I wouldn’t say it’s super common, but it’s definitely not abnormal. I felt, and still occasionally feel, the same way. It sucks that it’s a time-sensitive thing, I wish I had had months to make the decision! Your feelings are valid. I like to think that I made the decision as a mother, and as mothers we have to make uncomfortable choices for the sake of our children - potential, current, and future. I had to sacrifice bringing that potential person into the world so I could have more time to cultivate a better life, and be more prepared, for my future children. You can think of it that way if it’s helpful for you.

I’ve also been using some workbooks to help me work through my emotions. This one is free and has been super helpful. I also picked up this book off Amazon and have been enjoying it. I don’t relate to everything in it, but it has some helpful exercises.

It’s okay to grieve, it’s okay to regret, it’s okay to have mixed feelings. But now we have to make the choice to heal. You’ve got this 💜

I'm sorry that your provider didn't prepare you for the reality of a medication abortion - the pain and seeing the sac are both things that can be traumatic even if you do expect them. It's okay to have complex feelings about your abortion. Especially with all the news and the rhetoric, it's hard to not have internalized stigma. Maybe you would have rather saved the sac and buried it - you can always do that if you do need another abortion, and the only way to find out these things is going through them, unfortunately. Next time you want your boyfriend's support, you know to ask for it. You did your best with the information and the circumstances. Be kind to yourself. You are a strong, brave, beautiful person, learning as you go just like the rest of us.

This workbook on emotional and spiritual healing after an abortion might help: https://www.pregnancyoptions.info/emotional&spiritual.htm. There is a section at the end for healing partners that you can give to your boyfriend and your therapist. Your therapist may also be able to work through the workbook with you if you would rather do it with them than alone.

Another book I'd recommend is Pleasure Activism by adrienne marie brown. There is a chapter on pleasure after sexual trauma that is incredible. The chapter is based on this piece that she wrote called "I Want You, But I'm Triggered". (She also talks about it a bit in these interviews, and more on sex after #metoo in this one.)

The body keeps the score (another good book!) and it makes sense that physical trauma would be resurfaced from such a physical experience as the abortion. Healing is possible and you deserve all the love and support in the world.

I saw this in another thread recently and it's pretty awesome: https://www.amazon.com/ClinicalGuard®-Pregnancy-Test-Strips-Individually-Sealed/dp/B007VT30C8

"Pee stick" pregnancy tests work just fine, even at the dollar store. They use the same testing method as the clinical strips above (react to presence of hormone).

With any of these tests, there's basically no such thing as a false positive. If it's positive, you are definitely pregnant. If you get a negative result, you will want to wait a few days and test again - if you still haven't gotten your period. Also make sure you get plenty of urine on the stick to minimize the chances of false negative.

I'm not sure how it is in Canada, but if you do end up needing an abortion, most likely you will still need to have a test done with a positive result at the doctor's office. You may also be required to confirm the pregnancy with an ultrasound (the trans-vaginal kind; unfortunately the over-the-belly type isn't accurate enough in the early weeks of pregnancy).

You can do all of this at Planned Parenthood if you have anything like that up there. If you absolutely have no other options and are close enough to the border, I'm pretty sure PP doesn't have citizenship requirements. But you would probably want to call them to make sure. They generally provide services based on a sliding scale and should be able to give you a quote over the phone with your income information. I don't know for sure if they're able to provide services non-residents but at the very least, they won't judge you for calling and asking.

I'm really sorry to hear that your doctor is like that. I imagine it's also not that easy to switch providers. Best of luck to you and let us know if you need to talk or need any more advice.

Online, Guttmacher is a great resource with plenty of papers that can help you familiarize yourself with the data in an easy and approachable way. Most places that use statistics- even anti-abortion ones- are pulling those numbers from studies published by Guttmacher. Rewire is also a nice spot to get up-to-date news regarding abortion (and other reproductive health topics) from a pro-choice perspective.

As far as books go:

My wife is part way through EMDR and has had good results. The idea is your memory of event is recorded as trauma, which means you can not process it and integrate it into your life like a normal memory. So you end up re-experiencing it in your body like it is happening over and over. EMDR helps your brain begin to process the experience in a more normal way, so it integrates into your life and doesn't feel as overwhelming. It is exhausting though, plan on taking care of yourself.

I’ve used a version that I think was called MyChoice. It was $20 and I was able to get it at my local grocery store. It was my first time using a morning after pill but it was effective.

Edit to add the link, looks like it’s just over $10 on Amazon:

This is my therapist’s book and it has been immensely helpful for me. It has some spiritual references (no religion or any particular ideology), which I found comforting - just a heads up because I know not everyone relates to that. The book has helped me so much.
