appreciate Windows 8.1 a lot more now.

I've never liked the "folio" style cases for any of my devices. I know they might provide more ding protection, but I'm will to take the risk and care. For my SB 2 15 I'm using this when I travel -

iPearl mCover Hard Shell Case for 15-inch Microsoft Surface Book 2 Computer ( MS-SBK2-15 Clear ) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079T12629/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ggieBbGCMSBYQ

Relatively cheap, good enough to protect from scratches (probably wouldn't do much for big drops like the UAG), easy to put on and remove, has small flip up legs at the bottom rear for a little extra lift and doesn't hide the nice design of the SB. Plus colors 😉!

u/AlexTakeTwo · 1 pointr/Surface

I haven’t tested the Ethernet speed, but I just got this USB hub with Ethernet for my Surface Pro 3 and I really like it: USB hub with Ethernet I got it for a travel adapter to expand USB and use wired network at the office, it’s a great size for travel and the fully detachable USB connection cable is an extra bonus.

u/ModRocX · 1 pointr/Surface

Mine SP4 lives in the UAG (http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Feather-Light-Composite-Aluminum-Military/dp/B016ATD48O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462397656&sr=8-1&keywords=uag+surface+pro+4) and occasionally comes out when I'm sitting on the couch surfing.

It's a great case - yes it'adds bulk but still way slimmer and lighter than my old laptop :)

(edit: and it get's a lot of positive comments regarding it's looks)

Cheers.

u/nmill11b · 2 pointsr/Surface

1- It's a convertible case.. you can use the flap to have multiple viewing angles in either landscape or portrait mode, but you can detach the flap and use it purely as a tablet; it even has a convenient handle for holding as such. It also has it's own kickstand when in tablet mode that has a slightly more intuitive viewing angle. The viewing angles and the kickstand are sturdy as well. I can take some pictures in a little bit if you want. I just kind of fold the keyboard into the flap and stuff it in my bag.

2- it's not heavy at all, especially if using it in tablet mode. The whole Case adds about .25 in to the overall thickness... about half that in tablet mode. It also does a good job of keeping the bezel free, so you can swipe from the edges just fine.

3- It's ventilated around the edges of the tablet. It does heat up, but my Surface heats up even without the case, and I can't tell any difference with or without it.

Here's the link to it: http://www.amazon.com/MoKo-Rotatory-Detachable-Companion-Microsoft/dp/B00B0O16XK

I don't think it says anything about a pen loop in the specs, but I can assure you there is a pen loop.

I have a Surface 3 as well and the first thing I bought with it was a 128gb microSD card. This one to be exact:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q57S62?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I've had both the Surface and the card since Black Friday and I've only had problems with it not staying mounted once, which was the same day I got it. I use my Surface every day. I keep all my music, movies, extra documents for work, and things like that on it and have not had any problems with anything. I don't use it for gaming, however, so I can't help you there. But, so far so good otherwise. Maybe check that out!

Also, I'm curious. What kind of games do you play on your Surface 3? I bought it for work and not for games, but I'm about to fly from Korea to Louisiana soon and some gaming options would be nice. I've never been into PC gaming, I'm a console peasant. What's the best way for me to look into what I can do with my Surface 3?

u/jbarke15 · 1 pointr/Surface

Gotcha. Sounds like I need to be working with NTFS then. I have an iPhone, so compatibility with Android devices isn't an issue.

These are some of the cards I'm looking at. Which do you think is the best fit for my needs? (I'm in mobile... I hope these links work)

SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter, Black, Standard Packaging (SDSQUNC-128G-GN6MA)

SanDisk Click to open expanded view Extreme PLUS Micro SDXC UHS-1 Card, Black, with Adapter (SDSQXWG-128G-GN6MAMA)
This one is quite a bit more expensive than the one above ($100 vs. $40). Is the extra performance worth the extra expense?

