While there exist many pre-New 52 Wonder Woman trades, sadly most of them are out of print these days. But here are a few suggestions of things that are still easy to find:

The Greatest Wonder Woman Stories Ever Told - This trade collects a wide variety of Wonder Woman stories from different eras, from her second appearance (All Star Comics #08 isn't collected) through an issue from 2001. Collected here are: Wonder Woman: Spirit of Truth OGN (from Paul Dini and Alex Ross), Sensation Comics #1, Wonder Woman volume 01 issues #028, 099, 108, 163, 178, 214, and 286, and Wonder Woman volume 02 issues #020 and 170. While I don't necessarily agree that these are the greatest stories, it is a nice introduction to many different eras of Diana's career.

Chronicles - These trades are inexpensive, full color collections of the original Golden Age runs of Wonder Woman and Sensation Comics. Though DC never collecting all of Marston's original run in this format, these three books are a great, fun read, and a nice time-capsule view of what Wonder Woman was like when she first came into being. These three volumes collect All-Star Comics #08, Wonder Woman v1 issues #01-05, Sensation Comics #01-18, and Comic Cavalcade #01-02.

  • IST (All available, all below cover price) - Volume 01 / Volume 02 / Volume 03
  • Amazon - Volume 01 (Currently over $30. Sometimes the price drops down, but I'd suggest getting this from IST rather than Amazon) / Volume 02 / Volume 03

Diana Prince: Wonder Woman - Silver Age stories. Diana gives up her powers as the Amazons retreat from the Earthly dimension. Diana stays behind on Earth. Though there is some controversy about this run, and a lot of people really dislike it, I love it. I think it's a lot of fun, and it shows that Diana is just as caring, and willing and able to help people even without her powers. My only issue with the run is that it ends abruptly. These four volumes collect Wonder Woman v1 #179-204 (issues 197-198 were reprints of earlier issues in this run, so only their covers are collected), The Brave and the Bold (1955) #87, Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane (1958) #93, World's Finest Comics (1941) #204, and The Brave and the Bold (1955) #105.

  • IST - Volume 01 / Volume 02 / Volume 03 / Volume 04
  • Amazon - Volume 01 / Volume 02 / Volume 03 / Volume 04

George Perez Omnibus - This omnibus collects the beginning of Wonder Woman volume 02. After the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wonder Woman was rebooted. Her origin was stream lined, her villains and supporting cast were given make overs, and she was introduced to the world. The omnibus collects v2 issues #01-24 and Annual 01.

A lot of people complain about the level of exposition and general wordiness of Perez's run. I for one think it's a terrific, fun read. However, if you'd rather check the book out without shelling out the money for the omnibus, you can get the awesome Gods and Mortals HC, which collects issues 01-07, as well as the Wonder Woman animated movie from 2009 (which is well worth watching).

Odyssey - This was the final Wonder Woman story arc before the New 52 started. While I have railed against this story in the past, time has softened my view of it. It's not great, but it's an interesting elseworld's style take on the character, which for some reason was shoved into the main continuity. I find that the less a person has read of Wonder Woman, the easier it is to enjoy Odyssey. These two books collect Wonder Woman issues 600-614.

  • Amazon - Volume 01 / Volume 02

This is just a few suggestions based on what is still available. Most other runs out there, unfortunately, are collected in trades are that out of print (not entirely, usually just one or two books are out of print). Luckily, DC seems to be recollecting some of the more popular runs.

Later in March, Wonder Woman: War of the Gods is set to be released. This trade will collect the four issue War of the Gods mini-series and Wonder Woman v2 issues 58-62 for the first time. This story arc was the crafted by George Perez to celebrate Diana's 50th Anniversary. It also served as the final chapter of his run on Wonder Woman.

In May, the Wonder Woman by Mike Deodato TPB is coming out, featuring the story arc where Artemis takes over as Wonder Woman. Though the Amazon page says it's only collecting volume 02, issues 85, 0, and 90-93, it's actually set to collect all of Deodato's run, 85, 0, and 90-100.

In July, a new Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka TPB is coming out, with one more to follow collecting Rucka's entire run.

I'll try to help clear up some terms for you. Lol the golden age of comics is basically any comic made in the 1930s-50s. The silver age is any comics made from 1955-1970. The new 52 started in 2011. It is when DC ditched all of its old titles and started over with 52 new running comics. The new 52 recently ended this year and they started new again and called it rebirth. Trades are collections of comics bound into a book so that they are easier to collect and less expensive typically.

The book you're asking about could be a good place to start because you might read a story in there you enjoy and then you can find which comic it came from and expand on it but you wouldn't get exposure to anything current.

Personally, I would start by reading Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman run. It has beautiful illustrations. It has a lot of really cool ties to Greek mythology and the mythology of Wonder Woman herself. The story is her fighting her personal demons and how she came to be. It really makes you understand why she is Wonder Woman, her emotions and what makes her tick. The way he portrays Wonder Woman is perfect. She is honest, brave and so morally sound. It's a great read.

