It's mind-boggling isn't. Daniel Dennett wrote a book into his investigation into this question, from the perspective that religions are memes that act like evolved viral organisms, perfectly adapted to lodge themselves into the minds of those who are without the inoculation of critical thinking ability. Contained in this idea, is that many religions hijack our brains' mechanism to fall in love, meaning that religious believers are in love with their religion and are blinded to the reality of it. I love Anthony's method, which is an application of Peter Boghossian's book. I'd love to try this method the next time I speak de novo with someone about religion. It's so soft yet cuts through all barriers if applied correctly.

Cheers.

There is an interesting [critique] (https://www.amazon.com/Ehrman-Quest-Historical-Jesus-Nazareth/dp/1578840198) of Dr. Ehrman's Did Jesus Exist that is very powerful. The critique pretty well demolishes the thin arguments Ehrman offers for historicity claims for Jesus.

Check out the scifi novel "the Sparrow" by Mary Russell, tackles the religion in space dilemma, pretty good read too.

I had not heard of Rebecca Goldstein, but I read Susan Jacoby's book on Robert Ingersoll when it came out and it was quite good.

I'd recommend The Purity Myth for anyone who's interested in the subject.

That's not a position I have made and one of which I don't care to defend. If you are curious though, Bart Ehrman does have a book out called Did Jesus Exist?

There's also some scholarly subreddits that you can find that have discussed the topic as well.
