I went to a community college and studied Electrical Engineering Technology and learned enough to get me started on learning about amps. I also found a job in manufacturing which pays well but wish i had gone for regular EE because of the stability of those job and ease of finding new work.

This series of videos will unlock the mystery of tube based guitar amps. It's Uncle Doug and he's the best on youtube for this. He starts with the basics and explains it all so well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5SSKX74DKg

But they don't teach anything at all about Tube electronics anymore. You are still on your own to figure that stuff out. You could very easily learn about the basics of electronics online. after that buy this to get in depth. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0956154522/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0

>one pot was set to something like 120mA and the other to the proper range

The schematics I have show one pot in the bias supply, or in the earlier ones no pot. I'm not up on the year-to-year variation of orange amps but I wonder what changes may have been done and not correct on your amp.

>the message boards and fb groups I've been scouring

Acknowledging the obvious irony of the statement, internet wisdom is often worth what you pay for it. The variac approach seems to be a bit of a solution in search of a problem to me. As /u/buzzbotbaloo mentioned, it would be pertinent to know your actual line voltage before assuming you can correct this problem by lowering the voltage. Something like a cheap killawatt meter would tell you exactly what you're working with and help you rule out possible issues.

>sent me and the amp home with an extra fuse.

Interesting approach.

I read in Van Halen Rising that on their first arena tour, EVH was using a Variac and going through a set of power tubes every night. That was in the '70s when tubes were plentiful and cheap.

I've never compared Variac to a power soak/attenuator, but pretty sure the latter would save you on tubes.

Lots of good information here, I appreciate it.

I'll check outside tomorrow and see if i can find anything leading to the ground. The only thing I saw last time was two metal cables which were bolted down to the pipe system near the water heater/furnace, and that's in the basement, but I didn't look outside.

The isolation transformer I've been using is this Tripp Lite IS250. It did literally nothing, or if it is, it's not discernible to me.

I've tried plugging just the amp, sans cables/pedals/guitars into the power outlets and it still makes the noise. It's relative to the master/gain/volume switches, so when you turn them up the noise gets worse. And worse again on the dirty channel. Strangely enough I did attempt to lift the ground just to test it on one of the amps and it made a slight difference, the other two it made no difference.
