That's an awesome price, I paid $265 for mine and I've been very happy with it. I'm planning on upgrading my machine but I want to see if GPU prices stabilize first. I couldn't wait any longer for VR though. If you're interested in lens protectors I can tell you these in a 42mm fit great, just be careful not to leave bubbles when you apply them. I'd also suggest getting rechargeable batteries as the controllers tend to eat them.

I bought a Vive Link Box to use as a signal/power booster in the middle, and it works great. This cured all my dropouts and audio glitches, as well as giving my system a Bluetooth radio.

This setup works great:

  1. Vive Link Box
  2. Vive Link Box Power Supply
  3. 12 ft Power cable extension for Vive Link Box
  4. 10 ft USB 3.0 extension cable
  5. 10 ft Amazon Basics HDMI cable
  6. Wire wrap to keep everything tidy

Make sure you power cycle the Vive Link Box whenever you plug or unplug anything into it to for it to reinitialize and detect the headset.

I really wish there was a more elegant solution, but so far this works the best for me.

I'm not 100% sure on the rotation, want to say yes it still did, but don't want to give you any false info - I'm pretty sure it was not all or nothing, rather just alot of strange behavior - but it sure sounds like the same problem. The difference was night and day - once i switched, I now never lose tracking - for instance if I go out of headset sight, i don't notice because the controllers always pickup instantly - point being you'll know if you do something to get it corrected, it won't be "maybe it's better"

I should mention i went overboard to solve the issue - got rid of all wireless gadgets hooked up to the PC - keyboard/mouse (went wired), wifi off, onboard BT off, etc - but i can't confirm any of that made a difference since i did this all at once when i got the bluetooth adapter. But after doing all that, i've said in other posts tracking went from maybe 4/10 to a 10/10. Before it worked often enough to make me think that's just how it was.

I would def lose the extension, eliminate any variables.

for reference, here's the dongle i picked up - it might reveal something despite the fact yours is approved and should be fine.

Had the Odyssey for about 2 weeks now. Great device, only issue I've been having is the left touch pad gets stuck in VRChat sometimes (software). The cord is a little shot too, but I hear that's an issue with all(most?) headsets. Fixed that issue by getting a HDMI/USB3 extender.

I don't really have anything I can compare it too since it's my first VR headset. So I'll just boil it down to: Is it worth $400? Yes, for me Gorn, Fallout VR, and SuperHot VR make it worth it. Also recommend getting some rechargeable batteries, first set lasted me about 2 days.

Don't forget to buy a Bluetooth dongle if you don't have one. Bluetooth is required for the controllers.

u/thegenregeek · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

> How reliable are the controllers compared to the Vive?

Fine, I've had no issues. Been playing Skyrim with my Odyssey+. Comfort wise about the same.

> Do you have a source for a cheap replacement controller?

Unfortunately the controllers aren't sold separately. Only option is new headset or eBay. YOu may be able to use standard WMR controllers, but same problem.

> Could you show me what extension cable I'll need to purchase?

You shouldn't need one, that said I've used these with my WMR headsets

> How about rechargeable batteries? Do you have a suggestion for a good set of rechargeable batteries and charger to use with the controllers?

Any AA batteries should do. I have no recommendations myself.

> Do you have a link for a reliable USB Bluetooth 4.0 that I should pickup?

Odyssey+ comes with built in BT. OG (Original Odyssey) does not, it will work with any dongle you have. Though its best to have it be line of side (and not under a desk or something. I used this dongle for my demo machines.

> I was told the Odyssey may require some kind of light blanket or cover??? What's the deal with this?

If its what I think you mean, there's a small gap on the side by your eyes for the O+. Which can let some light in. It's generally more noticable on the O+, the OG doesn't really have the gap. VR Cover makes face padding you can buy.

> Is there anything else I should know about this system prior to getting it?

In order to play SteamVR games you need the Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR pluggin. Make sure that where ever your play area is has some things for the tracking cameras to see, along with adequate lighting and nothing to reflective. (Don't try and play in an empty room with nothing but beige carpet and walls and no light).

Here is a copy/paste from a response I had to someone else about this:

Here's why I just bought Li-on over NiZn, specifically these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F27PK2M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GyjUCb59Z0M6Y

over these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WTRSTAU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zyjUCbSDJQDTC

First of all, the PK Cell has the title in their listing wrong, it's not 2500mAh, they are 2500mWh. 2500mWh @ 1.6v = 1562.5 mAh

So is 1500mAh vs 1562.5mAh (assuming they actually pump out that long) draw.

