“Or, as I like to put it,” Goey said, also taking some food. “I’m not bending over so this bloody village will like me. I don’t want their good regard so much that I’d have to regard myself as a wretch.”

Thank you! Here's an excerpt from book 2:

. I examined the buttons and knobs on the door panel, the heat and air conditioning vents, and the pocket on the back of the driver’s seat. Then, I noticed something I had never seen before: a shiny silver knob on the door near the ashtray and the window crank. I touched it gently, and it moved. I pushed on it, and it descended into the door a few centimeters. “Hmmm, I wonder what it is,” I thought. A minute later, to my great surprise and delight, it popped up! I picked it up, carefully, quietly, and looked at it. It was a kind of tube and inside the tube, at the far end, was a bright white circle. I touched the circle with my index finger, and as the pain struck I realized instantly what it was.
I didn’t make a sound. I put the cigarette lighter back and thrust my finger into my mouth. No tears rolled down my face, because I was skilled at preventing them from falling. I was old enough to realize that I might have a serious burn that would require medical attention. The icy fear that I felt in my heart surpassed the pain. If my mother knew I had touched something I wasn’t supposed to touch, and it had caused me injury, the consequences would assuredly be worse than the burn. And then she would tell my father, and here we go again.

“Chemists think it’s all about chemistry,” she said, crossing to him, taking the pool cue out of his hand, taking it back to the rack and putting it away, then returning, even as she continued talking. Her words were casual, conversational, but there was a hint of breathlessness in her voice that told him they were more than theoretical. “Hormones and pheromones. Some peptides, a little oxytocin, vasopressin, and that’s the whole story. But what do they know? Really, sex is all about physics.”

From Solitudes and Silence

>The town was destroyed, timber protruding like splintered bone from the mangled corpses of homes and shops, chunks of hair and flesh on signs and rocks like demonic droppings, and here and there, puddles of blood congealing coldly into the color of aged wine. Wailing echoed off the exposed walls, arcing, amplified, from survivor to survivor, reaching deep into Waimbrill's bones as he walked through the city.

>There were still spirits of death in the room; the ‘ink’ would be clear otherwise. It was his own plasma that he had separated from blood cells with a centrifuge. Magic was most concentrated in the blood, taken from oxygen in the air; the very atmosphere of the realm. It was why certain magics only appeared in certain lands. In the case of his cræft blood turned grey and black, and plasma would pick up a silvery glow. Without death near it though, plasma would be clear, and so he used it as an invisible ink. The writings would be in plain sight only for the few who Death clung to.

“What? That he was still alive? That he wasn’t upset with you? That he forgives you? Well, Daniel you will not find absolution here! You lost all possibility of that when you left that letter on my doorstep and left town like a dog with its tail between its legs. My son is too weak to deal with you! I swear to God and the Lord Jesus himself that you will never see him again.”

"There was a street three stories down,
and opposite of him was another tall building. Steam rose up from
a sewer in the middle of the street. Something was behind the cloud
of vapor. Mark squinted and saw a little girl, probably eight or
nine, looking up at him and smiling. She can’t be looking at me,
thought Mark. I’m three stories up, it's dark outside, and the
window is boarded up.
The girl was too far down that Mark
couldn’t make out her facial features in the dark. The girl waved. A
crash sounded from behind and he spun around to see the man who
was on the ceiling, now on the floor."

Jupiter appeared in the middle of a military camp somewhere in Further Gaul in the middle of an evening thunderstorm, scaring the poor centurion so badly he tried to run the god through with his own sword. Jupiter laughed, waiting for the man to right himself and realize in whose presence he was sitting.

Gaius Titus Aeronius, Jupiter said in his lowest rumbling tones, I have chosen you to be the recipient of my might. Your heirs will encircle the globe, and all will have the ability to pull lightning from the very sky. You will be known as Lord Fulmen, and you will rule over the heirs of other gods. Do you accept?

"I believe in God but I never pray. Since God knows everything, he already knows what I want. He gives people what they want only if He sees fit to do so. It would be the absolute height of arrogance to assume that out of over six billion souls, He is concerned with me in particular."

"Gassel was a serious tub of shit. That seat he's in -- wherever it is -- must be factory sealed under the suffocating grasp of his ass cheeks and back tits. It seemed like thousands of years ago he had near literally planted himself in that hover chair and it ultimately coalesced to his flesh. The dude is an artifact; an historical fucking monument."

>Del caught a glimpse of Frankfurt, a few miles distant. The city looked white-hot; searchlights probed the sky ahead of them, and fires from below lit the immense clouds of smoke billowing out of the city, as though the bombs had burst the surface of the earth, and flames were spewing from its very core. Thousands of tons of bombs had cracked the land and opened a mighty chasm, and hell had broken loose.

>You’re a disease, Holden—you’re this … carrier … of hate that infects, and the weird part is it always manages to kill everyone except for you.”
>
>“And what are you?” Holden snipped. “The cure?”
>
>“Nope,” Doc said calmly. “I’m just a man, Holden. That’s something
you’ll never understand. You never get how disconnected you are from the rest of the world. How wrong you are about how the world works. Sure, I could shoot you down like the mad dog that you are. That might help in the short term … After what you did to my family, I’d even take some pleasure in it, and some people would say ‘thank you.’”
>
>Doc shook his head and continued; he had obviously been thinking
about what to say for a long time. “But your mad little disciples? They
wouldn’t get the point, would they? To them I’d be throwing gasoline on
the fire. They’d chase me for a while, but then they’d get frustrated and go after some folks that look just like me. I won’t have that on my conscience. Instead, I’m going to do something that you won’t be able to fight back against. Are you ready for this, Holden? I’m going to let your hate and your madness kill you and die with you.”
