Here are my own personal rankings, from what I liked the most to what I liked the least:

  1. "San Junipero" - I've seen some criticism on this sub about this episode's tonal dissonance, but that's actually what I admire so much about this episode: the fact that it dares to be a bit lighter. I do think the ending is not uniformly positive though, there is still something unsettling to it, which I like. I'm quite taken with the episodes (as you can probably tell) that focus on more intimate personal relationships and technology's role in mediating/disrupting those relationships--"San Junipero" is an excellent example of that. Also yes, I'll admit it, being gay myself, it was nice to see a same-sex couple happen.

  2. "White Bear" - Just as "San Junipero" goes toward the lighter end of the spectrum, I also love "White Bear" because of its push in the other direction toward the extraordinarily grim. I remember the first time I saw this episode, it really left me rattled for a couple of days after. Thematically, I really liked its take on the relentlessness of the public's need/desire to punish (it really reminded me of So You've Been Publicly Shamed, honestly).

  3. "Be Right Back" - I actually didn't like this one the first time I saw it, but seeing it three or so more times since, I've fallen in love with it! Every time I go back, I notice something different, and as the relationship between Mar and the programmed-Ash unravels, I always feel my heart breaking a little bit. "You're not enough of him! You're nothing!"

  4. "Nosedive" - I think that this will probably be the prototypical Black Mirror episode for me in my mind. It's funny and strange and tragic and bittersweet in its end all at once. The concept for this episode also hit quite close to home.

  5. "Shut Up and Dance" - Like "White Bear," I really admire this episode's willingness to be relentlessly dark, and explore similar themes. But, in particular, I find the end to be particularly powerful in its rejection of any sort of control or easy answer--the characters can do everything "right" (relative to their instructions) and still effectively fail.

  6. "Fifteen Million Merits" - This was the episode that made me really really get into the show. Although the satire and concept can feel a bit too on-the-nose, I loved the dynamic between Bing and Abi, and the end of the episode felt so sad to me and raised so many interesting questions! Also, it introduced us to "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)," which is a gorgeous song!

  7. "White Christmas" - This is middle-of-the-road for me because I'm absolutely in love with the second story in the episode, with Matt "programming" the cookie, but was a bit more lukewarm on the stories that bookended the episode. The ending was definitely haunting, though!

  8. "The National Anthem" - I must admit this one also didn't speak to me, immediately. However, seeing it again, I really do appreciate its own grimness. I think, perhaps, it's a bit lower on the list for me because of how public a figure Callows was--although I suppose that is absolutely the point, it's just not my biggest interest with the show.

  9. "The Entire History of You" - For the first time the grain/Z-eyes analogue appears, this is a great introduction. The obsessiveness Liam is consumed by is super palpable. However, the central conflict still felt a bit too common for this episode to be TOTALLY distinctive.

  10. "Men Against Fire" - I really enjoyed this episode, however, I did feel that the ending was a bit sudden and almost a bit too...familiar? It felt like I knew exactly where it was going. That said, the concept was really quite powerful.

  11. "Hated in the Nation" - I liked this one, but it just wasn't as resonant for me. I felt that the show tackled similar themes in much more effective, haunting ways with "White Bear" and "Shut Up and Dance."

  12. "The Waldo Moment" - Although, as /u/Anniejo9 points out, this episode is insanely relevant now politically, it just really dragged for me. Still enjoyable though.

  13. "Playtest" - This is probably the only episode of Black Mirror that I genuinely just did not like. I did find the very end resonant, but I really felt bored by the rest of the episode. I can't explain why. I know many others did get a lot out of it, though.

One thing that grinds my gears about this whole thread is that just because an idea is similar doesn't mean its plagiarism.

I'm a writer myself, and one book that really helped me when I was in college is called "Steal Like An Artist" which essentially explains how nothing is original, so whatever you think you're crazy cool idea is, it's probably been done before. So with that in mind, it asks you to explore the idea of taking what you love and enjoy, and using that as inspiration for your own work to make it unique.

I would actually not be surprised if Charlie Brooker read this story at some point in his life and thought "Wow! What a cool story! This would make a great screenplay!" And kept that in mind when digging for ideas. That's just how artists work, and so rather than criticize it for plagiarism, looking at it as inspired by the original material and it's own, unique, modern take on it.

As a sort of side example-- one of my favorite movies of all time is Arrival, which is based on a short story from 2002 called "The Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang (which I actually only just realized was published in 1998 and that kinda blows my mind). The short story is way different than the movie, yet it still executes the same idea. I'd check out the short story collection by him if you get a chance cause there's a lot of really neat stories (I've got some basic scripts written for "Hell is the Abscence if God" and "Liking What You See: A Documentary", the latter of which could totally be a Black Mirror episode)

>I've seen no evidence that Netflix set any requirement for Americanized content, but I have seen this interview:

That's not really the point being made here though, the fact that it appears that way is the issue, he might be trying to take the piss out of people who believed that is the case, but all he ended up doing was retreading old water in some ways and not providing what made Black Mirror, well Black Mirror for a good portion of his time writing for Netflix, though Men Against Fire illustrates this well NoseDive is far from what I'd consider great Black Mirror and San Junipero although very good was good because it dealt with topics that weren't really apart of culture so much as simply being human.

>And considering that the last episodes on Channel 4 were released in Feb 2013, and it took almost 4 years for the show to be revived in November 2016 a case could be made that if Netflix hadn't picked the show up, it wouldn't exist at all, in any format.