Charging time on the Li-on =1.5 hr
Charging time on the NiZn = 6(+/-)hr

Recharge cycles on Li-on = 1000
Recharge cycles on NiZn = 400(?)

Voltage is slightly better, yes, 1.6 vs 1.5, but again, I consider this a draw and not worth the trade off.

Voltage output is steady on both till they are pretty much empty, so draw there.

You need to use the special charger for the PK Cell. The charging circuit is built in each Li-on, so you can use any phone charger or usb port. It still comes with a 4way cable. This also offers another advantage in that the individual cell with get the voltage it needs and you will know it is actually fully charged. The PK Cell well charge 2 batteries at a time, so if you have a bad cell, you will spend more time recharging as you figure out which one it is. No indication that charging is done, so I don't know if it actually stops applying full voltage or not.

Each Li-on individually will turn green when it is done. You can charge any amount you want simultaneously.

They cost the same (factoring in the cost of the charger), but the PK Cell are cheaper by themselves

Having said all that, I just bought the Twarf and had a bad cell right out of the box. Luckily, Amazon is amazing and I had another box at my door the next day. (Still have to return the original set they sent). They second box charged up fine and looks ready to rock.

I've been reading a lot about it since I'm building a new PC capable of VR and I always wanted to try it.

It's a really good VR headset. The strong poing of the headsets is the price since is more than 50% less than others with the deal (at least here), that's a steal and for an entry VR headset it's great and probably the best (imo).

Edit: Game.es also ran out of stock 3-4h after my last reply. Now they're at 250€ for whenever they get new stock...

Edit2: Amazon had new stock. They ran out of it really soon but now they're selling the headsets with the deal for the upcoming stock too so if you're interested you could probably get them with the deal. Link

I use a 15ft active USB cable, 3ft displayport to hdmi adapter, 15ft active hdmi cable, and a link box in between. With my Lenovo explorer. Works perfectly. Holds 90fps. And no static or anything. I use the bluetooth on the link box.

USB is the harder one. You'll need a very good mobo or an extension card (at least PCIE x4 to support the needed bandwidth/power). For the cable, an active extension cable worked for me - a passive cable would not.

Edit: I used this cable, but it does still give me static if I try to use headphones. Otherwise it works great.

I stumbled upon one review on amazon for WMR (Lenovo Explorer) and someone (user nicknamed Ed) mentioned the tracking issue of their 6dof controllers but he said that he solved the issue of shaking controllers by switching the bluetooh 4 dongle to a USB 2.0 port...so perhaps the USB 3.0 is the issue here for many people and they are not aware of it.

*

This is the link to the reviews page of Lenovo Explorer :

"Controllers tracking poorly and jumping all over the place in all applications. This was solved by moving the Bluetooth 4.0 dongle I bought from the USB 3.0 port I had originally used to a USB 2.0 port at the front of the computer. It should be noted that Microsoft actually recommend using a USB 2.0 port for the Bluetooth, so this is expected behaviour, but I mention it in case it may help someone."

I ended up putting some protectors on the lenses, I used the ones that protect watch faces from amazon.

If this is the one it is showing you then yes it should work.

Also keep in mind you will need a USB 3.0 cable and HDMI Cable. I wouldn't go longer than 6 feet although I know some people have had luck with 10. Also a small bonus the Vive Link Box has Bluetooth in it. I have not validated that as I have the O+ and it has bluetooth built into the headset for the controllers. I have read other people have use the BT in the Link box fine however.

u/mooneater916 · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Thanks for the fast response and advise! Yes i have read this doc. To hopefully bypass the issue I installed a PCIe USB hub. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPIMJEW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1_).

I think its adequate for the needs?

u/LonelyRedditor6969 · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I just use Amazon basic extension cables lol that's it and I have never had an issue. I have the same headset as well.

If I did it again I would recommend this cable.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077T83RSV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_z1lXBb82SS4R5

u/field_marzhall · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

Yes you absolutely can but you will need the following:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XT1Z9TF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The headset will not work without a monitor so a ghost display is the best/fastest solution. If you only have one hdmi port then you will need a displayport to hdmi adapter.

I recommend changing your password to a pin so its easier to log in.
After you are done putting the pin put the headset on and wait for it to turn on. The use your PC with the desktop app ion the cliff house.

