It is a certainly different. Shooters will be depending on you to teach, to coach, cheer them up if they aren't shooting well and give them that little bit of advice to help them go from a 195-200 point shooter to Rifleman.

If you haven't already registered on the Appleseed forums, I would go ahead and do that and introduce yourself in your State subforum. Instructors there will help get you the resources you need, as well as access to TIPS, the private forum for instructors (though TIPS access is granted after you become an orange hat).

You will learn so much more as an instructor....whether it's on the technical side of the house or the history. In this respect it's almost like becoming a black belt in a martial art - whereas many view it as completing the skillset, you find it really opens up a longer, more fulfilling path that will improve you as a shooter and as a Citizen.

You will start to instantly see common bad habits and errors in the six steps, sling use, or the SHFs. Your own shooting will improve because as you teach your fellow shooters, they teach you as well, and drilling them in the techniques of basic rifle marksmanship really drills them into your mind as well.

The most important difference, for me at least, is in telling the story of how these United States came to be, the sacrifices made by everyday people in similar positions and situations to those gathered around to hear it, and seeing shooters react to it. Being part of reconnecting folks to their heritage is the most rewarding experience I've had thus far from my short time as an Instructor (first time teaching as an Orange Hat was in November of last year).

I just advanced to IIT3 on Sunday and am starting to get into the tougher material to teach (taught IMC for the first time this past weekend - understanding it well enough to use it on a personal level is one thing, teaching it coherently to people who don't know anything about it can be a challenge. I have yet to do a formal KD event - by the end of that IMC should be no problem for you).....and the Three Strikes start at IIT4.

If you haven't gotten it yet, get yourself a copy of Paul Revere's Ride by David Hackett Fisher, which is the source book for the history portion of Project Appleseed. It will be well used in your time as an instructor. Mine has flags sticking out of it, notes in the margins, references to other books that have additional info on the events of 19 April 1775.

I would also look into an Instructor Boot Camp (I went to the one in Georgia last fall). I learned a great deal about teaching the material and running an AS weekend that would take working several shoots to pick up on. It's a weekend dedicated only to the teaching aspects and how to be a good instructor - they are typically free and are worth every second of class time.

Who know, maybe we'll teach an event together sometime.

Thank you for the advice, luckily I've seen these suggestions elsewhere, and have taken the time to get them all taken care of. I should have been more specific in my initial post about my setup. The 10/22 has the Volquartsen bolt release, and I've installed the sling swivels and gotten a GI sling. Though, if I leave the barrel band on, as the swivel is installed in front of it, it does sit awkwardly. Do you have any thoughts on barrel bands being removed? It seems they're purely cosmetic.

Currently have 2 10 round rotary mags, and a 15 round BX mag. 2 10 round for the AR and 4 15/30 hex mags, so I feel I'm covered in that area.

These are the rings I have on the 10/22 - https://www.amazon.com/Weaver-1-Inch-Steel-Mounts-Ruger/dp/B000N8JV9A Does that look alright for the purposes of the weekend? The irons visibility is by design.

And I'm expecting the red dot, as you indicated, to be only useful to a point. Hopefully the MBUS irons will do the trick at the AQT distance. Primary Arms seems to have a few good options for magnifiers. Any you can vouch for? Would you say a magnifier would be a better first investment than a trigger upgrade?

In my opinion, this is the best scope for rimfire in general and appleseed specifically. Parallax free to 10 yards and nikon glass is amazing.

Midway Pro is the standard. I have two of them.

Enough padding, good width, stakes down, rolls up without a lot of messing around.

I also have a Bob Allen mat that I caught a deal on. It works well too. Buckles instead of velcro is nice, but it's a little narrower than the Midway Pro. Lighter color helps in the sun.

Looks like it’s actually $9.50/600

LINK.

Good thinking!

> If the scope is focused and the sight picture is crisp, what impact does parallax have?

They won't be. If you have a scope with a fixed parallax at 100 yards, then it's not possible to have both the reticle and objective plane in focus at the same time for a 25 yard target.

> Adjustable parallax scopes are a big jump up in cost, and I don't think it's worth it for a 10/22.

They don't have to be. Simmons makes an AO scope for $45.

As with everything else, you get what you pay for. But it's very easy to find a good-quality AO scope in the $100-$150 range. I don't see the point in spending a ton of money on a scope for a 22LR when your ballistics are going to be limited either way.

Just make sure it is cotton, not nylon.

This type of sling swivel (because you told us your gun has qd attachment points). Braudel Sling Swivel Mount Qd Quick Detach/Release 1.25",Heavy Duty Push Button Swivels (2X QD Sling Swivels) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MXYWFE4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_YUkDCbSMRXNM8
