I know you said you're listening to the main novels via audiobook, but I'd just like to mention that the comic book adaptations do a great job of clarifying the backstory. The first 30 issues all take place prior to The Gunslinger, and cover both the material from Wizard and Glass as well as other aspects of Roland's backstory which are only mentioned or hinted at in the novels. What's more, I don't think anything in them is really a spoiler for the further novels (there's a short flashback in Wolves of the Calla which the comics also incorporate, but it doesn't give anything new away to know ahead of time). The first 30 issues as well as a ton of bonus materials are available in a great hardcover omnibus edition; here's an Amazon link, though I believe it can be had for closer to $65 on eBay. It's close to a thousand pages total, and the bonus materials in the Companion book seem really cool too though I haven't gotten around to reading them in full (though those are probably best saved for after finishing the main novels, since it includes things like a world gazetteer which includes things not encountered until the final book).

I'm not usually a big fan of comics, but these are really well done, and the Omnibus editions have a great value for the price if you like the Dark Tower series, and especially if you're interested in seeing more of Roland's backstory fleshed out (including things like the Fall of Gilead, which you won't find elsewhere).

Totally worth it. It's a must have for any big fan. It adds all kinds of extra content that wasn't in the books. It's not written by King, but fully endorsed by him. It was developed in part by the work of Robin Furth, King's personal research assistant. Apparently when King started writing the last three DT books, he hired Robin to research the first four and write the concordance. Robin and some other people produced the comics which include stories referenced or not included in the books. The wind through the keyhole was actually dedicated to her and the people at Marvel. Also, the artwork is amazing.

Fantasy-gunslinger epic The Outlaw King was directly influenced by Dark Tower, and recently Stephen King himself gave me a pass to use direct DT references to Beam Guardians, so from the third book on, it's gonna be a lot more 19 up in here. The series has a pretty enthusiastic fanbase, and the third book recently won a 2014 Stabby Award from /r/Fantasy.

Heads up, the UK Publisher Hodder & Stoughton has all 8 Dark Tower novels and the Complete Concordance as a matching set, and on amazon it would actually cost me less to have the H&S set shipped all the way from the UK than it would to preorder this set. That's the 7 main books, Wind Through the Keyhole, AND the concordance, whereas I'm pretty sure this set available for preorder is only the 7 main series novels. I saw the H&S books in person in China and they're beautiful, so if this set doesn't look super beautiful or have SOMETHING better than the H&S set, I'm getting the H&S set instead. The H&S books are all available on amazon.co.uk as well as eBay.

Here are links for books 1-7, WttK, and a copy of the concordance.

I asked King how old Roland was in my interview in The Dark Tower Companion.

His answer: I don’t know any of these things. Your guess is as good as mine, really. My assumption is that something happened to Roland after Gilead fell and it has to do with the Beams and time getting funny and that he really has lived a more or less normal life, that it’s time itself that’s gone off the rails. That’s all I know. The only other thing that I can say is that my concept of the book when I started, when I was very young, like 22 years old, probably mutated to something that was a little less mythic as time went by.

It's complete and available on amazon, I got my copy around Christmas time. It covers everything from The Gunslinger Born through The Battle of Jericho Hill, which as far as I know is everything.

Supposedly there's another run being made of The Gunslinger, but I haven't seen it yet to be able to confirm anything, and even if that is the case, it's basically a different series. The omnibus covers all of the prequel stuff.

Here's an Amazon link to it: http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Tower-Omnibus-Stephen-King/dp/0785155414/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368494339&sr=8-1&keywords=dark+tower+omnibus

Enjoy!

There's a very nice box set of paperbacks that was released this past December. Matching books, nice box artwork, and actually affordably priced.

There is a paperback set that's sold in the UK/Europe that you can order on UK Amazon(or whatever EU country you prefer). You have to order each book individually, though. It came out before The Wind Through the Keyhole, so that one just kinda sits off to the side. Nonetheless, the seven books look great together.

u/BluRayCharles · 1 pointr/TheDarkTower

This sounds like a big commitment, but if you've read the books you won't want to mess around. Just go with this. You won't be disappointed.

You're looking for the ones from this set, right? Amazon probably has them all individually (not necessarily new), you just have to look through all the different editions they offer. Might be easier just to buy the set and have extra copies of 6 and 7. Of course, that set doesn't have Wind Through The Keyhole, so if you're getting a new set you could also look at other pre-movie complete sets.

Let's get some things straight.
It's not just book 1, 2 and 3.
If you look at Product Details is states that it has 4720 pages.

These covers also seem to be new. Not movie tie-in either. Im guessing this based on my new find.l
I've found covers for books 2, 3 and 4 on amazon which wi be released December 27. The letters of SK's name seem to be in line with the new SK covers from Simon and Schuster. The release date is also very close to the boxset.
The Gunslinger is on amazon as well, but without a cover. Books 4.5 - 7 I didnt find.

As for a matching set, there was a paperback boxed set released.

https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Tower-Boxed-Set/dp/1501163566

As for hard cover, you'd have to buy them individually and they don't really run together well as they have varying art styles. Not to mention that finding a good hardcover of The Gunslinger will be quite costly.

u/brendanrouth2 · 11 pointsr/TheDarkTower

Is this the new set they're doing for the film? Do you know where your gifter got if from? I really want it myself!

EDIT: I think I found it.

u/yzzin · 1 pointr/TheDarkTower

Those are the UK editions I think, I'm not 100 percent on that but I know I got them from Waterstones and they're on Amazon over here:

u/DashCat9 · 2 pointsr/TheDarkTower

I have no idea....though I've seen them around.

I'm fairly certain that there isn't a complete matching set of the Hardcovers available, though there is a seven book matching set for paperback on amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Tower-Complete-Gunslinger-Wastelands/dp/1604322667

If you're looking for a complete set of first editions, it's possible...though you start getting kind of expensive once you go back to the first three.

u/noirdesire · 2 pointsr/TheDarkTower

They can be published by different companies. The only entire matching set Ive seen is a UK publisher Hodder

u/dstrauc3 · 1 pointr/TheDarkTower

part 1 and part 2 but drawing of the three hasn't been collected yet.

u/vectorman37 · 3 pointsr/TheDarkTower

I actually ended up getting the matching version through this exact amazon link

I know that it doesn't display the "correct" matching cover which is quite annoying. It seems that Amazon plays fast and loose with the book covers, and YMMV.

u/mrgreen55 · 4 pointsr/TheDarkTower

Ok i figured what the Hell going on know so for the Omnibus book it's only come's with

  • The Gunslinger Born

  • The Long Road Home

  • Treachery

  • The Sorcerer

  • Fall of Gilead

  • Battle of Jericho Hill

Which = the The Dark Tower part of the comics that what the wika say's to get the others parts it's the Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Omnibus Slipcase that comes with

  • The Journey Begins

  • The Little Sisters of Eluria

  • The Battle of Tull

  • The Way Station