Not sure how true this is, but in another thread someone suggested getting batteries with 2500mAH + since it would make the lights brighter and track better.

u/Jynxmaster · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Very nice, I didn't even know they had 3000mIH batteries.

I know you already have an extension cable, but when I switched out my old extender for one with a single booster it really improved my tracking: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/TheRoyalBrook · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I've seen reviews that the people who are selling the refurb often don't check the product and you'll get things like two left hands, two right hands, busted looking headsets etc. I'd say be careful if you do that, I almost considered it but imo, spend the extra 40 or so bucks and get new.

The Lenovo one which has a higher FOV is 200, and it's what i got recently and enjoy it

u/LukeMurphey · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I have glasses and found that they indeed fit nicely in the Odyssey+. They didn't fit in an Oculus CV1; so the Odyssey+ definitely has more room that some headsets.

I too was worried about the lenses contacting each other. I wound up using watch face protectors. They have no discernible impact on the visuals; I even tried looking for a difference with just one installed and couldn't see a difference.

I also agree on comfort. Wearing the Odyssey+ used to cause a bit of pain if I used it for a while. Oddly enough, it doesn't anymore. I suspect the foam softened after being used for a while.

u/Crashboy96 · 3 pointsr/WindowsMR

Sure.

This is the pack with the charger I purchased. The charger is normally $20 so I figured an extra ~$6 for 4 Eneloop Pros is a good deal.

For extra batteries, I just purchased these Amazon Basics high capacity AA rechargeable batteries as they have relatively similar MAh and are decently priced.

Edit: fixed second link

u/atocci · 5 pointsr/WindowsMR

I can confirm that the AmazonBasics USB 3.0 6ft and HDMI 2.0 6ft extension cables work perfectly with my Acer headset and laptop.

u/Bluftoni · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

This 15 foot HDMI works perfectly for me. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01D5H92EE/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Paired with this 15 foot USB—
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00AA0U08M/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Only needed to add a powered USB hub as I was getting that screeching audio issue.

u/kylebisme · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I'm pretty sure 3.5 x 1.35mm is just a hair too big for the power adapter as I ordered these extension cables the other day and the male end doesn't quite fit in the linkbox. I've borrowed a universal adapter from a friend which works but the plug size isn't labeled so I just ordered this one which is advertised for use with the linkbox but doesn't mention the plug size either.

Also, for USB I'm using this 15' cable, and for HDMI this 25' cable which I already had from a previous setup. And since it seems power from the USB port can be and issue, here's the powered USB card I'm using.

u/Lord--_--Vader · 3 pointsr/WindowsMR

Battery life is a real problem indeed, something Microsoft should start optimizing for the next generation. A proper removable high capacity nihm accu, integrated charging circuit and optimized low power/consumption electronics.
Windows MR started out as a low cost VR platform; it's time step up your game, Microsoft.

In the meantime i can recommend Blackube 1.5V 1500Mah batteries or similar:

https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Batteries-Battery-Li-ion-Long-Lasting-High-Capacity/dp/B07D9K2H9H?th=1 )

They last pretty long, almost no voltage drop until empty. Recharge time is OK (micro usb 1-2 hours)

u/inimicae · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I've been using this 6' cable with my Odyssey after seeing it suggested in a thread a while ago. Been working perfectly for me.

u/PostmanPat47 · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

If you use a powered hub out of the screen for the headset it should resolve that issue, something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-2-5A-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGH80
Then you can probably still use the extender.

u/callezetter · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

It boots fine into Mixed reality portal if you set it up to start, and remove the need for login. But you also need a headless adapter for you GPU so it thinks there is a monitor attached. Like this one from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Headless-Display-Emulator-Headless-1920x1080-generation/dp/B06XT1Z9TF/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523461599&sr=8-3&keywords=headless+hdmi There are other versions too, and for DP etc, if you need that. They all remove the need for a real monitor tho. If you need to control it later, you can setup tightvnc for it, and use any other pc to control your kb/mouse/monitor-less VR-pc.

u/sykoKanesh · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Just so we have a good list, this is the one I purchased and it works flawlessly so far: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VWEK4IG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/groundbog · 6 pointsr/WindowsMR

Yes the batteries that was packed with it last less than a day for me. Maybe I could have wait a bit more since the charge meter in the cliffhouse is not very accurate.

I bough Panasonic Eneloop Pro with their charger and they last very long. They worth the price.