This is just wrong: Channel 4 did want to continue Black Mirror:

https://www.amazon.com/Inside-Black-Mirror-Charlie-Brooker/dp/1984823485

On the day of the press screening for "White Christmas", Brooker and Jones had a meeting with Channel 4 executives, who told them that they wanted to continue the series but due to budget constraints, it would need to be a co-production. The pair had travelled to Los Angeles a few months prior to try to get co-production money, but were unsuccessful. The channel also suggested that Brooker could write an episode of Electric Dreams.

In December 2014, the first two series of the programme were released on Netflix in the United States after they bought exclusive streaming rights, leading to increased attention for the programme. In a bidding war between channels, which included several American networks, Netflix led with a commitment of two series of ten episodes each. Brooker and Jones reported in 2018 that though they and Netflix were both keen to have Channel 4 as equal partners, they could not get a meeting with Channel 4. They eventually got a meeting without discussion of a co-production with Netflix, where the channel suggested a renewal for three episodes. The channel later offered six episodes if full treatments could be given in advance, but Brooker and Jones were concerned due to past rejection of ideas. They had a limited time to reply to U.S. offers and chose to make a deal with Netflix.

And that is all straight from Brooker himself. Channel 4 were not too co-operative, but there was certainly a desire to continue Black Mirror from their end that being said it's very unlikely that it would have been cancelled outright, though likely they wouldn't have had the budget and access that Netflix could clearly offer.

Good question and I should qualify I’m not a physicist but Dr. Michio Kaku wrote a pretty good book outlining his reasons why that statement is true. The Future of the Mind Great read.

Edit: Name spelling

> The truth is that the singularity could be reached but never realized as long as you don't connect that super-smart AI to anything.

A super-intelligent AI could probably convince a human to let it out of its confinement (Google The AI-Box Experiment for an exploration of this), but even failing that it might think of a way to break free that we can't even conceive of. Even if we literally didn't connect it to anything, that leaves us with no way to interact with it, so what was the point of developing it?

The reason I say human-based AI is less risky is because it would implicitly have human values. It wouldn't kill all humans so that we can't stop it from turning the planet into paperclips. Designing a friendly AI from scratch basically requires us to express human ethics in a way a computer can understand, which is not even close to a solved problem.

Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence is a pretty good exploration of the dangers of AI if you're interested in the subject, but it's a fairly difficult read. Tim Urban's articles on the subject are simpler, if much less in-depth.

For anyone that wants to read an awesome book largely about this topic, I highly recommend "Permutation City" by Greg Egan. It's really good.

Some of the ideas explored with this concept is shit like rich dudes utilizing this tech to basically become immortal and continue to run their corporations after their real world self dies with their digital clones taking over. Basically also as a way to wait until real word robotics and cyborg tech and whatnot is advanced enough to host their consciousness in the real world again.

Also how like digital clones can mentally crack from the realization that the real them is not them etc etc.

LUMA DOESN’T MEAN SOMEONE WHO DISAGREES WITH THE AUTHOR SAYING "NAH SHE WAS ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND THEIR FLAT BREADS WERE SO GOOD BECAUSE THEY WERE RIDICULOUSLY NICE. ONE TIME HE EVEN READ CAJUN NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS TO THE WHOLE SITUATION. HE SAID THIS IN ANOTHER POST BUT EVEN WITH EQUIVALENT CATCH RATES IT'LL BE BETTER THAN ITS PREDECESSOR — COSTS JUST $150 MILLION PER LAUNCH, NOT A PREDATOR. SHE DOESN'T LOOK VERY ACCURATE AS TO WHERE WE'RE GOING AT FIRST "DO YOU GUYS USE IN THE 1ST PLACE."*

Clint Mansell's score for San Junipero was a tangible part of its genius. He's done beautiful work on many films with similar emotional landscapes. Here are some of my favorites:

I don't know about that song but I would really like the score to this piano piece:

Yep.

Also btw:
A full year after Nosedive, The Orville aired an episode that raised accusations of a "ripoff" — although the Orville showrunner has claimed that he wrote the Orville episode earlier in 2016 (i.e., before Nosedive aired), having been inspired by a book that he'd read.

If the 2nd amendment read 'The right to bear arms shall not be infringed' you'd be on solid ground. But that's not what it says. If you're interested in what the founders meant by the 2nd, how how the NRA began perverting that meaning in the second half of the 20th century, I recommend this book https://www.amazon.com/The-Second-Amendment-A-Biography/dp/147674744X.

Wise.

I read a book by a guy from that 90s band Semisonic. (this one: https://www.amazon.com/Wanna-Rock-Roll-Star-Machine-Gunned-ebook/dp/B000FC1R46)

The American music industry is (was?) more similar to this than most fans realize. Semisonic's "Closing Time" was ubiquitous for years, yet the band wound up pretty much broke after working their asses off under standard recording industry contracts.

This Is the one I got. I have had zero problems or issues with it. If you want to spend a little extra you could go with this one it’s one of the best starter tables if you want to spend the extra money.

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. Really interesting short stories with a heady sci-fi bend. The movie Arrival was based on one of them.

The Ridge by John Rector

I just finished this book, and it is so f'n good. Like a Black Mirror or Twilight Zone episode in a book. Creepy and suspenseful.

That's the BTS book "Inside Black Mirror", it's not available quiet yet (Nov. 6) but it is pre-order available. The other book that's expected to have more stories is on indefinite hiatus.

It kinda reminds me of the score of Portal - No Escape, but I think it's its own thing because you can get the episode's music here.

u/ameoba · 1 pointr/blackmirror

Such a thing is featured in Slaughtermatic (don't worry, the cops have them & they're the bad guys).

This is actually a book a friend of mine wrote. It's not exactly the same but I did describe it thusly: Ever take peyote, binge-watch Twilight Zone and Tales From the Darkside before having night terrors? This is even better. It's a collection of surreal and nightmarish tales.
