Shane the film is by far my grandfathers favorite western. We have watched it together many many times. It was definitely my entrance film into the genre.

Around Xmas time I found this TV series on amazon and decided to pick him and myself up a copy. After opening it he said he had never heard of it but was very excited to watch it.

He watched all 17 episodes over a 3 day period and said he really enjoyed it. It took me a bit longer to get through but I found each episode to be very enjoyable. Great cast, definitely a fun watch. Has anyone else seen this series? I do recommend it if not.

Edit: Amazon link if interested here

Kinda off-topic, but I really enjoyed this book about Wyatt Earp.
Really well researched, and draws on fact not fiction or legend.

Without a doubt, he was a remarkable guy living in remarkable times.

But as with everyone, he was certainly not without his flaws either

Bill Pronzini has some western mysteries but I haven't read any of them. On my list. Here's one:

And people seem to like the Holmes on the Range series, but again I haven't read them.

I've read a few Walt Slade books by Bradford Scott and they kind of have the structure of a mystery.

Hope that helps. I think the Western Mystery could be a cool genre if more people tried it. They seem hard to come by.

Love your username - I was at game 7!

I've got a Western coming out on October 1st. I like to describe it as Romancing the Stone meets Blazing Saddles. It's on preorder on Amazon. Check it out--you might find it fun.

Check out 52 Weeks, 52 Western Novels by Scott Harris & Paul Bishop for great recommendations and an overall review of the genre.

There's a graphic novel called Hawken that's really good.

This is one type of book I need to get more of, but I have a pretty extensive collection of western history and that's a huge gap missing from that history. That said, the final book in the Time-Life Old West series (the entire series is incredibly invaluable) covers the end of the West and the rise of Hollywood. A bit dated, but the book was published as the Western was fading away.

Also, the Oxford History of the Old West has a large section (this book is already massive and heavily recommended) about Hollywood.