Exactly. I'm using this 16ft cable along with an additional 1.5ft male to male cable (in order to have a male connecter on end to plug into vive link box):

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My setup is like this
PC > 1.5ft USB 3.0 male to male > 16ft active USB 3.0 Extension > Vive Link Box > Odyssey+

Works flawlessly. No issues whatsoever. Only thing is you have to power cycle the link box after you plug the Odyssey in otherwise it won't be detected.

At the time I got mine, people were recommending these Panasonic Eneloops: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JHKSL1O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They've been good to me so far.

u/Dysthymike · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I got all that from a comment that I can't find from a thread months back. The commenter also suggested Wire Wrap which I also use and has worked well. It did take forever to get it on, though, and there was a lot leftover.

Also, other people here have mentioned having to turn off the Vive Link to get it working, I just unplug the Power Supply Adapter from the Vive Link every time I'm done with it and that seems to work. I also disconnect the HDMI/USB/Power Supply Adapter from the computer, the Odyssey+ and the power supply as well when I'm done, instead of leaving anything plugged in.

u/ChuckBevitt · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I had the same issue. Turns out the problem was that the (GTX 1070) GPU doesn't see the Odyssey headset as a connected monitor - when you close the lid the GPU sees no monitors connected so it powers down. Since the design of the laptop predates WMR, you can't really blame Acer. The fix is to connect an HDMI dummy plug like they user for bitcoin mining rigs (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XT1Z9TF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) This tricks the GPU into thinking there's a monitor connected and it stays powered. Since my laptop only has one HDMI port which the headset is using, I connected the dummy plug via an HDMI to Display Port adopter (the laptop has one of these too). Works like a charm for me!

u/Archerofyail · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I'm using Amazon Basics USB and HDMI extension cables and they work fine for me

u/CaptainLenahan · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

So I experienced this with my Samsung Odyssey+ even after purchasing a usb 3.0 10' repeater cable that was said to work well with the oculus. I ended up grabbing a usb 3.0 powered hub that i connected to the repeater cable and plugged the powered hub in to a regular power outlet and the issue was resolved. My current issue is that the HDMI cable I used to extend it by 10' caused severe signal disconnects and visual "noise".

Here is the equipment I used:

This happened to me a few times after getting extansion cables for my hmd(O+). I read a powered usb hub can fix it, so I got one off amazon. It seems to work. I also had my usb microphone plugged into the hub after I got it, and for whatever reason my pc wasn't recognizing the mic, so I stopped using the hub and plugged it directly into my pc(along with the HMD). I got the static sound again, and plugged the HMD back into the hub, and hasn't happened since, so I'm pretty sure its not a placebo.

u/AlianAnt · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

It comes with a HDMI and USB 3.0 permanently connected to it. If you're wanting extenders, I bought these off Amazon

AmazonBasics High-Speed Male to Female HDMI Extension Cable - 6 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D5H90L4?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

AmazonBasics USB 3.0 Extension Cable - A-Male to A-Female - 6 Feet (2 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014RWATK2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

And I use this Bluetooth adapter Microsoft reccomends

Plugable USB Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy Micro Adapter (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Raspberry Pi, Linux Compatible; Classic Bluetooth, and Stereo Headset Compatible) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009ZIILLI?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Keep in mind you'll also need a USB 3.0 port. They're colored blue. The HMD also plugs into this, in addition to the HDMI.

u/PumkinSpiceTrukNuts · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I am using a vive linkbox for both my Rift and O+ (and Explorer) and it works great. In fact the USB going into the linkbox is a daisy-chain of non-active 3.0 cables plugged into each other to make it long enough to reach the top of the shelf it's stuck to. You do need a power adapter but don't need to buy the $20 one amazon suggests. I use this one. I have noticed that I have to unplug the Rift sensors while using the Odyssey or I get constant connects/disconnects of USB devices (doesn't seem to be the O+ disconnecting as I don't get any glitching while playing, but it's annoying to hear).

u/EHP42 · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I had a similar issue with everything going janky and then the headset shutting off with a blue screen. I bought this powered USB3.0 hub and everything seems to work well now.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077T83RSV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I just got the 6ft vesrion of this yesterday and played for about 3 hours and no issues at all.

I ended up having to buy a usb 3.0 pcie card as the headset wouldn't work at all on the ASMedia 0.96 drivers.

These are the cables I used:

I mean, I think it COULD work, but I'll just wait for the next gen with wireless. I bought one of these, so I'm good to go with that as soon as it gets here.

