Just make sure you got some extra PCIE slots and there is no real bad choice for MOBO.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01M3SCTW7/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I got this, but you can just get something like this instead https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00CBEVTIA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=APCVP767QCJNF&psc=1 Or both.

I am using external HDD's, I spent a lot of time looking into building a tower of just internal hard drives, in like a custom made NAS, but I found while the internal hard drives are a little cheaper it's not really worth it. What I like is if I ever want to dip out I can just sell the external drives on kijiji.

I am working on a build for my miner, currently using my gaming PC but I want something on the side with decent low energy use. What I am going with is the new "AMD - Ryzen 5 2400G" - this means you don't need a GPU since it's built into the CPU, I plan to use a mini ITX with that PCIE 5x 3.0 expansion instead of a graphics card. Now the one draw back of using an APU is it uses your ram for the cpu and gpu so I went with 16gb at a decent speed, FLareX is probably a better choice but I am trying to make this sucker all black inside.

This is just me, but if you plan to build with external and internal, I would recommend NZXT H440 it can fit like 11 3.5" HDD's

Nope. The single connector on that cable is a SFF-8087 SAS Connector (NOT a SATA connector which your motherboard will have!).

SAS (Serial Attached SCSI, server grade / enterprise) controllers are backwards-compatible with SATA (Serial ATA, "mainstream" / consumer) Drives, but SATA is not forwards-compatible with SAS. If you have a SAS Controller, yes you can hook up 4 drives to a single SAS port, but if you have SAS Drives (And for this purpose that cable can be thought of as turning your drives into SAS Drives even though technically it really isn't) you can't connect them to a SATA Controller.

SAS Controllers are server-grade gear, and come in at several hundreds of dollars for the "cheap" ones.

Get a cheap HBA (Host Bus Adapter) card to go in a PCIe port, like the ones everyone else is suggesting.

This one is 4 port and (allegedly) has hot swap support (no rebooting when plugging / unplugging drives) which your motherboard probably won't have (Some nice ones do though):

But I'm sure you could find cheaper.

Super helpful info! Does that mean that I can just use an old laptop if I'm not looking to invest in numerous hard disks? How many TB are minimum to make this worth setting up? I could pick up something like this... https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B01LQQH86A/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1511812971&sr=1-4&keywords=hard+drive ?

if you are going to add a lot of external drives then you need to add more USB 3.0 cards.
But there is a difference between the $30 4 port and the $100 4 port.
For example the one in the link below has 4 dedicated USB 3 controllers on the card, and it connects to PCI-e x4 so it can make use of a lot of bandwidth. The cheaper cards don't have the ability to support all that bandwidth, but they are useful in particular situations.

So you want 4 or 8 drives to 4 ports the $30 is ok.
If you want 16 with same speed as if you went right to the pc then the one below is want you want.

https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Allegro-Pro-PCIe-card/dp/B00XPUHO10/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522273173&sr=1-1&keywords=Sonnet+Allegro+Pro+USB+3.0+PCIe+card

Its up to you if you can put in 3 or 4 card into your pc then go for the lower cost cards. If you only have 1 or 2 areas to connect the card then go for the $100.

Yes it would work to make plotting faster on SMR type drives that are normally painfully slow like seagates. Keep in mind copying over the plot still takes considerable time, its not going to be a quick copy and paste job like everything else.

I use this to stage the plot https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JKMZ6L6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it writes incredibly fast with an SSD but a normal WD hdd will still be considerably quicker.

u/CodeMan4 · 1 pointr/burstcoin

Thanks for the info! I’ll start that setup right when I get out of work later today. I do only have 1 plot per drive. Those other plots were from computer space. Would you recommend me upgrading my processor?

The sweet spot for size/price is generally 8TB drives. This is a good example, $17.50 per terabyte. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB8000100/dp/B01HAPGEIE/

I'm using this hub BTW.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L49XDLO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yes, I understand there are better hubs available. I bought this thing a couple years ago for the ethernet NIC and had it laying around.

u/Spys0ldier · 1 pointr/burstcoin

Ah ok. For some reason I was thinking you had a modular psu but forgot a store bought pc prob wouldn’t. You can always get more sata power splitter. My psu is modular but I’ve already run out of power options and need to get a splitter like this StarTech.com 4x SATA Power Splitter Adapter Cable (PYO4SATA) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0086OGN9E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MmJLAbVG5R700.

u/MrPilotMan · 3 pointsr/burstcoin

Go for the 8TB drives, they're cheaper per TB and 10TB is about the min to see anything remotely meaningful every day. There is a mining calculator in the sidebar.

2 of these would do you well. Also, you'll want to set up a full node.

Samsung 960 PRO M.2-2280 512GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M21311Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5e8NAbYGYHDA8

In short it’s a ssd that is mounted directly to the motherboard allowing for faster read and write speeds etc. I linked it if you want to see what it looks like

u/Jsteitz · 1 pointr/burstcoin

Hmm strange, even if your drive needs 0.5 amps on the 5v it’s just 2.5W per drive... if you have a psu with 120w on the 5v rail and reserve 20w for the mobo (enough?), it will still be ok for 40disks... my seagates are at 0.3 amps on the 5v, so fine for 60disks. If really running into issues, a second 5v rail is needed, something like this could do the trick:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06X1DPFQQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526846293&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=12v+5v+30a+step&psc=1

Could this be used inside a case (cooling etc)?

u/ElectronicCarrot · 3 pointsr/burstcoin

I have two of these and they seem to work just fine. I haven’t had any issues with them.

Anker 10-Port USB Data Hub with 60W Power Adapter

u/BraindeadOne · 2 pointsr/burstcoin

The maximum bandwidth after overhead for usb 3.0 is around 500 Mbyte/second. With 28 drives thats a maximum of 14Mbyte/second per drive.
If you want to get totally serious (and want to invest), you could get one of these: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/open-source-data-storage-server/

Otherwise use smaller hubs and pcie-cards for more usb3-ports, or get some of those: https://www.amazon.com/SAS9211-8I-8PORT-Int-Sata-Pcie/dp/B002RL8I7M

u/iamadamv · 2 pointsr/burstcoin

This one

They're all sold out now.
