I've been working from home for a little under two years now. My setup is a little pricey, but I've paid for it working completely online, so that's a nice feeling.

I currently don't have a desk (won't have room until I move in with my girlfriend in a few months), so I work on a laptop for now. The laptop is a gaming laptop. I have a gaming laptop because, I'm not looking to simply "work" for an income. During the day, I work online while my laptop mines a cryptocurrency in the background. Crypto mining has definitely been a profitable venture for me. In the evening, I stream for a few hours on Twitch. I'm not a big established streamer, but I've made a little bit of income from streaming.

Because of not having a desk, I don't really have room for a second screen. However, I do have a Acer R11 Chromebook that I usually keep a couple Chrome tabs open to monitor various things. The touch screen is really nice as well.

My mouse is a Razer Naga. I am a man of efficiency and I believe that, for online workers like ourselves who are usually getting paid by getting work done and not by the hour, efficiency and productivity are key. The keypad on the side of the mouse work wonders. Being able to program different keys and even scripts to them is amazing. Some people prefer the Logitech equivalent to it.

The headset is going to ultimately come down to personal preference. There are many, many different headsets out that that come in all sorts of shapes and styles. Do you want over-the-ear? On-ear? Do you want the band to go over the head? Behind the head? Do you need a wireless headset because you have kids at home and you need to get up often? Reviews may not be too reliable as well. For example, with gaming headsets, if you go to any gaming forum or subreddit and ask about gaming headsets, people will have you believe that the HyperX Cloud II Headset is the greatest headset put on God's green earth. It just wasn't for me. It was a little tight on my head and the audio was a bit too "in my head", which gave me headaches. I much prefer the Astro A40 TR Headset.

Finally, you're going to want to protect your eyes. If you work online, you're going to be staring at a screen for hours on end. If you're looking at a screen, you're exposed to artificial blue light. Artificial blue light is meant to emulate sunlight. Exposing your eyes to it will strain your eyes, which can disrupt your sleeping patterns, cause headaches, elevate stress, etc. That's only in the short term. In the long term, well, screens emitting blue light haven't been around long enough yet, so we don't really know what the long term effects of it is. Still, you need to protect your eyes. There are a handful of companies that make glasses designed to specifically filter out blue light. When I used to wear specific glasses for this, my preferred brand was Gunnar Optiks. I say "used to wear" - I had to get prescription glasses recently and my eye doctor offered blue light protection in my glasses. I believe it's called "Prevencia". If you have to wear prescription glasses, ask about it next time you see your eye doctor.

Hope this helps!

Edit: I forgot to mention F.lux. F.lux is a program that reduces the amount of blue light your screen emits based on the time of day, emulating a sunset. At night, it gives your screen a red/orange lighting. At night, after the sun has set and F.lux kicks on on my screen, I take my glasses off. It's a very nice program.

You should be able schedule the initial interview as soon as 12-24 hours after signing up. I think from my sign up date to hire date I completed the entire process in 4-5 days! Which was awesome because I desperately needed work at the time! You choose when to do the interview based on the available time slots. However, there are trying something new where you can do a completely self-recorded initial interview, which has some advantages I'm sure. You will have more control over exactly what you are sending them and hopefully show something professional enough to get above $18/hour and closer to $20 or $22!

I would not invest a lot into props unless you are hired by VIPKID. In every stage of this hiring process, you will have access to the power point of what class you will be pretending to teach, so you can find those props ahead of time around your house, or make a few simple drawings. So while in practice you will need a variety of versatile props, the interview is all about getting a very specific case correct. All I purchased was a large white poster board to hang behind me, some post-it note letters to create an alphabet on the sheet, and use markers to draw some colorful shapes/animals/people/etc. on it as well. I would recommend, however, buying a small handheld dry erase board! They are so versatile and it is a small investment cost to apply for this job and look way more professional. I also purchased a nice attachable microphone which I will link below. Don't get too obsessed with finding tons of awesome props, though. Many applicants often focus too much on props and not enough on their communication skills!

If you are hired, I also have a whole list of what props and setups to get then. I'm all about keeping it simple and not having my supplies take up a whole room in my house! :D

This microphone is awesome if you want to turn your good headphones into an amazing headSET!

Yeah.. navigating a classroom full of 13 screaming two year olds for hours on end... just a bit stressful..

I remembered in a book I read, I think it was this one- (Wellbeing: The Five Essential Elements ) that in a study, people who defined themselves as "successful" or as having a good overall "wellbeing" were those who loved their jobs. That statement was an eye opener for me.. I had no idea some people actually enjoyed their work everyday. All I ever knew was existential dread... The book is definitely a good read if you're interested. It's what got me thinking about my work, and inspired me to look for a job I could actually enjoy, the teaching one.

