I like a good hand-crank one. My Porlex Mini is ceramic burr and perfectly fits 26g of beans so it's ideal for me and getting the one shot. I bought it for camping but now I use it daily because it's actually a pretty great feeling to grind it yourself. Been using it every day for almost a year with only good things to say about it. It was $50 on Amazon, plus shipping. There's also a larger variety.

As for electric ones, I think you'll be looking at one in the $100-150 range like the Baratza Encore to get something that will be consistent as well as not wear out in a year like many other grinders do after the first few hundred uses. There are better versions of the Baratza that are good enough to be used in small Cafes that may better suit your needs. Do some searches in r/Coffee and there's probably some good choices there. I found for my use (Moka pot/Aeropress) that my hand crank works best and that I don't need a big grinder. The few sub $100 that I have owned never lasted longer than a year, and were inconsistent and eventually simply unable to work at all due to the lower quality grinders cutting the beans rather than truly grinding them.

I will also put in my +1 for Caffe Fantastico beans. The Ethiopia Kaffa Forest beans are wonderful.

Grocery stores I'd say

  • Kicking Horse
  • Level Ground
  • Saltspring Island

Used to be you could by a disc repair thing in stores, it would use a type of ceramic to fill in deep scratches and some sort of device to grind down the plastic a tiny bit? Probably Best Buy and Walmart have them.

Edit: Amazon has some that are cheaper than local

That's why I'm saying amazon.ca

They ship some of their products to Amazon warehouses and they're sold through Amazon so you get free shipping over $25 and 2 day if you have Prime.

Little more expensive, but still cheaper than shipping

Agreed, but the threat is a reaction or a symptom of the real problem. The homeowner is clearly frustrated with cats crapping in their yard - people are required to clean up after their dogs, but cats are free to destroy property? Perhaps the solution lies in consideration and cooperation.

I'd love to find an excuse to build a curfew pet door. When the cats come in for dinner in the evening, the door could have its one-way latch set and the pets remain indoor for the night. There are many other solutions available as commercial products.

Of course, this kind of solution only solves a piece of the issue and the homeowner will likely still have to chase off other cats if there are any.

We all have responsibilities, gardening citizens and pet owners alike.

For the short term, get yourself an on-tap water filter for your kitchen sink. This way you can at least clean out water for drinking and food preparation purposes.

John Daly is going to be in town. Maybe he can get on stage and play his new album? https://www.amazon.com/I-Only-Know-One-Way/dp/B003ME3EZ4

The cables are cheap! Doesn't need to be a full on lock. The u-lock should connect your back wheel, frame, and the thing you're locking to. The cable is just to connect your front tire if it has a quick release. Something as simple as this should work (and not break the bank!).

A visualization, just in case.

Get some snap traps. I've taken out a few with one of those plastic ones with the big jaw.

You'll never eliminate them completely but you can keep their numbers down.

Have you read The Curve of Time?

If I had 6 weeks off, I would go to some of the places mentioned. Not all of them are on the island though.

Driving around looking for parking represents ~1/3rd of all vehicle miles travelled.
