(I know I'm late, but would like to add my 2 cents anyway.)

I'd say the series stays about the same. (But I also loved it to begin with.) I only remember disliking some of the developments with the Deltans storyline (though I did like it again at the end) and perhaps the romance being a bit of a mixed bag for me.

>... the narrative left behind a lot of what I found most intriguing about the story (Cartesian dilemma of soul and body) ...

Do you mean dualism? When exactly was this brought up?

As I understood it, Bob 1 was pondering whether or not he (a computer program) could be considered conscious -- Something living, something of moral significance. I thought this was settled adequately by his extended monologue. He was wondering whether he was a philosophical zombie (i.e. acting as if conscious without actually being conscious.) He was not wondering how his soul interacted with his replicant hardware (or software.)

And I'd say he's revealed himself as a sort a functionalist: "Handsome is as handsome does." Or rather "Bob is as Bob does."

On that subject, one of my favorite philosophy books is Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett. It's heavy reading but I still recommend it. Here's a review. Also this preface by Tadeusz Zawidzki about Dennett's corpus :D

Edit: phrasing

Try starship mage

The first book is an "omnibus" of all the chapters the author originally published online. so there's a lot of repetition (reexplaining things at the beginning of chapters), so don't let that bias you against the series.

It's the best sci-fi of its kind ("space opera") I've ever read. It's amazing. I wish they made an epic movie series of it - it could rival the lord of the rings / harry potter movies if done right.

I can't recommend it enough. It's so good.

Since you seem to like hard sci fi:

  1. Pushing Ice
  2. Ender's game
  3. Rendezvous with Rama
  4. The Diamond Age

If you want something military I would suggest Old Man's War or Starship Troopers

If you want a fun book where people get to meet and kill interesting creatures Monster Hunter International ( get the kindle version with audible as a add in it's only 7.24$ total )

Oh and if you want a free audio book about scifi football

You might enjoy the Time Crossed Engineer by Leo Frankowski: what happens when a professional engineer is accidentally back in time to 1231 AD in Medieval Poland.. just ten years before the Mongols are scheduled to invade.

It's a time travel story written by an engineer who just liked to play with the idea of what a modern day (well, 1980s engineer) engineer could do if stranded. But he starts from scratch and builds up. I liked it twenty years ago. Not sure if it still holds up.

What you're looking for is "Passages in the Void" by Roger Williams. It is exceptional in this regard. Also, the time scales it works on are mind bending, waaaaaay beyond anything in the Bobiverse. There's so very much more I want to say about it, but spoilers.

You can read it online here:

Maybe. But we have a Bible, Koran, Book of Morman, and fake news on every channel. Writing things down doesn't always equate to memory retention. You triggered my memory of Nightfall by Isaac Asimov & Robert Silverberg. They have 7 suns so they're always in daylight, except once every 2 thousand years, long enough for everyone to forget.