This one: http://www.amazon.com/AOC-e1659Fwu-16-Inch-USB-Powered-Portable/dp/B00CMKOVMO

Honestly, I hardly ever use it. The pic quality is a little lacking. Its ok, but its 1366 x 768, which next to the SP2 is a little... odd looking.

Yes, it can run with only one USB cable, but as you might suspect, everything has a cost. This is no exception. It runs the battery down pretty quick. I haven't run any tests or anything, so I can't give you figures on how much juice it pulls.

I also purchased a cheap 24" monitor. I walked around a store and physically picked up each monitor and found the lightest and cheapest one. I figured I could ditch the bulky stand, McGyver a lightweight stand, and take it with me if I needed it. The only limitation would be the need for a power source.

My concern was that the SP2 screen would be too small for the kind of dev work I do. Honestly, this hasn't turned out to be the case. Sure, its a small screen, but I seem to have adapted just fine.

I do use the 24" LCD from time to time at home.

I'm actually more interested in using Surface RT/ Surface 2 as extra monitors for my SP2. I know its possible, I've actually done it, I just need to refine the process when I get some time.

u/davidtwilcox · 1 pointr/Surface

Sketchable is mentioned a lot, and you may also trial Mischief and Leonardo to compare before you commit to buying one of them.

OneNote UWP and OneNote 2016 are both great. I recently installed Nebo to try - haven't gotten far, but seems interesting. Plumbago is another note taking / sketching option I've liked.

I travel with mine and don't need the Surface Dock, but do want extra USB ports and ethernet. The Anker USB/Ethernet extension is an option that gets recommended often. You may also want to grab a mini display port to HDMI cable, too. When I travel, I also take a work laptop and need an external mouse for it. I bought a Logitech MX Master and use the USB dongle on the laptop and connect to the SP4 with Bluetooth (or vice-versa if the SP4 battery gets low). It is a big mouse, though - if size matters, the Microsoft Arc Mouse Surface Edition is an obvious choice.

As for other applications, it depends on what you do. I have Wikipedia, Wolfram Alpha, Netflix, Spotify, Readit, GOG and Steam installed. I'm a developer, and have Atom, Git for Windows, and Bash on Ubuntu for Windows installed, too. And since I am also an amateur photographer, I have Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

Actually I can help with the 15" one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079T12629/ref=emc_b_5_t

I would 100% get this if it came in the 13" version because of the smooth top, it also comes in a lot of different colors too! Thanks for the luck I'm gonna need it lol >u<

hmmm how about ebay, you can use a debit card with PayPal, just don't buy the sd card off ebay because it will be fake but an adapter should be safe to buy on ebay, you should be able to buy the sdcard locally, just buy from a reputable dealer in greece. Hello from a Greek living in Canada.

You can also go to a small computer shop in Greece and ask if they can order one for you, might cost more for their effort, but if you don't have a debit card/credit card then that's your only choice. Do you have any friends with a credit card/debit card/paypal? if so then ask them if they can order it for you.

I'm not positive exactly what you mean, but I've been using this pen for a week or so, and it works basically the same way the original pen does (the only thing different is that it doesn't have the button on the back that launches OneNote). There wasn't any setup required for me - i.e. I literally popped in the battery and began drawing and writing straightaway.

Main differences:

  1. The tip is a bit harder, which I think is good, as my SP3 stylus's nib began to wear down after a month of use.
  2. The stylus itself is shorter and doesn't have that 'clip' part.
  3. Again, no OneNote button.

    Hope that helps!

OneDrive
Have it on your SP4, your phone, and make sure you can access it from your computer. Leave all your necessary school files and even draft files on it. If you need to print somewhere or your Surface dies when you're using it your work will be ready to continue on another device.

