I see that you’re new to Oklahoma. We’re a Koch fiefdom, they’re headquartered out of Wichita Kansas which is just a bit north of us. That means running as a Republican gets you a lot more money. In 1996 there was a wholesale shift to the right as a reaction to Bill Clinton’s Presidency. Many “Democrats” suddenly became Republican or started voting Republican. There are many reasons why but traditionally Oklahoma Democrats were socially conservative farmers that supported fairly conservative Democrat politicians. The Republican Party focused heavily on these voters for 40-50 years now and it’s been successful. For a better understanding I urge you to read this book, I believe it’s widely considered to be the Republican “road map” for victory.

So I was in a thread about John Kasich talking with people about how Moderate Republicans have gone the way of the dinosaur, when I had a pretty worrying thought.

If Cory Booker ends up leaving his Senate Seat to be President or VP, there is actually one Republican who might really give us a run for our money in the open New Jersey Senate seat.

Does anyone remember Governor Whitman? Moderate Republican (actual Moderate, not 'conservative, but who speaks in complete sentences') who was NJ Governor.

She's been extremely ( like, louder than some of my liberal friends ) vocal against Trump, and literally wrote the book on the extremist takeover of the Republican party - a full decade before Trump. She was appointed EPA administrator by George W Bush, but was replaced after she actually wanted to use the environmental protection agency to protect the environment.

If there's one Republican with the credentials to say "The Republican Party has gone off track, we need to return to a reasonable center", it's her.

Long story short - if she decides to return to the public sphere, I think she could give us a run for our money in the New Jersey Senate. On the other hand, she's 72, so I don't know that it's that likely.

The book's a little old now but there's a great book called Get Out The Vote that shows the most effective way of reaching voters.

If you want to understand conservatism, I recommend reading some academic books about the ideology, rather than following them online. This will explain how fundamentally unserious it really is.

I can recommend this one to start
