I'd steer away from Norman.

Regardless of age, it's hard to beat Miles' biography of Paul - because we all know it's authorised.

As for George there was a thread today: https://www.reddit.com/r/georgeharrison/comments/cjy3hf/best_biographies/

You might also take a look at this: https://www.amazon.com/George-Harrison-Soul-Man-Vol-ebook/dp/B07N11T8W9/ and volume 2, but this one I haven't read.

\> What are the best books on them as a band

I think that mean's Hunter Davies original biography: https://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Updated-Hunter-Davies/dp/0393338746

And it has to mean the Anthology: https://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Anthology/dp/0811826848

And it definitely has to mean Tune In: https://www.amazon.com/Beatles-These-Years-Extended-Special/dp/1408704781

For John, I really enjoyed the 'Letters' book that Hunter edited - but I prefer first person material.

Also, you might look at https://www.johnlennonseries.com/ I've heard her speak and she knows her stuff - but its a long road she is hoeing.

I haven't read that one, but there are several reference books I keep on hand:

  • All The Songs - A hardcover encyclopedia-like book that was released fairly recently. Lots of in-depth information about the Beatles' entire catalog of songs.
  • Beatlesongs - This one might be a bit obscure. Has a percentage that each Beatle contributed to writing each song, along with blurbs about the Beatles' opinions on the songs and what inspired them to write it.
  • The Complete Beatles Chronicle - Gives descriptions of what the Beatles did on each day from ~1960 to 1970, including time in the studio, media interviews, etc.
  • The Beatles: The Biography - A really good book about the Beatles' shared careers; one of the best I've read.

Don't know if that's precisely what you were asking, but those are books I'd recommend. One I wouldn't recommend is Chet Flippo's "Yesterday". I gave my copy of that book away because it was really negative towards Paul. I don't mind constructive criticism of any of the Beatles, but the author of that book seemed to revel in trashing Paul. I just didn't like the tone of that book and can't recommend it to fans.

I have a huge photo history book called John, Paul, George & Ringo. It's a great coffee table book (if you have a large coffee table to display it on) and it's filled with hundreds of photos, some rare, and each page has a multitude of facts about the Beatles from their beginnings to their breakup.

EDIT: Here's the Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/John-Paul-George-Ringo-Illustrated/dp/1435110072

Magic Circles is a really unique book on the beatles. He starts off describing the Beatles as like a toilet! Sounds bizarre I know but I found it fascinating the depths he gets.

I'd recommend this book. It's how I learned to play guitar. You'll probably able to get it at your local library.

Beatles Complete Easy Guitar

Just know that some songs will require a capo to get it in the right key. And while it says Complete, there are a few songs missing.

I didn't know how extensive it was either until I looked it up, although I did know they had flown into several different cities.

If you're interested in this kind of subject, I highly recommend this book and this book by author John C. Winn. Together they basically list every scrap of audio or video material of the Beatles while they were still a band, in chronological order, and they also tell you on what CD or DVD (bootleg or not) where you can find them.

If you're after something a little more basic in terms of arrangements then http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Beatles-Complete-Guitar-Edition/dp/0860018970 is a great book. I have both the guitar and the piano versions and for some reason the piano book has some songs in a different key, so I mostly use the guitar edition.

Oh!! Read Chris O'Dells Book . It is definitely more behind the scenes and touches on a lot in that time period.

If you haven't already read The Cynical Idealist, I highly recommend it!

Tell Me Why. http://www.amazon.com/Tell-Me-Why-Beatles-Sixties/dp/0306811200/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1331831393&sr=8-6

It provides background information regarding the song as well as a musical analysis of every song. Very thorough.