HDMI/VGA adapter
get a set if you do regular presentations

USB Hub
1 USB port will not be enough

Zagg 10-Key Bluetooth Number Pad
As an Accounting major this was the best purchase I made, see my review and link to purchase here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/2x3pwu/zagg_10_key_bluetooth_numeric_keypad_first/?context=10

UAG Case
If you're the type to get Otterbox's/LifeProof/UAG cases for your phone, definitely get this for the Surface: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Feather-Light-Composite-Aluminum-Military/dp/B016ATD48O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483771384&sr=8-2&keywords=uag+case+surface+pro+4

Bluetooth Mouse
The Microsoft Arc mouse is a great compact mouse. Do not get a USB mouse you will regret using the port. Careful not to get the USB version of the Arc mouse btw. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=microsoft+arc+mouse+bluetooth&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amicrosoft+arc+mouse+bluetooth

Screen Protector
I got a matte one for my SP3. If you plan on using the pen then this might not be desirable to you. I tried using the pen for notes and using OneNote for my first semester but it became useless as I type faster than I take notes. A Matte screen protector always feels good and you will rarely ever have to wipe and clean the screen.

I am using this, and it works well with my original Surface Pro.
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00BVUQZZ2

The charcoal version should be good as well.
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00BVUR07Y

Though untested, this one seems to be compatible with the Surface Pro and Pro 2:
http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/stylus/bamboo-smart

Generally, most pens that work with Galaxy devices with stylus work with Surface Pro 1 and 2 since both uses similar Wacom's technology. However, I wouldn't always count on it. Note that Bamboo Feel styluses do not come with an eraser.

If you aren't sure, there's always the original Surface Pen that works well.

I don't use a Case or a Sleeve so I can't comment on that, But for a USB port I use this Amazon USB 3.0 Powered Hub. I also have a StarTech Gigabit network Adapter that works Great! I've tried several different External Controllers(I assume you mean Game Controllers) and the best I've found is my PS4 Controller. It connects to the SP3 and works with out any real setup. I also Purchased this last night to carry it in (it wont be in for a few days so I can't comment on the quality) STM Alley Small

u/zeththedarkmage · 2 pointsr/Surface

Only recommendations would be getting a Wacom Bamboo Feel stylus. They are much heftier and have a much better pen feel than the regular stylus and a Freedom case. The freedom case makes up for all the angles you lose by not having a surface pro 3 while looking really nice and protecting the easy to scratch back of the surface. They both completed my surface pro experience and I can't recommend them enough.

u/Cei34 · 1 pointr/Surface

So I found your review on Amazon. So this pen works with the SP2, right? So far I only have the Bamboo Feel Pen and the Fujitsu Pen. I prefer the Wacom pen for precision and accuracy, but it lacks a second button and an eraser. Have you had a Wacom Bamboo Feel pen before? If so how does it feel compared to the Wacom UP-911E-02A?

P.S.: Thanks for sharing btw. Gonna get this for my SP2 when I can.

I was looking in the same issue of having a usb that is both externally powered and usb powered. i know its amazon brand but if this works out well, then this might be the best one for the price.

u/moravian · 2 pointsr/Surface

I use a SP1 i5 and 4GB of RAM as my daily driver. I don't use the pen much but it works great with Win10.

To increase the battery live you can just attach one of these.

u/devil_yager · 2 pointsr/Surface

Good thing because the one the other poster suggested wouldn't have worked for a Surface Pro device - that one is specific to the Surface 3 (non-Pro).

As far as USB hubs go, the problem with wanting to run an external drive via a USB hub is that the hub itself typically has to be powered, reducing its portability. It might be easier for you to use a Bluetooth-enabled mouse like Logitech MX Anywhere or Surface Arc Mouse or Razer Artheris - basically any wireless mouse that doesn't depend on a dongle to work.