Also, the sensation comics that came out in 2014 are super cool. Each comics is a collection of short stories by different writers about Wonder Woman. Most of them are super upbeat and sometimes funny. And the art is always awesome.

Good on you for starting with Perez!

Which Rucka are we talking about? Because both runs are absolutely fantastic, but his second run (Rebirth) is utterly fantastic, and definitely the closest to the Wonder Woman seen in the film.

I'd also strongly recommend:

The Legend of Wonder Woman, Vol. 1: Origins - A fantastic reimagining of Wonder Woman's classic origin.

– [Wonder Woman: The Golden Age, Vol. 1] (https://www.amazon.com/Wonder-Woman-Golden-Age-Vol/dp/1401274447/) - 40's Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman: Earth One, Vol. 1 - Superstar writer Grant Morrison's take on the character.

– [Wonder Woman '77, Vol. 1] (https://www.amazon.com/Wonder-Woman-77-Vol-1/dp/1401263283/) - If you like the campier elements of Wonder Woman.

A few people in these replies are recommending Greg Rucka's stories. I agree, but I'd like to give some clarification on his two different runs and how they are collected.

Pre-new 52:

  • His run begins with the graphic novel The Hiketeia (2002), then continues into Wonder Woman vol. 2 #195–226 (2003-2006).
  • Easiest way to get this run is via these volumes: Vol1 (includes The Hiketeia), Vol2, Vol3 - the last collection was only published less than a month ago!
  • The Hiketeia is good, and it has Batman in it, but personally I think Rucka's main run on the numbered comic issues - with all his embassy supporting cast - is better.

Then after the New 52 launch (with Azarello's run), he returned for the Rebirth issues:

  • Wonder Woman vol. 5 #1-25; Annual #1 (2016-2017)
  • These have a weird structure where the odd-numbered issues tell stories in the present day ("The Truth" followed by "The Lies") and the even-numbered issues are an origin story ("Year One" and "Godwatch").

Or if you don't want to navigate runs of that length, and just want a nice straightforward story told in a single book: just go and read JLA: A League of One!

Since Wonder Woman has been around for such a long time, there's kind of something for everyone in her collected adventures.

I personally love her/identify with her because she genuinely seems to want to do the right thing and care for everyone, but she has had to deal with a lot of morally unsteady issues in her pursuit of doing what she feels is right. She has to come to terms with the violence and hatred in human society and it shakes her faith from time to time but she tends to always sway back towards a positive outlook on humanity. She tends to be optimistic, fierce, genuine, and confident - all things I want to be.

You could absolutely start with the Rebirth run. It's only 14 issues in (15 tomorrow), so it will be easy to pick up. I would recommend Eyes of the Gorgon, Paradise Lost, and Love and Murder. I'm sure the other comments will include some quality stories as well.

I love everything Greg Rucka's written. I'd start with his 2016 run "Year One" that is the current origin story for Diana. Super accessible and a good starting point for jumping in.

Then go read his older stuff
, especially "The Hikatea" which is my all time favorite WW comic. Marvel recently collected his whole run into two books, so it's pretty easy to find.

Finally, finish with Rebirth to get the current WW.

H.G. Peter has always been recognized for his work on Golden Age Wonder Woman, so I find this article odd.

Incidentally, if you want to see Peter's art at its best, check out Wonder Woman: The Complete Newspaper Comics, which is a collection of the Wonder Woman comic strip that ran in newspapers in the 1940s.

The art and storylines are done by the original team of Marston and Peter, so it's very much like another volume of Wonder Woman Archives, only in black and white. However, because of workload constraints, Peter turned the inking of the strips over to his assistants, and the result is that they are cleaner, crisper and better rendered than much of Peter's comic book work.

The Hiketeia is included in Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka Vol. 1 and that is also one of my favorite collections because I just love Rucka’s WW so much. He writes her so well.

u/saintdane05 · 1 pointr/WonderWoman

I'd say pick up the volumes of Wonder Woman by X (IMO the best runs being Rucka's and Perez's)

u/scarecroe · 2 pointsr/WonderWoman

Not counting the "Diana Prince" collections where she was de-powered the whole time (and not really recognizably Wonder Woman), the only trade collecting WW comics from that era (I believe) is "The Twelve Labors".

But if you're just starting, you really want to do yourself a favor and read the Perez run. It starts here.

Check out the release date for yourself on its Amazon page.

TBF, this isn't her "classic" costume, that's this one. There have been several variations on her costume since then. Even the one you've posted isn't her original post-Crisis costume, it's the version that came after that.

>Did you buy the Golden Age omnibus

No because that would have been smart and meant I was informed about something outside politics. I bought these;

compilation series

but look at this one...

the expensive one

I can find no rational explanation for that price unless a mad gorilla ate all the copies but that one.

I did also pick up these.

newspaper serials

war years

> Our sweet little girl grew up and sold out.

I agree. At least in the Perez years she FOUGHT the God of War. Now she IS the God of War.