You can get HDMI and USB 3.0 cable extensions that review well to work with WMR headsets, unless it's the overall weight you're worried about, in which case some hang it from the ceiling in retractable pulley system.

I was nervous reading about issues with extending the cables of my O+ that I had just got since my pc is behind a wall in another room. I got mine to work first try by going:

PC 3.0 USB <- Male- USB 3.0 10 Feet -Female-> <- Male USB Powered Hub Female-> <-O+ USB

GPU HDMI <- Male HDMI 2.0 10 Feet Male -><-Female HDMI Coupler Female -><-O+ HDMI

I got the usb 3.0 Male/Female cable from a local store. The rest from amazon. The usb hub is plugged in with 5V power supply and the extension cord HAD to be plugged into the hardwired male cable on the hub. It does not work by plugging the extension and odyssey into the 4 hub slots.

There's also these.

Only 81% the power density compared to the batteries that OP mentioned (2250mWh vs 2775mWh), but similar low weight and they each have a micro usb port for charging.

Don't know if they have it in the UK but something like this should do. It's what I got and has no problem.

By this https://www.amazon.com/2500mAh-Rechargeable-Batteries-Battery-Charger/dp/B00WTRSTAU/ and move on with life knowing you have this problem solved.

Half my freaking posts lately are telling people to do the above. It just works and solves all the battery problems.

I'm actually using a USB 3.0 PCIe card already, have been since i got my WMR. This is it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPIMICA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

During trouble shooting i'll often try using my mobos 3.0 port which doesn't change anything.

I haven't tried reinstalling the usb drivers and I'm honestley confused by it. Not sure what a controller is, am i reinstalling the driver for my USB 3.0 PCIe expansion card? Or for the HMD?

Amazonbasic rechargeables are enough, but for NiMH you must get a decent charger - something with delta-T or delta-V charging i.e. the Panasonic BQ-CC17 that comes in a 4 pack with eneloops, or most of the ones out there with LCDs.

The bad quality ones will either undercharge or slowly roast your batteries via overcharging because they don't have ways to detect batteries being full.

Otherwise Li-ion AAs are more expensive per battery but work good for WMR because they output a flat 1.5v until they die.

Every USB port and GPU will function differently. The USB wattage draw is high enough to drop the voltage some across the cable. Some USB ports start out at 5.2-5.3 volts and they work better. Most "front" USB 3.0 ports already have a 18-24 inch extension and don't perform as well. The 10ft cables below work perfectly for me on a high end x299 rig with the 5v USB 3.0 and 3.1 that tap off the 12v bus. On another rig but the same odyssey + Headset the sound cuts out.

These are the best for for me.
Cable Matters USB 3.0 Extension Cable in Blue 10 Feet https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008219UMI/

If the 10 foot has problems for you the 3ft or 6ft might work. Try the Cable on Each USB port first. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008219UMI/

AmazonBasics High-Speed Male to Female HDMI Extension Cable - 10 Feet https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D5H91KE/

Also the controllers need high voltage batteries. If you use really good Panasonic Oneloop Pro's even they can give problems. When those NiMh's get down to about 1.2-12.5 volts (Even with 60% charge left) The odyssey can trigger a low battery warning and switch to 60hz mode degrading performance. https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-BK-3HCCA4BA-eneloop-Pre-Charged-Rechargeable/dp/B00JHKSL28/

The way around this is to run 1.6V NiZn Rechargeable cells instead. https://www.amazon.com/2500mAh-Rechargeable-Batteries-Battery-Charger/dp/B00WTRSTAU/

not even close, actually - I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers. I have never ever seen it for less then 350 from a canadian retailer. It's no surprise we don't have a microsoft store here in Windsor, because people would bitch about prices constantly. The sony store here was closed earlier than any other I imagine for the same reason.

I'm a firm, firm advocate if a price has ever been x - ANYWHERE - , it will always be x and you should never, ever pay more no matter where you're from unless you live in an incredibly remote place and the logistical costs can be explained.

Compare that to ordinary everyday amazon US prime offers:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0764GKZ15/ref=olp_twister_child?ie=UTF8&mv_style_name=1

And tons of those vendors ship to Canada. It's painful to me to have to not patronize canadian retailers because suppliers refuse to give vendors reasonable prices up here. I usually go without unless I can pick it up from another canadian who benefits directly from my hard earned dollars.