If portability doesn't matter to you, then maybe AmazonBasics 4 Port Hub would work. It's cheap, powered and has tons of positive reviews.

u/jon_tech9 · 2 pointsr/Surface

Like this Anker? Looks like a great idea. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Ethernet-Network-Notebooks/dp/B014ZOJX7W

I use the microsoft Sculpt Comfort Mouse, bluetooth. No issues with it.

u/catsRawesome123 · 1 pointr/Surface

Ok, I know you wanted trackpad but I like this keyboard - the keys have the same feel as the SP4 keyboard (which I love!) but are more raised for easier typing. It's bluetooth keyboard + mouse combo.
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Designer-Bluetooth-Keyboard-7N9-00001/dp/B00UPKMVCU

u/robsell · 2 pointsr/Surface

I have a little bit to add to this conversation. When docked and using 2 single MDP->HDMI adapters 1 into dock and 1 into SP3 I never experienced this issue. I thought I'd be smart and get a 3 port startech adapter. http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MST-Hub-Mini-DisplayPort/dp/B00JLRBC7S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452608223&sr=8-1&keywords=mstmdp123dp

Now I am seeing the same issue as you plus sometimes it just refuses to wake up and I have to hold the power button down to get it off completely.

Docking and undocking doesn't seem to work as well as it did prior with the individual adapters either. I keep using the startech in hopes that an update will come and resolve these issues.

u/kiwikish · 1 pointr/Surface

This Microsoft Keyboard has excellent reviews. Though so do a number of different keyboards, it really depends on what functionality you're looking for (number pad, key spacing, etc).
I actually have a full size USB keyboard that I wouldn't mind throwing into my backpack. With the amount of space I save with the SP3, a full keyboard really could be useful. And you'd look hella weird if you pulled it out in class or something.

u/idlehand79 · 1 pointr/Surface

I use https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Gigabit-Ethernet-Converter-Network/dp/B00IJU0K2Q/ and its great for travel and when im in the office.

Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard help as well if you feel the the need.

u/anaharae · 1 pointr/Surface

I'm using the Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard. It's bluetooth and works great, but its just a regular keyboard. I brought the Microsoft Designer Mouse with it. They are both low profile and are can easily slip into my purse or bag, they both are travel friendly. I've decided to use my SP3 as a home laptop though, and buy a S3 to take with me on the go.

This one is $71, alot cheaper than the rest.

Thanks Dan. Right now I have 2x Dell UZ2315H connected using a Mini-DP to DP cable, and also the Surface Book display as a third display. Those solutions there look...confusing? Couldn't I just get something like this and be ok?

That's what I used on my surface pro 1 until the release of the power cover. I found mind on sale for 20 bucks. Its a solid keyboard, and the cover it ships with can be folded to act like an impromptu kickstand, which is great for phones or small tablets.

This one from Amazon has 4 3.0 ports. It is also powered (optional) but still fairly compact. It's even in stock right now which it has not been for a while. Comes highly recommended and is a good price (currently $19).

u/prc2 · 4 pointsr/Surface

I think you may have to go with the surface pro 1 (the RTs don't have stylus input, and the Del venue is too small imo). You can get refurbished surface pro 1's for around ~$400 on ebay I think.

Out of the box, however, the note taking experience won't be particularly great due to the not-so-great calibration of the pen and the pretty bad pen that's included.

I highly suggest buying the wacom feel pen (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Microsoft-Surface-tablets-technology/dp/B00BVUQZZ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404214200&sr=8-1&keywords=wacom+feel), its $40 more, but it's rubber pen nib adds texture so it doesn't feel like you're writing on glass, and I find the cursor on the screen to track the wacom feel stylus better than the stylus included.

Next I would do the 273 point calibration, yes it's a lot, but it makes things oh so much better: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2171198
Also look though the wiki since it contains some really nice hidden gems (how to ad block on metro IE, DPI scaling, etc.)

After dropping mine and smashing the screen, I ordered one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M2UK8A8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

It is bulky, but I use mine out in the field to do sound measurements, and it gets thrown around a lot, taken on planes, etc, etc. Definitely would recommend this case for brutal users like myself. Also the case is really well designed with regards to airflow and access to IO ports. Source - I'm based in the Middle East and it's never overheated.

