Not a 1950s text, Denis Dworkin uses "British Cultural Marxism" to refer to The Birmingham School in his 1997s book. Douglas Kellner in this 2013 essay. Jordan Peterson in this recent interview.
...so it does refer as I said to; The Frankfurt School, The Birmingham School and E.P. Thompson... and their critiques of mass produced capitalist culture. This isn't an outdated or one sided association of the term. To understand the meaning of the term, there needs to be some understand of what The Frankfurt School were on about.