I'm sure you will find joy in your work again, perhaps with the switch of a job. Surely the right one is out there. Relevant and engaging work is not always easy to find, and the search can quickly become exhausting. But sometimes, given time, the right job will find you.

>How did you go about a reimbursement? The Blue Yeti mic is our son's mic that we were using for troubleshooting.

I did not get reimbursed, but someone who used my referral link says they did. Every point of contact with the company is through the "lesson support" live chat. If they can't answer your question, they'll tell you who can.

>The webcam has a mic too so we might just use that one

Make sure it's a good quality mic. This is the mic I use, with no problems.

>Also turns out to have 4 people in the chat you have to have at least an I5 processor so I guess she's getting an upgrade there too lol.

Are you referring to the 1v4 "Group Class" project? It pays slightly more (120% of base pay) but I would still not recommend it, at least in the beginning. I believe you only have one group class at a time so the actual bonus you get paid is only a few dollars per week and actually teaching those classes seemed much more difficult than teaching normal 1-on-1 classes (to me).

Having a nicer computer will make any at-home job better, but if normal 1-on-1 classes work fine on the computer for now I might ask your wife to reconsider the group classes and not get the upgrade. PM me if you'd like my skype to talk privately.

I'm sorry to hear that my friend. That's honestly really unacceptable of your doctor!? Might want to consider finding a new one. My doctor has not hesitated with my pain. Not that he has helped too much but if I ask for something he supports me. Definitely hope you find some help! The books I keep getting recommended seem promising! - book

> I live in a small town and everything's pretty much taken.

First, this can't possibly be true. "Pretty much" is a hedging statement - there's always something to do, even if it's not full time.

Second, and I know this isn't in the spirit of this sub, but:

Start a little local gig. A one-shot $500 is easier to earn by hustling IRL than clicking online.

Seriously - get off your butt and hustle. As a seventeen-year-old, you're able-bodied and should be creative enough to do something productive.

Get out there and offer to wash store windows, remove snow (I'm sure there's lots of snow), run errands, deliver groceries for $20 to the elderly, plant gardens/mow lawns/paint fences when Spring rolls around, clean houses or offices, clean out garages/sheds, help people pack & move, buy/refinish & sell used furniture, make artisanal soaps, fix a few computers/iPhones/Smartphones (!), babysit, tutor kids, build something for someone, organize an event and keep a portion of ticket sales, teach Finnish over Skype...almost anything you can think of that people need done and don't want to do.

Other ideas: what services and products do the older people in your life pay for? What skills or knowledge do you have that not everyone else does that might be useful or transferable to other work? What tasks do people in your area have to perform but hate that you could charge a few bucks and do it for them?

What pains or needs do people have that you can solve?

Just go ask business owners what you could help them with.

Sorry but Clickworker sounds like a stall tactic or excuse. Go do something and generate some value in your community.

*edit: even if you're not able to do physical labor, something above should work.

I'm going to give you a different recommendation than what you're seeking...

I also dealt with (and am still dealing slightly with) sciatica. Do yourself a favor and read up a bit on Dr. John Sarno. Here is one of his books that was recommended to me by a friend, which I highly recommend looking into. Some celebs (i.e. Howard Stern) have endorsed him.

Best of luck

If you don't already have a foot pedal, get one. They make it possible to rewind / play / pause without ceasing to type.

What software are you using for playback? NCH ExpressScribe is free and designed for use with a foot pedal.

It takes about twice the length of the recording to accurately transcribe. Your speed and accuracy will go up over time. You can practice by transcribing YouTube videos / television. In fact, closed-captioning companies often hire people to do live transcription, which has a much broader margin of error.

Some clients want tags, others don't. Tags are only really useful in cases where there are multiple speakers or a question-and-answer format. Ask the client first.

Your comfort is important for endurance, so make your chair and desk as ergonomic as possible. There is a very real risk of developing tendonitis in the wrist due to consistent typing; use of a wrist pad is ideal. Take regular breaks for stretching.

My advice: Listen through once, typing everything you can understand as quickly as possible. Listen through at a higher speed a second time, correcting mistakes and adding tags. Listen through a third time at an even higher speed to ensure you've done the best you can.

To be honest with you, I haven't found a headset under $20 that was good for work purposes. They all either have bad quality, or break really fast.

I have this one and the microphone on it is alright I guess. I'm told that it picks up a bit of background noise though. It's

For working, I usually use this one which you can pair with almost any headphones hat have the plug. I use a Sentley ThorX, but you could pick a cheap one. It's $30 just for the mic, but the clarity is well worth the cost. A lot of people rave about how clear it is when I get on discord.

As for testing, just google "microphone test" and you'll find all sorts of places to try it out. You could even use skype if you wanted, or plug it into a phone then call a nearby phone (friend or family member).

I've never done transcription but did IT for court reporters that absolutely swore by USB foot pedals like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008EA1K66 to control pause, rewind, and play.