Senior biomedical engineering student, starting medical school this summer...

Get the SP3. You will not regret it. Best purchase I've ever made! The month after I got mine, 4 classmates sold their laptops and did the same because they were so jealous of how I was able to take notes.

SP3 + pen + OneNote is a borderline unfair advantage for students and it's a beautiful thing.

Just invest in a good case. I'm pretty careful, so I've stuck with a skin and been fine. If I had kiddos, I'd get one of these and call it a day.

I understand the money for repairs, but I take solace in knowing that all my notes are in one drive, synched automatically by OneNote, so even if my computer spontaneously combusted, I could take my wife's macbook and not miss a beat.

u/blastcat4 · 1 pointr/Surface

If the SP3 pen is too soft for you, you can get this:

http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008LEKI0O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=27O8Z602HE9FN&coliid=ILGP8JZP8Z8MD

It will work with your SP3 and has a hard pen tip that will not wear out nearly as fast as the SP3's pen. Its super cheap price makes it a great back-up pen, but it doesn't have the button on top to activate OneNote.

u/vohk · 2 pointsr/Surface

I believe any comparable N-Trig stylus will work. Same technology, just like the previous SPs could use any Wacom styluses of the same vintage.

I've seen references to people enjoying this one for example, but I'm sure there's plenty more.

This is where I gave up: http://edwardsh.in/keyboard%20cover/2015/02/23/probing-a-surface-touch-cover

That's too much for me. I was using the Designer keyboard, which is BT and awesome, except that the Fall Creators Update changed the way it sleeps so that instead of a multi-hour (I'm guessing) timeout, it went down to ~5-10 minutes, which means I frequently started typing and lost the first 4-5 characters. After a month of searching for a fix, I gave up and threw the $100 keyboard into the "worthless" pile to be recycled. If you don't mind a larger keyboard, and manually waking it every 5 minutes or so, it's a fabulous device - every bit as good as the SP keyboards.

There is a device - a BT connector - for the SP 3 keyboard. It's no longer made because it sucks. https://www.amazon.com/MICROSOFT-885370628494-Wireless-Adaptor-Cover/dp/B00FFIN8SS Not only does it suck on the SP3, for which it was made, but it doesn't even work on the SP4 typecover, afaict, though it was flagged as compatible in the store (when it was sold). I purchased on and, after having no luck, I called MS Surface support, and they said it didn't exist. After 10 minutes and dictating the MS URL, the CS rep admitted that it did exist. She then said they had one right there in the room, so she "went and tested it" and then came back on the phone (after 3 minutes) and said it didn't work with their SP4 so it was probably incompatible.

Any bluetooth keyboard will work. Of course whether they're any good is something else.

The Mobile Wedge Keyboard is Microsoft's own third party keyboard.

If you're talking about the case, This is the one I've seen

Btw if you want a cheaper one, while searching I saw some more cases with their own stands. The stand wasn't metal like this one tho, it was like a typical iPad stand where it folds to hold the device up. Just search for "surface pro 4 cases" on Amazon im sure you'll see it

Love this device. Battery lasts forever. Occasionally have to snap it closed then open again because the scroll sensor gets stuck, but you can't beat it's portability, comfort, and performance.

I use This case, it works really well.
I'm a mechanical engineering student and take written notes on my Surface Pro every day in class.
The different positions it lets you prop it in make such a big difference. Also being able to remove the cover flap is nice. Pen loop and space for swipe in gestures around the screen are also big pluses.

The keyboard has a nifty cover thing that turns it off when its covered and back on when you take it off.

While it doesn't have the magnetic connector nor the pocket clip, this pen functionally is better than the stock Microsoft Pen for the Pro 1 and Pro 2.

And much cheaper by Amazon price comparison.

u/sin-eater82 · 2 pointsr/Surface

Personally, I would not use a USB stick for always connected storage.

