Arthas is VERY good. I also really enjoyed Beyond the Dark Portal.

The best part about Blizzard game is that they work for both PC/MAC, something i wish more devs would do.
If you want a zoomed out history of the world, go with Chronicle. So far only volumes 1 and 2 are out. https://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Chronicle-BLIZZARD-ENTERTAINMENT/dp/1616558458
You should play Warcraft 3. It still holds up gameplay-wise and is the best way to consume the immediately-pre-WoW lore.
I would say read Rise of the Horde then Lord of the Clans then Day of the Dragon then the War of the Ancients trilogy. Those are the best of the books in my opinion
I started with the warcraft archives and was happy. Its 4 books in one and each is pretty solid. Not really linear but each book is good in its own right. Richard knaack and christie golden are both in it. I like knaacks writing style.

Reading the war of the ancients trilogy now.
Doesn't matter when you read them really, but OP could mean the Movie Novelisation, rather than the Durotan prequel to which you refer.