What sort of files are you storing on it? Are you really going to notice a difference in the 130 vs 78 read speeds (write speeds are a wash)? If you're regularly copying a lot of big files, it would be notably faster. But if you're playing music off of it, storing word files, pictures etc., it's probably not going to be noticeable at all. It will just be faster on paper and in tests that have no practical use.

I use one of these that I got for about $30-35: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-microSDXC-Standard-Packaging-SDSQUNC-128G-GN6MA/dp/B010Q57S62

For me, honestly, it's less about battery life, size, etc. I wouldn't even get to the point of considering that stuff. I just really don't think I'd notice much difference with faster read speeds for day to day use. So why spend money to just tie up my only USB port if I'm not going to see any real world difference?

the type cover doesn't have bluetooth connectivity.

You can buy a 3rd party bluetooth type cover clone keyboard but it won't work connected via the Surface Pro pins or you can buy a standalone bluetooth keyboard that will not fuction as a cover.

Microsoft used to make a bluetooth adaptor that can be connected to the type cover, but they discontinued it. If you can source one that might be an option.

u/TheBuxtaHuda · 1 pointr/Surface

So, by your stipulations, your only option is to buy new monitors that support DP MultiStream but that's not cheap.

You're not going to find an adapter to power multiple displays that does not hook up to USB or external power. I don't imagine access to multiple screens is common on-the-go, so I don't understand not wanting a dock.

What I'm trying to say is, you're going to have to compromise on one of your requirements.

u/MarcStew · 3 pointsr/Surface

No, bad deal. Yesterday I bought an SP4 i7 8GB 256GB for $1090.

That's $90 more for an improved CPU, 4 more GB of ram, and 128 more GB of storage. Check Amazon, prices may still be low. I'm taking mine to the Microsoft store 30 minutes from me when it arrives tomorrow and adding on Microsoft Complete for another $150.

Seeing as how this is a thing, I don't see why they couldn't make something similar for the Book or just implement it. The Book is already so expensive though so any niche functionality is going to be cut to save costs.

I also imagine that the adapter didn't seel very well, so it wasn't worth it for Microsoft to develop one for the Book.

Another route would be to add this functionality to the Surface Dock, but just make it require a physical connection? (Clipboard to Dock to Keyboard).

u/Tobimacoss · 1 pointr/Surface

No, I didn't explain properly.

Check out the kickstand on this portable monitor.

https://www.amazon.com/AOC-e1659Fwu-1366x768-Brightness-3-0-Powered/dp/B00CMKOVMO

If you have a triangular kickstand pop out from one of the tablets, then you can basically turn the two screens into one giant portable monitor or kinda like a surface pro.

Then use that same keyboard via Bluetooth sitting in front of that large screen.

The upgrade from i3 to i5 is minimum $200.

So you can get:

i5 with 128GB = $1000

OR you can get a 64GB SD card with the i3 model, thus having the same amount of storage as the i5 model, for $840.

I don't disagree with you, but what is the use case of carrying around the dock? I have the SP3 dock primarily so that I have a place to plug my SP3 into when I get home and not have to dig out all of the cables and string everything back together. I've used this rugged case for the past year: UAG Rugged Case. Pros: I could probably crush someone's skull with it if they attacked me during my commute. Cons: heavy (14 oz), the joint for the built-in stand is kind of flimsy, heat is not dissipated like it needs to be and the battery drains faster than normal. Looking at the other posts, I'll probably get a screen-protector and maybe a lighter case.

I find myself taking my SP out of the case quite often because I like the way it looks and the full range of positions with the SP stand vs the case's stand.

My thoughts:

  1. I'm not sure there are many laptop cases out there capable of accommodating a 22-inch monitor.
  2. A stand for that size monitor would likely be not only heavy, but wide and difficult to tote around.

I've got this one but honestly, I never use it. It sits on a shelf in my office.

It works fine on my SP2 with only a USB cable (both power and video). Haven't tested it with my SP3.

And it sucks the hell out of the battery.

But it works.
